[Kara's staring seriously into the camera when it clicks on, hair pulled up into a messy bun and arms spread business-like across her desk. on her left is an impressive stack of children's valentines (you know the kind, the ones with cartoon characters you buy in boxes for the class party) and on her right is an equally impressive bag of fun size chocolate.]

Greetings, fellow clubmates! I am sorry to be taking up your attention like this, but considering the date I am afraid that it cannot be avoided.

[the way she's speaking makes it seem like this is a life or death scenario, but then she keeps going and...]

In only a few days' time the Day of Valentines will be upon us! We do not celebrate such a holiday at home, but I have done the research on it and know very well that not receiving an affectionate greeting card can cause irreparable damage to one's soul and ruin lives!

[that's how it seemed in the many, many movies she watched that touched on the subject, at least]

I do not wish for my dear Numbered friends to suffer such a tragic fate! There were a great deal of charming cards and sweets on sale which I have taken the liberty of purchasing, and I implore you to allow me to write you at least one of them!

We may arrange for a drop-off point if you are leery of having your identity revealed, but please do not let pride keep you from accepting it! There is only so much time in which I can make these deliveries. I promise that my penmanship is excellent and any good tidings I write will stave off the horrible life-crushing feelings!

They make movies about all kinds of stupid things these days.

Do they? I must admit that I have not seen very many which I disliked, but then I have been so busy here I have not gone to American theaters very frequently. Most of my viewing has been done through the Netflix.

The Netflix, huh. So hey, where are you from, anyway?

Ukraine. I am here to study astrophysics at the university.

Astrophysics? Damn girl, I can barely pronounce that. You're pretty hardcore, huh?

I would not go so far as to say that; I am merely very passionate about the subject and lucky to have people who support me wholeheartedly.

Do ya, now. That's a good thing to hear these days.

Is it something that is uncommon in present times?

You know what, it probably isn't. I'm just being pessimistic.

That is reassuring to hear! I was a bit concerned for a moment.

Naaah, don't be concerned. You just worry about your little valentine crusade or whatever you're doing.

I would not go so far as to term it a crusade, but it will certainly be taking up most of my focus for a time! So I suppose you are correct.

Sounds like you're pretty dedicated. All those cards and candy and crap couldn't have been cheap.

It was a large purchase, yes, but I do not buy very many things on a regular basis so there was a little accumulation to use. It is my, ah, splurge for the year?

So you used your yearly splurge to buy shit for these weirdos? Yooooou've got to be the nicest person ever to exist.

It is not such a momentous action as that! [she laughs] I consider everyone I have met on this network to be my friend, and wish to make them happy on a celebratory day if I can.

Jesus. I think the world needs more people like you. Kinda balance out the cynical assholes like me.

I suspect this may be why I have been given access to this network. There seems to be an overabundance of the pessimists here.

[she laughs]

Huh. That's a good way to look at it. Better than just thinking everyone's here for no reason.

That would be a very difficult perspective to hold here, would it not? There is something very deliberate about past lives.

Honestly, I'm still not even sure where I stand on believing all of this stuff. At least where past lives are concerned. I don't know if the person I keep remembering could have even been considered "alive".

Well, it is merely a turning of the phrase to describe something very abstract. But is there still room for disbelief in that area, after all that has happened?

[her tone is curious, devoid of criticism or judgement. she just wants to hear what his perspective is on this]

Mm. Maybe it isn't so much a matter of disbelief as it is just not understanding. Like, I can see what's happening around here, but I don't get it. So maybe it has me on some weird state of denial.

I guess I really don't know what I'm talking about.

I think I understand. When we study the galaxy, it is so very vast! And many times the only explanations we can find for the phenomena we observe are like something one would dream after eating bad food. Even the scientists wish to join the disbelievers who say it is simply too bizarre to be true.

[she laughs]

But we must continue all the same! Because the only way to receiving the understanding is to stay on the ride until it is over, as unwise as that sounds.

[Wow that really kind of simplifies things somehow. He thinks it over for a moment before replying.]

Well, I've never really been known for wise decisions anyway. Guess that means I'm stuck on this ride until the end.
