[plot] Water in the desert I

Who: Cultists, an alien, and YOU, the (un-)invited numbered!
What: Gossipping. Weird lobster worship. Speeches. Fingerfood and other snacks. Dealing with cultists in general. The beginning of the geographical changes in Las Vegas and appropriate PANIC.
When: 22nd
Where: Thomas & Mack Center; The University of Nevada, Las Vegas
Warnings: People from the ranks of the cultists have committed murder and other crimes in the past; those deeds will, if mentioned, be treated in a glorifying manner or at least be condoned.

The cultist gathering takes place on the evening of the 22nd at the University of Nevada in Las Vegas. The cult has rented the large multipurpose Thomas & Mack Center. The entrances are controlled, the guards cult members who will check the membership of everyone who enters. Numbered with invitations will simply have to either show their invitation or prove that they are the numbered in question; numbered that are not invited but not on the anti-invited list will be let in if they announce interest in their purpose or in learning more about themselves.

There is a large lobster statue in the middle of the hall, a high stage behind it. A pool of water surrounds both, filling the whole center.

A. Arrival and first stage
Snacks and drinks are handed out everywhere and the cultists chat happily with everyone who is around - they will happily talk to numbered as well, calling them "special ones", "superheroes" or "children". Some are rather excited about them being there, others less, but there is clearly nobody that doesn't think positively about it.

B. Ceremony/Worship and Announcements
As the lights go out, people will stop talking and put down whatever they are holding. What follows is a ceremony of roughly an hour that mostly includes singing, meditation and some short speeches on cleansing oneself and being true to oneself, and one on how those that don't do it will fall and burn. Cultists will be happy to give numbered pointers re: what happens next and what they should do.
Afterwards, what seems like all head cultists - those with the sign that causes echoes step on the stage and one after another address the gathered public, some longer, some shorter. Some are of more technical nature - number of members, funds, expansion plans -, others very philosophical, and yet others religious. There is talk of the city being lost and impossible to clean, but that the those who trust in Refined Shell will be saved. That all members may take it into their own hands to clean themselves and help the world be cleaner, but that soon, Refined Shell will be with them, and her children with her. Her children will guard her and be guided by her, as they all should be; and though it is harder for them to see their true core than it is for normal humans, and many will be lead astray, those that succeed will lead the world to a better future, and those that follow Refined Shell now will be the first when that time comes.

At this point, they'll call out to all numbered in the audience, and cultists sitting nearby numbered people will encourage them to get down to the stage, wade through the water and get up there to introduce themselves and say hi. The whole audience will cheer for those that dare to go down, and they'll be offered a seat on the stage.

C. Aftermingle and Panic
After the official part is done, there is general mingling and people are slowly starting to leave... just as the first earthquake hits the room. And then another one, and then steam rises from the water in the middle of the hall, and after a bit it starts to boil. The handful of cultists that is packing up on stage screams in terror at their only way off it suddenly being made up of boiling water, and most of the cultists leave the building in similar panic. FUN ALL AROUND.

"Mister Umbrael, then. Welcome to Las Vegas. How are you finding the Shell's hospitality?" He's talking fairly fast, almost like a politician, but he hasn't asked Umbrael for money yet so that's good, right?

That is good, because giant dinosaurs don't have pockets so Doyle's flat broke right now.

"Oh, um, pretty good, everyone's been nice, nothing's tried to kill me yet, so, I'd say it's going well. Pretty good, thanks, how are you?" he says, blurting that last part out before he can shut his mouth.

One half of him is a little incredulous that these are the questions he's getting after the singing and chanting and philosophizing, the other part of him is reliving every school presentation or public speaking he's ever done in his life ever and they were all disasters. Don't make eye contact with the audience, Ossie, never do that.

"Oh, fine, fine. Don't worry about me." The man waves Umbrael's question off. "Are you at risk for death a lot, then? Monsters, evil-doers, what have you? Are you not protected in Locke City?"

He raises his eyebrow, and first he wonders how this guy hasn't heard any of this stuff already, and second he wonders if maybe that's information he should be wary about. But... Nah. It was all over the news by now, and if not there then it's probably come up in the fansites and subreddits, right?

"Uh, well, occupational hazard, I guess? We haven't been too popular there lately, and, uh, in the last year we've had snake statues and little monster-things coming after us, and a police conspiracy, and it all sorta ended in a huge snake attacking the city..."

He pauses as he glances out at the audience (crap) and notices the giant lobster statue, and connects that with children of the shell.

... Hmm. He returns his attention to the guy, shrugging as he finishes off:

"And, ah, word is, you guys killed one of us, so. Cause for some wariness."

The man keeps up his jovial politician mannerisms, but he noticeably tenses when Umbrael mentions the murders. "Did we now? I haven't heard anything about any of us killing a Child." Just rumors that it should be done to keep the rest pure, of course.

Doyle's eyebrow is still raised, and his ear on that side of his head slowly tilts up too, like a curious dog or animal or something.

"Really?" he says lightly, "Because that's been going around a lot on our end. You might want to start looking into that, because after the trouble we had in Locke, that kind of news makes us feel targeted, and we start getting a little nervous."

During the ceremony, he had felt yet another pulse, and could tell already that it was a memory of some kind, but he hadn't thought too hard about it yet. But whatever it was had left him feeling a little more responsible for other numbered people - or maybe he was just more confident, enough to get more active in this network business. Maybe the thrill of being 'human' again had worn down enough for him to return to being cautious towards non-numbered bearing gifts.

Or maybe it was all a mask and role to step into so he can ignore that he's still on stage in front of a bunch of people.

"Y-yes." The man glances around, nodding at someone off to the side and moving away from Umbrael. "Well, it's been lovely chatting with you but I simply must leave, important business elsewhere, you understand. Goodbye!" And he starts to head off, clearly unnerved.

Oops - the sudden drop of the conversation and need to leave despite the big showy presentation earlier and the other responses he's been getting from these guys makes Doyle realize maybe that didn't quite come out right.

Both ears are perked for a moment, before he tries to follow and catch the guy by the sleeve.

"Uh, wait - hold on," he says quickly, a little worried and surprised-sounding despite that serious tone he had a moment ago.

The man pulls away, trying very obviously to escape the conversation. "No, I'm sorry, I really must tend to this situation!" he says. "Forgive me!"

Well, shit, hopefully he didn't scare the guy. One part, because it really wasn't what he was going for, but another one is that if he's seen as a threat, the might be the next one found face-down in a pool.

"Uh- that wasn't a threat or anything!" He blurts out, hopefully not getting too much more attention, though he's focused mostly on the guy getting away.

"Just - y'know, so we're clear!"

Fuck, he knew it- one more public appearance that ended embarrassingly.
