[ It's been a few weeks now since Teagan has made a video post to the network. At least since the incident that destroyed half of the city, as far as he can remember. He's been busy and more anti-social than normal. He comes onto the screen though, looking good. Very good, as if he had been photo-shopped to seem almost ideal. He's using that to his advantage, keeping his ear tips hidden as best he can manage, but it can't hide that his eyes are most definitely deeply and utterly tired.

He sighs through his nose, pouring himself a glass of wine as he speaks. ]

My nephew, it seems, has decided that now is a good time to move back to Locke. If you ask me, he's looking for an excuse to find adventure in destruction, as young men are want to do. We all have to learn on our own that helping others isn't about adventure and excitement but about doing the right thing for those in need, he might as well learn now.

[ He sips his wine, thinking, before he continues. ]

The question remains, though, how to keep all of this from him. He doesn't need to know any of it, and he'll be better off that way. As he wants to stay in my cabin, I'm open to suggestions.

[As good as Teagan seems to look, Eliot has to frown at how tired his eyes look. He's not sure what else he can give his friend to help him sleep anymore, that is the most frustrating part.]

At the very least you should be honest with him. As for how to keep it from him, well, you may not be able to if he is determined to find it out.

[ attempting to sleep for more than a few hours seems futile, and as he pieces together the memory he echoed back the past weighs heavier and heavier upon him. He feels older, now, than he ever has before, and it shows where Eliot's attention is focused. ]

He doesn't need the burden, and I don't intend on putting my sister's son in danger.

And if he finds out anyway? I know you wouldn't do such a thing but whether you inform him or not does not take the danger out of what may happen, Teagan.

And you're not sleeping. [It's not a question or an accusation, Eliot is simply stating it out of concern.] You shouldn't forget to look after yourself.

If he finds out anyway it won't be from me. That lessens the danger at the very least.

[ He pauses, not out of hesitation but merely in thought. ] I'm not forgetting, though I can't say the same for my subconscious. Be grateful you haven't gotten back anything so distressing as I have.

The who should he find it out from?

I'm troubled I have not been able to find something which will give you some kind a break from those visions. Has the burning sensation improved?

You'd better go roll in the mud or something then, because he might notice that you seem to have caught the getting younger bug. [Gabriel grins, teasing as ever. But it doesn't quite erase the worry from eyes that aren't quite as weary, but Gabriel certainly hasn't been sleeping well either.]

Do you need to keep it from him? Now things are out in the open? It might be easier to keep him safe if he knows what he's being exposed to. Assuming you can trust him, of course.

[ That's not funny Gabriel. Teagan frowns, pushing hair back behind his ear self-consciously. It's getting too long, but he can't be bothered to get it cut. ]

One issue at a time, I think. He's coming back to work, he doesn't need this sort of wild distraction.

[The motion catches Gabriel's attention and his eyes are drawn to his ears, taking in the changes there --

And then he feels the now familiar hollow feeling of the start of an echo, followed by first a tingling and then a sharp pain in his ears.]

Shit. [He cuts the feed quickly.]

[He comes back five minutes or so, hair tucked behind newly pointed ears. When he speaks, his voice sounds odd to him, aside from the now ever present language trouble. Too loud, and as a result he tries to soften it.]

Sorry. What were we - ah.

When would be the right time for him to find out, then?

[ Well that was abrupt. Teagan may have even texted Gabriel asking what had happened, but there he was again, and. Oh. Well, if anything was a confirmation that they were both elves from the same place that would be it. He does look mildly sympathetic about it and responds in Sindarin. ]

It seems you're going to have to leave the spotlight sooner than you thought, or devote yourself to a collection of hats.

[ And then in english: ]

Never, preferably.

Hats won't save me in the make up chair, sadly. [Gabriel understands Sindarin, but can't speak it, so he replies in English.]

Better to have a time of your choosing than have him find out by accident.

The harder you try to hide things, the more some people notice just so you know. Especially if he's the nosy sort.

He's not.

[ To be entirely honest he doesn't remember if Liam is nosy but it's the principle of the thing. ]

How are you going to hide the rest of the crazier Numbered people out in the city? Some of them are not exactly subtle.

I'm not his mother, and he's an adult. If he wants to get involved in this mess than so be it, but it won't be through me.

Up to you I guess. If you're lucky enough not to have any too-obvious physical changes it might not be too hard if you don't access the network at all around him.

Good on him, I guess! Honestly it's hard to keep things like this from people you're living with. Maybe you'd be better off telling him to stay somewhere else.

I may not even be around all that often, with the temporary offices opening. He may simply have the cabin to himself, and I won't deny him that.

I guess. Network stuff, network people are suddenly very interesting to the non-networked. If he's observant he might pick up more than you want, even if he doesn't poke around.

I want to ask around about how good the athelas is at dispelling or preventing nightmares. Like... I don't know, I think it helps with mine but I don't think it's doing as good a job as when I got my plant. How about you?

[ Oh the Athelas. He sighs. ]

I lost it in the wreckage. I had it on my desk and it, unfortunately, my desk went with everything else in the building. It's still growing, in a patch under the wreck where the building as, but I don't expect that surprises you.

Aaaah.

I noticed when I was doing clippings and transplants, sometimes if pieces of root come off and get left in the dirt they'll grow and send up shoots. But... It's not going to take over the city, is it? Would it even do any good to have it pulled up?

I wouldn't let them pull it up.

[ He sighs again, jaw tight. ] I felt compelled to let it be. Perhaps it has something to do with my former self, or the nature of the plant. Either way it's been quartered off for now.

Huh.

Is the spot going to be rebuilt? Surely even athelas can't survive that. Is this going to be like Elvish kudzu or something?

Honesty is supposedly the best policy, but it's far from the only policy.

Honesty is only the best policy in intimate relationships, and I would rather keep my nephew safe than worry about how much he likes me as a person.

[ And he doesn't feel like answering that question sorry. ]

You have no handle you use? Just your number? That's probably the most careful way to go about interactions on the network.
