Hey, network.

[It's a Kotetsu! Video this time, though his face is a little off-center. He's still getting used to this whole doing stuff with his left hand thing. He's also dressed in the top half of his Wild Tiger costume, which some people may recognize from either the Wise Snake fiasco or the trial that's been going on, if they've been following it--as "Wild Tiger" has been one of the witnesses that testified against the corrupt police.]

So you're probably gonna hear about this soon enough anyway, buuut I figured I'd take the liberty of telling you guys first: the verdict just came down. Sherman, Edwards, and the rest of 'em were all found guilty. They're going away for a long time.

It's probably a little early to be thinking like it's all over and we won, but I gotta admit, it feels a lot like that these days. We survived Wise Snake, the aliens here don't seem to want to kill us, the corrupt parts of the force are answering for their crimes...

Heh. I'm gonna look like such a sap here, but I'd like to hold a get-together at my place later today. To celebrate making it this far together...and remember the people we lost along the way. This evening, 'round five maybe? There'll be food and drinks, but you can bring your own too if you want.

Here's my address, [insert address in text here] I trust none of you'll go TPing my house on Halloween, eh? Hope to see some of you soon.

[It had been a few weeks since her last encounter with the snake attack in downtown but she never could have thought that everything would end up like this. Nevertheless, now that she was on the network?

Looks like she didn't have a choice. With a heavy sigh, she finally responded.]

So I got a quick question. Is there anyone here who doesn't want to be a part of this?

No offense but this isn't the type of thing I would go for. If you want to, then go ahead but I'm not suited for this. Between that snake attack and those aliens, there's got to be something else for those who can't handle it. Yeah, yeah, I can go help at the hospital but who wants to deal with seeing that everyday? That's a lot for an adult or even a kid to handle don't you think? What can a 10 year old do here?

[And not die in the process? However, there was some tapping noises coming from her other end.]

Whatever, I just want someone to get the numbers out of my head! I don't need another snake attack destroying the city or killing me!

[But she did have to admit, she was a little curious about whoever that person was that saved her.]

[Video flickers online of a young woman with long dark hair and a stern expression. Beyond that, it's fairly unreadable.]

I suppose I should say this is not what I anticipated. The "heroes" who saved Locke City from certain doom had been scurrying and hiding in the shadows for nearly a year prior. [Pause, a slight lift of her considerable eyebrows.] Not without reason, perhaps, yet... not what one anticipates.

My question is, are you satisfied with what path now lies before you, and what it took to get there? [Her tone grows quicker, and far sharper.] What do you think that path is?

After that snake, this city was beset by creatures once more, yet beings from another world cleaned up the mess. Altruistic thought their intentions may be, and I will give credit for cleaning up their own disaster, or what was left of it... I for one am not satisfied to simply let myself just be protected. To simply be reactive to the problems we are sure to face.

[Her eyes narrow.] I imagine the same must apply to more of you out there. To push forward, become stronger, and seize the power that's been put within our grasp. Because there will be other threats. Out in the open, Numbered will not remain so good natured forever. People will use us. Monsters and aliens are real, and even if these visitors mean us no harm, who knows what else may be out there now?

So, I am curious.

[Her head tilts back, voice raising a little.] Who has the pride in their ability and self worth to truly steel themselves, to really be prepared for what else may come down this road we've been forced upon?

[She lowers her head, expression never wavering throughout.] I would simply like to know those whom I am dealing with.

[Robyn should probably be paying attention in class, but she really can't be bothered with math or anything math related. She's just jotting things down in her notebook to make it look like she's learning something.]

To do list:

1. Find out out what [Insert her number here.] is all about. - Did I have ICQ at some point? I don't remember making an account for it. Are ICQ numbers that long? What the heck would I have used for a password when I made it?

2. Do homework. ...Bleh... D:

2.5. Find something better to do than homework. ...Good idea!

3. Convince dad to buy me a guitar. (If I ask him every day, he'll crack and do it. I know he will)

4. Pick up sunglasses so I don't have to explain the whole eyes changing color thing to dad. No, too obvious. Maybe there's a place in town that sells colored contacts?

5. Ice Cream? This should really be higher up on the list, me. You know better.

6. AUTOGRAPHS! NEED TO GET ALL OF THEM!!!! - TOP PRIORITY This is now number one on the list.
...Maybe number 2, I could really go for some ice cream right about now.

7. Mmmmm.. Cookie Dough... :)

8. Does anyone even use ICQ anymore!?

[The note ends with a doodle of an ice cream cone. It actually looks pretty good.]

[The feed turns on to a certain blond, standing somewhat close to the camera. She adjusts her webcam slightly before stepping back. She's dressed strangely, in what appears to be partial armor. And from the look on her face, she isn't quite sure what to make of it.]

So, I found this in my bag. I know I didn't pack it, because I don't remember having anything like this before I left. It's pretty light-weight considering [She moves around a bit to demonstrate] but I have no idea where it came from. I definitely wasn't expecting to find a breast place in my bag!

[But did the fabric underneath have to be so... tight-fitting? She felt awkward showing off her stomach and legs in something like that...]

I found something else too.

[She walks back up to the camera, reaching for something behind it, and pulling it out. A small, solid gold chalice, with simple etchings around the body of it.]

It's weird. I'm not sure what other me would have used this for, but I get this strange feeling whenever I hold it. I can't really explain. Has anyone seen anything like this? It looks like a goblet, but I can't for the life of me figure out why I would need something like this...

[She sighs.]

Anyway, I'm starting school tomorrow, and I'm a little nervous. I've never been to a public school before. What should I expect? I know there are a few people from LCHS, so some advice would be great. What teachers are good? Should I completely avoid cafeteria food? What are the need-to-know things I should, well, need to know?

So. This doesn't look like this number is from some Dewey number from the library like I thought it might be? It looks like I got way over my head with this number thing. I thought if I wrote it down and figured it out, I'd get it out of my head. I guess not though......

[There's something of a sigh there. No, that would be too much to hope for that things might actually work out.]

This whole thing is really not reassuring me that I'm not crazy or something. The whole...snake mess and everything. All that pink, and that tree that just. Bloomed or was like, healed? Trees don't just...bloom that quickly. No way is that possible.

[No. It isn't. Which is why Stella is still so thoroughly confused by the image and trying and failing to just forget about it.]

Although. Now I'm curious. Superheroes. I mean, I always thought they were just in comics or movies, you know? I wonder if supers also read comics as well....? Maybe to get ideas for their costumes or something? Maybe I should. If I get some weird powers, I mean. I haven't yet, but. This whole numbers thing means I might, right? I'm not sure how to feel about that. I mean, if I can use the powers to help people....that's a good thing, isn't it? I don't know. I should probably just. Go to bed. Forget this whole mess. I don't have time for this with my studies.

[ Eriks doesn't know why he puts the number into his phone. It's been a constant presence at the back of his head for a good week now, sure, but he's made an art out of ignoring it. No, more accurately, he doesn't notice he's put the number into his phone until his thumb has already done it: having already scrolled through everything that needs reading in the morning (work emails, the news, Tumblr of course—), he's left with nothing to do but fidget. And fidget he does, right into a goldmine of information that his bosses would skin a man for.

He forgets all about the eggs cooking on the stove and deposits himself in a kitchen chair, skim reading like no one has ever skim read before. Watches a few videos, follows a few links, listens to a few audio posts, and gleans too much and too little all at once. He can already tell his nights will be occupied with plenty of reading material for many weeks to come. Sleep? Not anymore, bud.

Still... reading is one thing. Watching is another. But conversation is absolutely indispensable, and he needs to talk with these people. But he needs to approach it carefully. Delicately. And, from the looks of things, not mention that whole 'with the Feds' thing.

With this in mind, he flips his phone camera to video, puts on his best charming smile, and initiates First Contact with exactly as much seriousness as he should. ]

[The text is in pink glitter. The writing is clearly a younger girl's. The "i"s are dotted with little bubbles.]

Hail and well met, everyone! I was wondering if it would be possible for me to get the answers to a few questions! I have heard many rumors from school, but I do not want to believe them until I hear the true story! To do otherwise would be rude!
-Is it true that the giant robots which were used in the battle last month must eat cars for energy? Is it true that the cars are actually sentient and it is a case of robotic cannibalism? (That seems so cruel 8C!)

-Are those with super powers actually aliens themselves fighting an intergalactic war after the destruction of their home planet and you've actually come here to protect our planet from invaders, asking nothing in return? (If that is the case then I am sure you will find that this world will welcome you if you'd like to settle down!)

-Are you actually the product of radiation experiments in after school detentions? (I have never been to after school detention is it really so bad?)

-Can you get powers or strange memories by being bitten by someone who has powers? (I do not remember being bitten by anyone!)

-I've heard that there are people who became angels! Is this true?

-And animals who can talk!

-Is everyone who has found that they can access this network actually a clone of their original selves replaced by the government in order to combat the looming alien threat?? (I do not personally believe that one, but I would like to get confirmation.)
As you can see there are many different origin stories and I just want to make sure I get it right, so as not to offend anyone. Thank you for your time, everyone. ♥

I guess we're not so secret anymore? I don't even know. I'm trying to keep my status as a member of this thing secret since I still work for the city and all. Not like it's been easy with all these FBI agents swarming around. I'm lucky nobody's tried running me through one of those full-body scans, huh? That'd be a huge red light.

Speaking of huge lights, if you're new to the numbers club, hi! My name's Brooke. I'm a mortician. Most of my work is on the up-and-up, but if past you was undead or anything like that, I can definitely try to help. Things keep going this way and it might be all I do. In addition! Newer Network members might not know about how before we had the moving snake statues we had immobile ones that had a kind of influence on the non-networked. I'm okay-- [She holds her hands up for emphasis; her right arm appears to be bandaged.] I made it out a lot better than I could have. I managed to deflect it, for the most part.

But that's not why I'm posting. I had a dream that night, and the more I think about it, the more I think it might have been an echo. I can't remember a lot of details about it, but I remember a name: "The Field of Justice." I think I remember seeing others, but no real details about them.

I know, it sounds really hokey, and that's why I didn't want to say anything about it at first. It could have just been the pain medication I'm on, but you never know, right? [Julien's voice is a little heavy.] So, heads up, the Reverend Emmanuel Hall has gone off-Network. Forgotten everything. I think it happened a couple days ago, I saw him on Christmas and he seemed - as usual. I know we've had people using the church for meetings and stuff. I talked to him and it sounds like that could still be done, just that needs an excuse, maybe someone watching to make sure he doesn't walk in on anything he shouldn't see. I don't think he would, but hey, caution.

Also I know he'd go on grocery runs for people and was maintaining the latest version of our FAQ. We should figure that out too - I could help with groceries, but my schedule's a little tight and I'm not sure how long I'll be able to do that kind of thing.

Emmanuel'd gone and set this thing up so if this happened he'd mail people letters about what to do about him, that kind of thing. It's a good idea - if someone here depends on you, consider it, okay?

[ This particular post on the network consists of a large couplet of paragraphs written entirely in French, though peppered with some familiar phrases, such as 'Locke' and a few other notable establishments in the more wealthy area of the city.

For those able to read it, it's incredibly, incredibly purple and over-descriptive, almost laughably so. It seems to be some sort of personal blog or journal, based on the first-person chronicle of someone's weekend and a day at school. The speaker also has an over-inflated ego, based on the amount of times she reiterates how talented she is.

To anyone familiar with Roselle Delacroix, eighth grade student of Locke City Middleschool, it should be pretty obvious it's her.

At the end, there are a few sentences in English in a different tone, as though the person intended to write a completely different entry. An e-mail, most likely. ]

Sorry ahead of time, this might be a little whiny.

I want to apologize for fumbling with the secret Santa thing this year. I really did want to do something special for everyone on the network, but things have been really hectic this entire month, with the Starlit performances and family coming from out of town. I probably would have forgotten that it's my birthday tomorrow if my brother hadn't called me to wish me a happy sixteenth birthday.

He's doing well, but like the rest of my family, he's wondering why we even stay in Locke City in the first place, with everything going on. My father works out of town, and my mom could just as easily commute. I'm almost worried that they're considering it. Maybe I'm just reading too much into things, family Christmas always wears me out.

[She didn't sound convinced.]

Anyway, I hope that everyone had a good holiday, and a happy new year in a few days.

Should you have provided it, you'll receive a rather nice hat and scarf of varying colors in the mail over the next few days, along with a personalized letter.]

With Christmas coming up and school officially over for some of us, I thought it might be time to try something fun. I've heard about people doing secret Santa things among coworkers, and while I wouldn't necessarily say that people on the network have that kind of relationship, I thought it might be something fun to consider, with all of the heaviness going on lately.

I'm not really anticipating a lot of people to want to get involved, since you'd have to figure out some way to get a gift to another person, and identities and all of that, but for those people who might be interested, maybe a small thing, like ten dollars tops? Or even just a nice gesture for someone, to spread some holiday cheer around the numbers. I'd be happy to help coordinate, obviously, since I suggested the idea in the first place.

Large get-togethers are probably out, considering what happened the last time that happened, but maybe a few smaller collections of them around New Years might work? I know I'm busy through the 27th, but would be open to anything after that. Does anyone have anything going on? Let's collaborate.

[Private to Ez, off-network text]

I just heard from my mom. My father wants me to invite you to our family Christmas dinner. You don't have to come. In fact, I highly recommend you fake some kind of illness, if that's saying something.

[Private to Brooke, Banagher and Zelos, text]

What do you want for Christmas?

[after school | closed -> open]
She'd been dreading this day. )

[afternoon and evening | open]
Shortly after the meeting was adjourned - they'd waited several minutes for Winter to calm down enough to leave before finishing up, then edited out her crying out of respect (and the faculty advisor glaring holes through anyone stupid enough to object) - the audio was posted to the school's website, as was normal. Someone, however, decided this was important news to share, and within a few more minutes it made its way to Twitter. However it got there, Winter clearly had made a few enemies, and word spread quickly. She got a text message from the advisor later that afternoon to warn her, and her tears came anew; her feet had carried her to a park bench relatively near the school, where she'd been since, and now she just wanted to hide somewhere and never come out.

Some time later that evening, she'd actually even made it onto the evening news - this was serious, and they'd been gobbling up anything they could get their hands on regarding the drug bust at the high school. They hadn't been able to use her name, but the story about "a Locke City High School senior" being dismissed from the student council for "severely overstepping her bounds" was plenty damaging - and identifying - enough. They'd tried to get a quote from the advisor, but what aired was something that almost lifted her spirits a little, amounting to "that girl is already traumatized enough without anyone else's help," and "I don't believe this was the right decision - what does this teach our children if we punish a girl for trying to help in the only way she can?" In the back of her mind, Winter was pretty sure she wouldn't be seeing the advisor again, either, but she wasn't going to worry about that now. Right now, she just felt dead inside. The phone rang all night, but she didn't dare touch it. The same went for her cell phone - unless she recognized the number, or it was coming across from the network, she just let it ring.

Hi, everyone.

So that happened. I guess there's not much to say that hasn't been touched on already. It seems so quiet without the buzzing. I hope that wasn't one of you guys.

If it was, you should have said something.

[That's not all she wants to say to whoever did it. But it's the only thing suitable for polite company. A hundred people died.

She still suspects the enemy more, though.]

I was wondering, though, and something that happened during the quake reminded me: How often do two or more people receive related memories? Is anyone keeping track?

((ooc note: just pretend this was before Brooke's post, whoops. I managed to miss it somehow.))

This has been a little while coming, but we have some information from Detective Sherman and the corrupt police about the enemy and what they know about the Network.

Yes, this is legit, which I guess I have to specify now that we've got people who think it's funny to impersonate law enforcement.
Info behind the cut! )
Most of this is from Sherman and the Sheriff, so - feel free to take it all with a grain of salt.

[Aaron sounds harried, tired, and is speaking quickly.]

I don't have much time to talk, considering the recent disaster and our influx of patients, but there are a few things I need to tell this network.

One, Julien and I made our way into the Dead District not long ago and examined the bomb sites. Each one had small fragments of an unusual stone in the surrounding area -- it looked ordinary enough, but it didn't match anything in the area. Consider the facts: we found no signs of conventional bombs. Our enemy has demonstrated before that it is capable of causing explosions without the use of conventional bombs, and the rock fragments were at each bomb site. Finally, the snake statues some saw shortly before the bombing disappeared directly after it, and we've compared the fragments to a piece of the first Dead District snake statue.

I believe that the statues themselves were the bombs. I don't know how they are triggered, only that it must be from a remote location, since there were no human remains at the bomb sites that we could see. If more statues are encountered, treat them cautiously!

Two --

[And here, he falters a little.]

-- I owe you all an apology. I've had information about what is below Tuning Towers for some time now -- since the buzzing started -- but kept it to myself. I was afraid that someone would do something foolish; there had been talk of bombs, and we have already had individuals risk themselves by attacking the building. I didn't want to think about what would happen if I specified a target.

But its existence has been discovered, and I see no benefit in keeping it from you any longer. The thing below the Towers is alive. I'm sure of it. I have a pulse-ability that lets me hear things that are moving on or in the earth, and I -- I heard it moving, slowly and ponderously, like a great root carving its way through the earth. That was what I thought, anyway, until I heard that someone had looked into Locke City's history. The local natives had stories about a giant two-legged snake, a - a spirit or a god. I'm not saying that it is a god -- but I do believe that what we are dealing with inspired the legends. The shape of it is about right.

...I wish I had better news, or that I had any idea how to go about dealing with it. If it is indeed Target 1, what does Thunder Corp want with it? It seems more dangerous alive to me than dead, but how does one kill a giant stone snake the size of a city block?

...I just don't know.

[He's silent for a moment. Then:]

LSR Clinic was far enough from the business district that the earthquake did not affect us directly, but we have been treating many more ordinary patients than usual lately. If you come in for a Numbers-related ailment and you are visibly abnormal, it would be best to notify us beforehand, and to use the back entrance.

[...and...that's it. He ends the recording.]

[Sam looks different. He's got about twice as much bulk to him, and it's all muscle. He's also got horns sprouting out of his head, though one is broken off about half way down. The ripped work uniform failing to cover his chest suggests that he was at work when the quake hit, as does the piles of debris in the background.]

Got through it all without a scratch. Or rather, I got banged up, but the injuries just closed up on their own. Creepy, but convenient. The only other employee back here is unconscious, and I'm worried about them, but...

[He grabs at the horns, but they are securely fused to his skull and don't seem like they're gonna come off.]

There's too many frightened people here! I can't make them go away! How do I leave without being seen as some sort of demonic freak!?

[Hello there Numbers Club! It's everyone's favorite support checking in. No video this time, only voice, since she's at home with at least one of her parents.]

We're okay. That was kind of scary. I've never really been through an earthquake before. Are there even faults out here?

How about everyone else? Everyone okay? I think the worst we got was some shaking. Felt like the ground was jell-o. On one hand, it was kind of cool; on the other, really, really freaky. But anyway.

Mom's been gone since late last night. She sent me an email around one saying that things are hectic at the hospital. There are tons of injured, a lot more than they were expecting, even with the biggest tremors being within the city proper. Right now they're citing infrastructure; I don't buy it.

Anyway, there's a bulletin going around the school email that we'll be collecting items over the next week to help those in need that may have been displaced during all of this. If there's anything in particular that you're short on, let me know.

I know there are probably some people without power, and I'm not sure if you can see this, but this should go without saying. Be careful. I'm not talking about just Numbers stuff. I don't know what caused this, although I definitely have my suspicions. I don't know if there will be any kind of aftershocks... although we probably would have felt them by now if there were. Which, thinking about it, yeah, this probably wasn't natural. So definitely be on your guard.

Stay safe, everyone.

[If you're among her circle of friends (so Ez, Brooke, Banagher, Zelos, Soren, the Dians, Rachel, and Marisa, you'll be receiving a specialized message either off-network--if she has that contact info--or through private network checking in. Feel free to respond to that.]

[To investigation team, sent through the number given at the end of last month]

can someone look into the quakes and see what all has been affected? deaths as they come in, areas affected and in what way. practice caution, things may not be structurally sound and i suspect we'll be watched.

anyone know anything about the sudden construction project by tc? they should have a permit and intended land use board up somewhere, can someone check on that?

safety is priority. don't go alone. don't go in if you feel it's too hot. thank you and good luck.

I'm back. I'm out. I don't know just how much they've decided about me, but I'm out. Richard Locke-- excuse me, Karl-- he let me out. It wasn't his decision to put me in there, they just decided I was suspicious all on their own.

[He sounds tired. And annoyed. And displeased with life in general. He has had a day, network peeps.]

I will not be in class tomorrow. I'm just too tired. The day after that, we'll see.

[He's going to have to be careful, going forward. More careful. So careful. He can't implicate himself further, but worse, he can't implicate any of his students and friends. He's sure they're watching, now.]
