Network! Happy holidays, or if you don't celebrate 'em, I hope your winter's going well. A few things.

First, how many of us are living in the Germany-Austria area? Or visiting very regularly? Are here for more than a day in a given week, like.

Second, the mayor of Fussen talked to me about rumors of ghosts in that one castle you can see not far from the teleporting site, Neuschwanstein. She wants some Numbered to look into it, and good news is she's willing to pay. I don't know if these are the same as the Locke ghosts or more dangerous, but we really should check it out.

Finally, if you don't mind: what is the most pointless, silly pulse you've ever had? I thought bonfire cult rites was mine, but then it turned into how my feathers smell when they're burning.

Who: Everyone joining the mafia attack
What: Attack on the mafia meeting
When: Monday night, December 8th
Where: mafia building

An hour before the meeting, everyone who wants to make a stand against the mafia - violent and potentially ill advised though it might be - gathers in a nearby location to make final plans. Nick’s original idea of Xander moving a small number of people through shadows into the meeting to take out Albero is still technically in effect, but only for those who are planning on gunning straight for the mafia boss himself. Or those who want to help take him out specifically, even if not to deliver the final blow themselves.

Thorir’s provided weapons from his shop, for any network members who know how to use them. L’d agreed to handle the coordination of getting everyone in the building to take out as many of the mafia members as they could, and to hopefully confine the chaos inside.

Because once they’re in and fighting, it’s… probably going to be at least a little chaos.

But hopefully, by the end of the night, it’ll at least be done.

[OOC: Linking one more time to the plotting post in case anyone needs it as the log goes on! I’ll post up a thread for those gunning for Albero so the mods can NPC him as needed, otherwise feel free to start your own threads to battle mafia goons!]

Looks like I picked a pretty bad time to figure out I'm a Numbered one of you, with everything that's been going on lately. Makes me even more grateful my family got out of Dodge a few months ago. Never thought I'd be grateful that they're in freaking Red Sox country (with the inferior team), but here we are.

I guess the burning question on my mind is, what actually happens if we leave town? Every time I head back to school, my ring transforms. Normally, it looks like a silver band, but whenever I come home...

[He's attached a picture of his ring - it's a large, lapis lazuli ring with a silver family crest in the center. It might look a little familiar to characters that've seen Stefan around before (because that ring is massive), but otherwise, it's just an "old family heirloom."]

I figure, it has to be related to all of this somehow. Also, with concerns to leaving town, other stuff on here mentioned possible amnesia? I don't remember a lot, but if I'm going to forget all of this now, it might be better than later - especially since I've got class Tuesday.

This is Nick. I don't know how many of you are still on here that know me, but I'm going to cut right to the chase here: I've been working undercover with the mafia for months, trying to get their secrets for the network. And now I finally have something useful.

There's going to be a meeting soon. Albero will be there, along with a large number of high ranking mafia members. I know when, and where, and I know that if we hit it, we stand a good chance of taking them out and making a serious dent in their operation.

I know some of you are going to say that violence isn't the answer. For anyone who wants to try another road, I have a number of recordings of the mafia making plans to frame network members, and of some of the kidnappings that have happened, as well as the location of where the mafia members are getting their modifications. I'll pass them off to someone who wants them, but not until just before the meeting. It's obviously going to blow my cover pretty badly.

I'm going to that meeting. I don't want to do it alone, because I want to make this hurt, and I can't do that by myself. I know I'm not the only one who's been affected by what they've done, and if we want to stop them, to make it so they can't do it to anyone else - this is the best chance we've got.

We need to take it.

[The man appearing onscreen this morning is haggard, somber, and distracted. Clearly, he's been awake all night, something he's been doing far too often lately, sitting curled in the middle of what appears to be a cleaned up but ancient school gymnasium's basketball court with his chin on his knees. A few feet away is a blue tarp hiding something sizable and lumpy.]

I know Albero's people are striking Espresso Yourself, early on the morning of Sunday, November 23, at 3:15 AM. They will be there to raze the building to the ground and they do not intend to take prisoners.

[He bites his lip, glancing away from the camera. The calmness he's affected since Anthony's death slips for a second, revealing something like fear. He swallows.]

I've been waiting for a pulse. I was hoping that maybe my other's experience and knowledge could help me, in this regard, but up to this point... it's been all quiet on that front.

[He rises slowly, moving towards the tarp and drawing it away from what it conceals. There are many pounds of dynamite stacked in the middle of his gym, along with several ominous looking canisters.]

I have dynamite and nitroglycerin. I think...

[He takes a deep, shuddering breath.]

I know we can kill a lot of them. Part of me really wants to, and I can't be the only one. But I know... I know that's not what we're fighting for, a criminal record of our own and another reason to be driven out of this city. So...

[He sits again, hard, on the floor, eyes and posture conveying a distinctly dazed quality.]

I think maybe it would be better to use this information to get the FBI on this and catch them in the act, with no blood shed. I'm prepared for both of these scenarios, but honestly... I don't know what's right. I'm so tired. I trust all of you, so... please help me make the right decision.

EDIT: I've been informed that Nick knows about another upcoming opportunity, a chance to hit the Mafia where it hurts. There's to be a meeting of higher-ups in the near future; further details are forthcoming.

Who: Lyall and anybody interested in capturing the not-werewolf impersonating him
When: Backdated to November 15, evening
Where: The streets around Locke High School
What: Going hunting and then hopefully catching

After getting together the interested parties via the network, upon his release from that idiotic "for his safety" jail time, Lyall is ready to get rid of this monster once and for all. There have been more sightings since his release, and he's sure it won't take long before another attack-- and then another arrest. And he'd really rather not spend any more time behind bars just yet.

So they're at the high school Saturday night, meeting up after dark, Lyall pacing around the parking lot and sniffing about for which direction to start in from there. Sacrificing any ability to fight whatsoever for the ability to communicate and have actual hands, he's not going wolf tonight. Hopefully, anyway, considering it's not a quick change just yet. He's brought the leftover rope and twine from the ages-ago trip into the mines, in the hopes of using it to catch the bastard rather than letting him get away, or actually hurting him, stuffed into an old backpack. Otherwise, he looks business as usual, up to and including a scarf. At least now it's cold enough outside to warrant one.
professorwolf: (uncertain)

[Usually when Lyall's number shows up on the network, it's either an audio post, or from his laptop-- neatly typed in Arial in a Word document. This afternoon, though, it's paired with his small, neat handwriting on lined paper, appearing slowly as he's making an effort to keep it tidy and not shaky. Apparently his circumstances have changed a bit.]

In case anyone needs me, check at the police station. I've been brought into holding "for my own safety" after Anthony's well-publicized death, but it's a fairly thinly veiled excuse to get me off the streets because they think I'm behind the vandalism and attack at the school. Besides, "my own safety" could be seen to somewhere other than a cell.

I'm just glad they left me a pen and a notebook.

Once I'm out again, I'm afraid I may have to put aside my usual penchant for pacifism and suggest we do something about the imposter wolf. One of the students was actually bitten last night! I'm sure I could sniff him out, if someone would be willing to come actually help me deal with him.

[He's pretty sure he won't lack for volunteers. Now he just has to worry about getting out, and not getting out too soon, since he has a plan for tomorrow night, at least....]

Lyall, I hope you'll read this before you reach our meeting place. I believe I may be delayed for some time.

To the rest of you- if we've already met, I do apologize for these months of forgetfulness but I consider this headache my due punishment. If we haven't - my name is Elian, and I will be pleased to meet you once I am done convincing this poor man I'm as much a victim in this little debacle as he.

Who: A wolf-like monster that is definitely not Lyall and OPEN
When: From October 29 through October 31
Where: The streets around Locke High School
What: Someone is stalking the students and teachers. Or perhaps something?

It starts overnight at the high school, discovered first thing in the morning on the 29th: deep scratch marks on doors, a couple of cracked windows, and one scared silly janitor who swears he saw a monster prowling around the grounds. After school, as the students leave for the day, a number of the later stragglers freak out and try to find teachers to alert to that monster, as well. One hysterically claims it was chasing her between the buildings, another swears it was trying to get into his locker, and a third just says she saw eyes from under the bushes. All of them, however, are adamant that it looks furry and has a tail.

For the next two days, the sightings continue. Teachers are stalked through the parking lot, students are chased from the campus, but so far, no one has been hurt. So far. From the pieces of various stories, the picture comes together of an angry bipedal wolf, or something sort of like it. Anyone near the school might encounter it, student or not, but it's definitely focused on the campus and those associated with it.

Obviously, the media are going to have a field day with this, and the Numbered... not so much.

Who: Lyall and Nick
When: Backdated to October 22, night
Where: Nick's apartment
What: Concern and possibly difference of opinion

When news about Anthony broke, the first thing Lyall did was call Nick. To his concern, the man didn't pick up. But he let him have some space, since he knew how important Anthony had been to him. He tried calling again two days later, figuring that was enough time to let the man grieve on his own and be ready to talk. Still nothing.

Now, two nights before the funeral is supposed to happen, he isn't going to let Nick hole himself up alone-- or whatever he's doing-- any longer. He shows up on Nick's doorstep after dark, checking by scent for whether he's actually home. If he isn't, he sits in front of the door to wait. If he is, he knocks. And, in fact, pounds, if Nick doesn't open up after the first couple knocks. If it gets to that point, though, there might wind up being a hole in the door, given Lyall's still working on controlling his newfound strength....

Either way, he's not going away.

Who: Randall/Randolph Lyall and Robyn Lyre

Where: The park in Locke
What: A wolf runs into a very large dog (and his keeper)

With his sleep schedule somewhat uncomfortably flip-flopped, and without an actual job to get him out of the house, Lyall is often a bit restless. Given the press are often watching his house, however, getting out in human form is troublesome. He does it, of course, but some nights, he just wants peace and privacy. It didn't take much work to rig a loose board in the backyard fence, that he could nose aside as a wolf, and it's become one of his favorite things in the past few weeks.

Tonight he's out-- with a collar on, just in case anyone gets any ideas-- and mostly keeping to the park, chasing thrown sticks, raccoons, and cats and basically acting like a large, shaggy, and yet rather well-behaved dog might. It's not terribly dignified, but he's to the point where he doesn't care: he's out, he's moving, and he's free for a couple hours, at least.

The smell of a friend catches him before he sees her, and he perks up with curiosity and concern, and pads in that direction. If Robyn is out and about after dark, he wants to check in with her. Never can be too careful.

[Notably, it's the first time L's put his face on the Network. It's composed and deliberate; he looks into the camera with a cold gaze that never falters or glances aside even for a moment as he speaks. His voice is similarly frigid, tone flat and emotionless.]

I'm sure many of you know this already, but Anthony Janvier was gunned down on Friday. He was at work, and it was a barbaric act of mob violence scarcely befitting such a gentle soul. He was brave and kind to his last moment, and I don't think I only speak for myself when I say I have lost a friend.

[He hasn't blinked yet; that stare could burn holes in liars and killers. It's a dare, a challenge to acknowledge futility and look away first.]

I'm not sentimental, or Catholic. Anthony was both. His funeral is tomorrow morning, because that's what people do: we mourn, we remember, and we mend. I understand that there are some who intend to picket the funeral; if you're afraid, don't bother coming, but if you're not... it's Friday, 10 AM at the Sacred Heart Cathedral.

[The video feed opens up on the infamous Lord of the Bugmen. He would look tired if his bugman self was prone to showing that sort of thing. People are getting attacked--hell, killed--over being Numbered, and it's wearing on him.]

With the way things have been now, it's become harder out there for anyone who isn't obviously human. Anyone who's easy enough to spot in a crowd, anyone who's easy enough to identify as one of us, becomes an easier target for them to choose.

[He clenches one of his hands into a fist. This is not an easy post for him to make, but he thinks it needs to be done.]

I'm not saying everyone else is safe. None of us really is now. There's more to it than that. Some of us don't exactly think like a human anymore. Not entirely. And it's not...exactly easy to deal with. Or to explain to people who haven't had part of their brain rewired. And that can be a liability. Make things worse.

[There is a bit of awkward bug shuffling around, shifting his weight, and fidgeting. Saying that in a public capacity--such as public is on the network--may not be the best idea, and he's aware of that.]

It's easier to deal with if you've got someone else to talk to. Someone else who gets what being a monster can mean. Someone else who's been through all the weird physical changes.

[He is suggesting a support group, but he is very bad at just going out and saying so.]

So I was thinking it might be a good idea for those of us who have gone through the freakier changes, who might have weird instincts, or think they'll be turning into something else soon to get together somehow. Preferably somewhere quiet where no one's likely to come across us. Because if Energy Up or someone like that shows, I'm smashing their recording equipment.

What: First full moon since the strength change....

By now, with all the intentional changes he'd gone through, Lyall had at least learned to stop screaming when the full moon change hit him. He had some pride. But for the full moon changes, he no longer had any control over the noises he made by about halfway through the change, the human part of his mind gone. It made it easy for the people on the other side of the door to tell when he was done changing, at least, since the howling and crying turned into panting and slow recovering whines, as the last of his bones finally finished healing up.

Hajime and Nick had half an hour of peace before the wolf was healed up enough to register their scent, and the growls started. They had an hour after that before his full strength returned, and he started attacking the door: claws first, which had the effect of rattling the door violently and making a horrible scratching sound, louder than previous months' attempts. Then, when that didn't get the barrier out of the way, a sickening, deafening thud that shook the whole wall.

The door frame started to crack on the second hit.

She had needed some time to recover and sort herself out after the ordeal she had been through, she wasn't anywhere near one hundred percent but she was at least ready to make an attempt to show up in front of her friends again.

She was incredibly nervous about doing this, she knew there were a fair number of people that thought it would be best to wait for the mafia to release her... But that wasn't exactly how things had worked out. She knew there had been a lot of arguing over the situation. She had only seen a little of it during the short time she had access to the network, but it was enough to make her nervous of how people might be reacting to the fact that her rescuers had probably made the mafia really angry. She certainly couldn't bring herself to be mad at them, they had saved her plain and simple.]

[There's this girl again, with her far too young, but steady voice.]

Robyn is my friend. When the message first started, I wanted to run to save her.

Until Albero made the promise.

I'm not saying fear him. I'm not saying we take his deal to leave town. All I care about is Robyn right now, the rest will come later.

The one who has the best chance of getting Robyn out of there unscathed is Cure Phantom and anyone with his power set. However, it's also known that the mob knows the powers that would do it and if they have even an inkling of belief he will be sneaky, they likely have a back up plan for it.

But this is the thing: Albero is a business man. He's not just some psychopath off the street, he runs an organization, an effective organization. That requires intelligence and the ability to manipulate.

Robyn is meant to manipulate us, but it's to manipulate us to his advantage. If we rush in and get her killed, that is a hit to our morale. A 'look, you tried OH so hard, and what do you get? A dead girl.' I know that won't break some, but it will break others, and that means the numbers who would go against him are down.

If no one rushes in, Robyn will not be hurt. If he hurts Robyn once we listen to him, then he's the only one at fault. Anyone who cares about Robyn, to anyone who cares about innocents, to anyone who just hates people doing what he does, will be against him, and with a personal vendetta. He loses if he breaks his promise. All he has to gain in killing Robyn is one dead Numbered who doesn't even have the truly terrifying powers.

If Robyn is let go, then there is a chance people will believe him. People will leave without thinking this is some trap to weed us out, that they'll be safe if they're gone. He wants this because if even some take this deal, that still means numbers are down, and he's winning. There is also the possibility he could find out unknown Numbered because they'll sure to tend to her, so be careful when you do go visit Robyn.

In the game of manipulation, you need the other side to be confident to trust you to act a certain way. Which means keeping your word until you can pull off a decisive win. He can't right now, so he is telling the truth.

The best chance Robyn has to get out relatively okay is to wait. Not because of fear, but because it's what's best for HER, and because it puts us in the best position to deal with him AFTER she's safe.

I FOUND it! I FOUND THE OUTRAGEOUS SEA CREATURE THEY WERE TALKING ABOUT!

[Really, he's looking way more excited than any man should look while underwater next to a giant crustacean. He's close enough to touch it now, and he turns the camera back to face both him and the lobster-thing behind him, like he's takling a selfie, giving himself a chance to smile and wave. AHOY THERE! YOU MUST BE THE OUTRAGEOUS SEA CREATURE I'VE HEARD SO MUCH ABOUT! I'M AQUAMAN, BUT MY FRIENDS CALL ME ARTHUR! YOU CAN CALL ME ARTHUR!

[The creature actually stirs slightly at that yelling, though it does not wake. The camera feed shakes from the movement, as though the creature stirring is making the water a little choppy for Arthur. He looked at it and it just-- I don’t know what he did, but the pigeon freaked out. It couldn’t move but you could tell it’s suffering. Then he let go and it just died. Keeled over. Badri said it’s because, and I quote, “the severe mental trauma”. He also said that usually it only happens to more intelligent creatures. [Another pause, and he gives the camera a meaningful look.] More intelligent. He can literally scare people to death with his mind.

And It’s not just him having creepy powers. You should’ve seen the way he acted-- he kept smiling like it’s a game. When the pigeon died he was all like [Emil does a rather convincing impression of Badri’s voice] “Oops! Didn’t mean to kill it, must be the severe mental trauma, tee-hee-hee!”

I know they’ve been okay so far, but it was fucked up. What kind of person tortures an animal just to demonstrate something and smiles while he’s doing it?

Who: Randolph Lyall, a couple reporters for the local news station, and anyone who replied with interest here.
When: August 19, on the evening news
Where: On the television! More specifically, in a studio somewhere in Locke.
What: Some hopefully-positive publicity for the Numbered

The special segment on the news at 7 sets the scene in one of its side news offices meant for local coverage. There are some pretty strange people seated around a long desk-like table... and some not very strange people, too. Some of them look like anyone you'd see walking down the street, and some of them look like something you'd see out of a comic book or a movie.

The reporter introduces them all as members of that mysterious group of the "specially gifted" who helped the city against the giant snake several months before and who have had very little to say in the meantime, and it starts off on a generally positive note, with each of the reincarnates involved introducing themselves and giving a short statement about their experiences. It then turns to questions, mostly from the reporters, but with a segment at the end for questions tweeted in by viewers. One of the three reporters seems positive on the whole-- and familiar with Julien in particular-- while another is fairly neutral and a third seems to want to steer things into more negative territory.

The segment only lasts an hour, so it's not really long enough for much in-depth questioning, but the anchor at the end says that further interest might bring their illusive guests back again in the future!

((mostly closed to people who expressed interest (or would express interest) on Lyall's request for volunteers earlier, but if anyone wants to submit viewer questions, there's a comment for that at the end! :3 ))

Randall again. I know there are probably many rather more pressing problems, right now-- such as the machine I hear we've commandeered, Thunder Corp's potential retaliation, the mob, that cult... but there's also apparently been a lot of talk on television and online about how horrible we are and how we're secretly trying to run the country.

[And Lyall can't do a bloody thing about Thunder Corp or the mob or a cult, especially while getting prepped for school to start soon... but he's hoping maybe he can help a little with this.]

I know someone was talking about attempting to make corrections when things got out wrong, like that, but I was thinking that perhaps having more of us to consult might make that easier. As in, I was considering asking for volunteers to go public together. Including myself, of course-- I simply don't think trying to do it alone would be wise. I'd rather not present the idea that I'm an attention-monger, or something.

[Or make himself a sole target.]

There's certainly the question of just how forthcoming to be-- I tend to favor more, rather than less, or people will undoubtedly learn there's more to know, and assume we are hiding even worse. But that would be up to each individual. Either way, I thought I'd pose the question, if anyone here is particularly interested in going public, and trying to equally publically correct some of those rumors. I certainly don't have any power to take over the country with.

[That last comes out dry, because he's hard-pressed to think of anything that "being a werewolf" would do for him, in politics. ... nevermind that he's fairly sure being one automatically gave you rank in whatever England his other fellow comes from. That's not here.]

We've spent a long time in hiding, so I'll understand if I don't have many takers, but I am hoping for a few....

[A certain familiar British voice is back on the network, everybody.]

Well, I'm back. I don't think I remembered to let anyone outside my immediate circle know I would be gone... I apologize for that. But summer school and training are both out of the way, and I'm free for a whole week before classes begin again.

For anyone new here, I'm-- Randall Lyall.

[There's a brief hesitation there, as he consciously makes himself not say "Randolph".]

Biology teacher at Locke High. Also happen to be a werewolf.

So did I miss anything terribly important? It doesn't look like anything's blown up, in my absence, anyhow.

[Anthony's barely in the frame when the feed comes on. His voice is low and restrained, as are his syllables. (Restrained, anyhoo, clipped.)

Starts by apologetically rattling in a breath.]

It's -- been more than a - month; I thought I would mention - ...

[Partly for himself, admittedly. He's not the only one who has and would have missed at least one of these people.

Briefly brings his voice up vibrating in a little more focus:]
Excuse me - I'm sorry, don't. Mind the noise.

[There is no noise. Alas, he continues.]

Alex -- ...Varista and Ms. Bainbridge from the library aren't. -- On the network. Anymore. Their -- numbers still won't work.

There aren't -- really any... Many of us who - were always around, either. Anymore. Uhmm -- are there...

And it's -- been more than a year. Since I. Erhmm. [Half a throat-clearing.] -- Left home.

[The sounds go increasingly padded - he isn't going to go feeling back for those ends to tie them together. He simply wound up slipping on the most immediate bit of stupidly wistful sentimentality and letting himself amble over the others.]

[When Karl's face pops up, something looks distinctly different. Could it be new clothes? Nah. Could it be a new hair cut? Nope. Could it be the gigantic black eye he's now sporting and that's impossible to miss? Yup. Given the size and the intensity and the puffiness, whoever got him in the left eye got him good and recently so. Anyone in or around the police station at 5 pm yesterday would have seen a random man march up to Karl as he was leaving and just slug him as hard as possible. Karl, oddly enough, didn't do anything to him.]

Should any of you still wish to test magic and its effects on plastics or other materials, I've recently gained a new form of it which can be used for the experimentation.

[Time for a quick demonstration (once again, inside his own apartment because true scientists don't dwell on details like property damage when testing things)! Karl rolls the chair out of view so to give everyone a nice view of a rubber boot by a door frame. Nothing happens for a few seconds. Then suddenly, a bolt of lightning (complete with thunder sound effects) strikes it. Out of nowhere. Inside an apartment. Yup.

Once magical lightning show is over, Karl rolls back into view. He almost opts ending the message here, but instead, very clearly hesitates before speaking up once more.]

There's also a question I've been meaning to ask. Does anyone here remember being older than what is possible for humans? If so, do you recall how it was possible or the details of why the aging process had been abnormal? Was magic or odd technology inv--

[Asking about the details behind potential agelessness gets cut off by the sudden vibration of his phone. A quick glance down at it happens before Karl sighs and answers with a 'Ja, Mutti?'. A nice little exchange made up mainly of ja-ing and mutti-ing follows, with a final 'yes, I promise, this weekend' in German before finally closing his phone. Seconds after the conversation ends, the phone vibrates again. Thankfully, it's only a text. It still succeeds in getting another sigh.]

As one final note, I will be traveling outside Locke City to Boston on the 29th and will remain there until the 5th. Pulses may no longer fully vanish outside the city, but still be cautious in contacting me during this time.

[And just ending here. People should get the jist of the aging thing even if it got cut off, right? Right.]

So the "lights" -- which aren't just lights, by the way; they're people if you stay around them long enough -- that some of us have seen in the blackouts. Anybody else been seeing them pretty much everywhere, whether there's a blackout or not?

[He's got a decent idea of what they might be. But seeing whether everyone else notices them wherever they are could confirm it for him.]

Who: Randall/Randolph Lyall and Nick Burkhardt
When: June 8, evening
Where: Lyall's house
What: There's a small problem with some timing...

Lyall sits on the sturdy little futon he'd gotten to replace his mangled couch, his laptop on the cushion next to him but not watched, waiting for Nick to get there. The phone conversation had been brief-- all he'd had to say was that Geoff had invited him, and presumably others he'd spoken with, to the spaceship to talk about the car-- and of course Nick had wanted to come over and talk about it in person.

Lyall, of course, is fine with that.

The door's unlocked when Nick shows up, and he gets a, "Come on in!" when he's at the door, before he even had a chance to knock. Lyall's listening for him, after all.
