[She had never imagined finding something like this so soon after arriving in the States. Though nearly breathless with excitement, Misa attempts to keep herself in check and remain at least a little bit professional. Beaming at the discovery is impossible to cover up, but she manages to avoid blurting out the first question that comes to mind in favor of a thought-out response.]

Hello, my name is Misa Amane! I’m new here and I’d love to have a conversation with anyone who has been here a while, or has information about what’s been going on. The news has been pretty crazy, but if you want to share your stories then I’m here to listen!

We do have a few local ones, but they've had mixed track records at best.

I think the Locke Chronicle has been the most neutral. Check it, it's either that or the Tribune.

You might be able to.

You would potentially be working for papers that regularly release biased or outright deriding opinions about the Numbered, but unless you echo something in front of them, it's simple enough to hide.

I wouldn't want to work with evil people like that, but if it's the best way to reach people then I'll do it. How would they tell when I got an 'echo'?

They would know if you suddenly had some obvious visible difference, like echoing back, say, bright white hair while talking with them.

Other than that, it's not always obvious.

We do. Luckily, most of the obvious changes seem to happen when people aren't in public.

That's good... but it must be pretty shocking. Do you get used to changes like that?

I assume everyone does, to a degree.

I haven't had many changes like that, myself, so I can't tell you for certain.

Can you tell me what changes have happened for you?

Mostly mental.

I've gotten a few memories, and what I suspect might be personality traits. It's one of those cases where it's hard to be sure, because the traits aren't wildly different from what was already there.

Oh, nothing huge. I have better stamina for research, now. I enjoy it more, and I make more use of what I see.

[That's not at all the sort of answer Misa was expecting. It almost sounds like a good change, without obvious drawbacks. Still an unsettling notion, but she wouldn't mind suddenly being a better reporter...]

Maybe I downplayed it too much.

Before, I was an average engineer. Now I have at least four patents currently pending, a few papers in various stages of completion, and a job that involves pushing scientific boundaries in ways that most people can only dream of.

[Misa's eyes nearly bug out of her head reading that. Even if he's exaggerating, that's still incredible.]

If we knew how these mysteries worked, we would already have answers to so many other questions. Yes, I think echoes were responsible for it, but I don't know how or why.

I can't imagine all that coming from nowhere. You were already an engineer, so it has to be related.

No! All I have so far is remembering two faces and a weird TV message. But I've already met one of them here, so I'm sure I'll find out more with him.

Out of curiosity, do you remember anything about your Other's world? Any strange science or magic at all?

[The question surprises Misa. Not that a giant L appearing on TV with a scrambled message is what she considers normal, but it's a far cry from magic.]

How strange. Or perhaps this is perfectly understandable, and it's the rest of us that don't make sense.

You said earlier that you had a chance to meet one of those faces in the Numbered, didn't you? Did it help you make sense of the unusual message?

Not really! It made some things more complicated. One of the faces I saw was 'Ryuzaki', and the weird message was from someone called 'L', but now it seems like those are the same person. It's pretty mysterious! But exciting. I don't know what to think about being friends with someone here in a past life, but it's nice to feel a little less alone in this place.
