13th Howl: The After School Numbers Club [Action at the high school]

As promised, there are snacks on a couple of the lab tables in Lyall's classroom when school gets out that Monday afternoon. Not much of it is chocolate, though, mostly because Lyall had been pretty sure he'd have been tempted to nibble and then he'd have regretted it. It's not all healthy, though, considering the appetites of teenage boys: next to the cheese and crackers and celery with ranch and peanut butter dip on a platter, there's chips and pretzels and an open box of cookies.

And on the other tables, there are decks of playing cards, small pads of paper, and plenty of pencils, plus a couple science and math books. Hey, Lyall has to make it look like a school event for anyone who wants to poke their head in, after all, right?

Lyall himself is sitting at the counter in the front with his laptop open, though he's paying more attention to the door than the screen at the moment, waiting for students to come in. Stella the ferret is in presence, too, though she might be anywhere in the room at any given time. Lyall has given up on wrangling her, ever since learning she was sentient.

"Even though you're a big time perfectionist student?" Bakura grinned, leaning back and turning the drawing around to show off, pride radiating off his posture as he waited to see Kurt's reaction.

"Thing is, if you just do your homeowork, it doesn't actually take that much time." But he abandoned what was fast becoming an old argument to look. "Well, that's pretty awesome," he said, admiring the drawing but not totally following. He'd been thinking of neat stuff as more like his porting or the ice powers he'd just heard about.

"Isn't it? He's just not all here yet, he's supposed to be solid, but he's not yet, though really, that's probably a good thing right now, since even though I kinda knew how big he would be, it's pretty different between remembering how he looked in an open temple verses seeing him here, you know? And I don't know if he can do any attacks yet, I really don't want to risk trying that, but I'm pretty sure he should since he battled against the monsters the priests had."

"So your thing is way different," Kurt said, and then felt silly for coming up with something so banal. "I mean, you get how it works and it actually ties to your memory stuff. That's neat. Cool summonable entity." He wanted one.

"Only a bit, since its sort of like a partial summon," Bakura corrected, still grinning. "But yeah, it's totally cool! And one of the flashbacks even had those bastard priests talking about how everything worked. Sort of makes me wonder if he really was with me all the time, and since I just had no idea anything about him, I just wasn't ever aware so there'd be no chance I could have summoned him."

It was bit like one of the other flashbacks... one of the ones where he was fighting against himself. Something had to happen before the one of him could hear the other.

"That's almost unfair. I didn't remember anyone giving me teleporting lessons..." Ah, well, at least he'd been able to figure it out a little on his own. "So, uh, what does he do when he's here all the way? Besides look really cool." Which might be a job unto itself, actually.

"Maybe you just haven't gotten to them yet? And it wasn't like they were giving me lessons. They were actually being snotty saying I was evil and the pissing their pants because Daibound is a god instead of a demon."

So much smug pride in that. Sooo much.

"And he can fight, go through walls and take me with him, though I'm mot sure I wanna try that one just yet since he's not all here!" he laughed, rubbing the back of his neck a moment. "And I think there's other stuff too, because he can evolve, like a pokemon, but just much much cooler."

"I dunno, Pokemon are pretty cool." That was a heck of a laundry list. But going through walls had potential. It'd work well with teleporting, if there was a job for two people on the other side. "What's the difference between gods and demons, here?" Kurt was fairly religious in an absentminded kind of way, but his mind went far more immediately to fantasy novels than the terms in their usual Christian sense.

"I'm not actually too sure. Just that a good soul gives birth to a god and an evil soul gives birth to a devil. But they kinda had their heads up their asses about what was good and what was evil so I don't even know," Bakura shrugged.

"Kay." Those were rules that would make sufficient sense if he stumbled across them in a comic book. He could move forward with that. Though that line of thinking made him wonder if they needed different colored power crystals for their spells or something. "Lucky you got some cheater notes. That sounds hard to follow."

"A little, yeah. I guess they were showing off to somebody talking about it that they did cause the me in the flashback knew that crap already and made fun of them cause they were so full of themselves. But it actually isn't that complicated, I don't think. Or maybe I just understand it because of those flashbacks."

[spideyfanone]

"Is flashback right?" He sort of hoped not, but he wasn't sure how to ask about it without inviting questions back. "It's not really us we're remembering, right? It's whole other places and people and it's in our heads for whatever reason..." He was trying hard not to identify with the one really concrete memory he had.

[shiromadoushi]

"It's a flashback in a movie even if it's to something where none of the characters were involved, right?" Bakura reasoned. "And..." he hesitated a moment, expression settling to one far more serious than he had shown all afternoon as his borrowed pencil tapped the human figure in the drawing. "This is me. Diabound is a creature of soul, the soul that shows the person's true self that can leave the body.... I don't think he could be with me if that wasn't me."

...not that it explained the other visions that didn't match up... but....

"Well, uh, can't argue with that." And only partly because it didn't make any damn sense. The memory felt like him, though he wasn't sure why, the strange way everything looked and felt physically, never mind the emotional mess. He'd been thinking of a flashback in a more psychological sense, which had had some hope of giving him plausible deniability, but Bakura was probably right.

"Might be different for everybody else!" Bakura smiled, serious moment over with. "And besides. Not all the flashbacks I see match up anyway. Cause I'm pretty sure they never had TRPGs in ancient Egypt."

[spideyfanone]

And good riddance to it. "Yeah, they'd have to use stone monuments, and that's just impractical." He tried for a smile, trying not to think too hard about the possibility that his only concrete memory was some kind of inaccurate noise and wouldn't match up with anything to follow.

Because I can't resist him unknowingly making accurate jokes :D

"Aaa, but see! They're already using stone slabs for soul monsters! So if it were anything, it would be the world's heaviest card game!"

If any come up that are actually pertinent, I'm sure to do the same thing.

"Be kind of a pain to need a bunch of camels and a cart to get to every tournament. And how is trading supposed to work?"

They'll have to hit up a comic shop next :D

"I know, right? And it would take you an hour just to play your turn, just getting the cards on the field!"

[spideyfanone]

"That must be why they moved to papyrus scrolls. Save all the camels and scantily-clad slaves some work." He smiled more easily now, pushing the whole memory thing away again. "Or maybe they just went to play ancient D&D with whoever had the Voynich manuscript."

[shiromadoushi]

"Wouldn't that be awesome if it were true?" Bakura laughed, grinning up a storm. "Oh man, could you imagine how many old stories were just retellings of epic campaigns? The Odyssey is a warning against pissing off the DM~!"

[spideyfanone]

"Man, have you ever looked up the Voynich manuscript? Made up language, pictures of animals and plants that don't exist, endless mysterious symbols... If it wasn't an rpg I don't know what it was." He managed to look totally serious. He half was.

[shiromadoushi]

"Duh," Bakura returned. "But history's never what we think it is if we look on it with modern eyes."

A pause.

"Besides. It was totally White Wolf, not D&D."

"Hey, just 'cause you can't read the manuscript doesn't mean you have to assume it's that badly written." Kurt's experiences with White Wolf may have had more to do with the books, solo adventures, and video games. After all, tabletop required having at least a couple of people to hang out with regularly. The bits that could be done online, however, like complaining about the system and the prose, he was an expert in.
