savetheearth | 13th Howl: The After School Numbers Club [Action at the high school]

As promised, there are snacks on a couple of the lab tables in Lyall's classroom when school gets out that Monday afternoon. Not much of it is chocolate, though, mostly because Lyall had been pretty sure he'd have been tempted to nibble and then he'd have regretted it. It's not all healthy, though, considering the appetites of teenage boys: next to the cheese and crackers and celery with ranch and peanut butter dip on a platter, there's chips and pretzels and an open box of cookies.

And on the other tables, there are decks of playing cards, small pads of paper, and plenty of pencils, plus a couple science and math books. Hey, Lyall has to make it look like a school event for anyone who wants to poke their head in, after all, right?

Lyall himself is sitting at the counter in the front with his laptop open, though he's paying more attention to the door than the screen at the moment, waiting for students to come in. Stella the ferret is in presence, too, though she might be anywhere in the room at any given time. Lyall has given up on wrangling her, ever since learning she was sentient.

"Oh, um, that's fine. No problem." If he weren't trying so hard not to talk about it, he probably wouldn't have been struck so hard. And he felt even more like a creep, because Bakura was talking about his real, actual dad. "Magic sounds good. I can play with just the skull ones?" Though he wasn't quite so much in the mood for morbidity.

"Sure! I can put you together a black deck, no problem," Bakura nodded, getting to his feet awkwardly around the desk. "You can even keep it, on one condition~"

"Oh, you don't have to give me stuff. I mean, my old ones might even still be around somewhere." Though if there was a condition it wasn't as iffy a proposition as it might have been.

"Yeah, but these are here. And I have too many and no one to play against. Follow my drift?" Bakura grinned, walking over the stacks of cards.

"Except for, like, everyone in the room," Kurt observed, but quietly. Whatever. He got up too, with his usual clumsiness, half knocking his notebook off the table and tripping a bit on the chair leg he'd been wrapped around. It was pretty impressive, even for him.

"Well, yeah, but I'm making them all the same offer too," Bakura returned before pausing to blink at the klutzy scramble.

Defeated by a desk...

Kurt briefly bothered to glare balefully at the desk, but his relationship with solid objects being what it was, he knew it wasn't to blame. "Okay. Sounds pretty boring to just play with newbs, though."

"Aaa, but you underestimate my master strategy!" Bakura grinned. "For within this offer of free cards comes a challenge! Because why you may be newbs now, soon, very soon, the urge to do as well with cards as you do with all other things with start to sneak in, causing you to start down the path of a true master of strategy!"

"No fair taking advantage of my pathological perfectionism." But sneaky. And effective. He could respect that. After all, who was going to enforce fairness?

Bakura made a pleased, self satisfied sound. "Just putting it to good use~"

Outmaneuvered and willing to admit it, Kurt just picked up his hulking graphing calculator and pointed it Bakura, pressing random buttons. "Pewpew, homework lasers."

"Your puny homework based attacks have no effect! For this hoody has a +10 defense against homework!" Bakura boasted with a laugh before turning back to the cards. "So, black cards! Death, decay and the undead, fun stuff~"

"I'd make a pretty good lich," he declared, moving over to take a look. He really hadn't given the game any thought since it had frustrated his immature attention span once upon a time.

"Have enough ambition to tell Death where to stick it?" Bakura grinned, pulling out a few cards to pass over to the younger student.

"Because I could not stop for death, he kindly stopped for me. And then we played card games." Kurt was only mostly a science nerd. He read other books, too!

That gets you another high five, Kurt. "And if you beat him, you get another go at life. Only with some nasty side effects~"

"I thought that was chess. And that everyone had to be sad and black and white. ...And Norwegian." He considered a moment. "Does that count for nasty side effects?"

"Different game, different end results," Bakura grinned, pulling out a pile of swamps to hand over. "I'll leave it to your imagine what happens when you beat him in Thermo Global Nuclear war."

And time for another small adjustment in subject matter. He managed it more gracefully this time. "Ha, cool, everything's gross and drippy." More gracefully, not actually gracefully.

What, not a fan of War Games? For shame.

"If you think just the land is gross, wait til you see more of the monsters!"

He could get everything. He'd been pretty on so far. "I'm looking forward to it. Though now I'm picturing a bunch of zombie frogs and crocodiles and... herons. ...Cus it's a swamp." Everyone loves biogeography jokes?

"Maybe a zombie heron. Death heron! I don't know," Bakura smiled. "Mostly it's a lot of movie style undead types, not really many animals or anything like that, those are mostly in green."

"Did you know there's a thing actually called a black-crowned night heron? The most metal thing to ever eat small fish and amphibians and inhabit wetlands." Random factoids were always interesting. "There's one in a little zoo near where my grandma lives."

"Dude, seriously?" Bakura blinked, eyes widening a touch. "Does it look as cool as it sounds?"

Kurt looked a bit sheepish. "Sadly, no. It looks like a random bird. I guess it's kind of a big bird? With a black spot on its head." It definitely didn't live up to the implied badassery.
