"There was a book on the ground. I thought someone had dropped it, but I think it probably got there by itself. It attacked me before I managed to pick it up."
And it's probably obvious that he's struggling to keep it on the ground now. He'd stand on it with both feet if he didn't know that would be a very bad idea, since he already has to have his arms raised to keep his balance.

He plants one foot on the book as well, right next to John's. Sorry about the invasion of personal space, buddy.
"Jeez," he says, quickening the removal of pages. "What is it, a body builder's manual or something?"

"I don't know. Do you see anything on the spine?"
He leans back some, since he's got help now and doesn't need to be quite so careful about keeping his weight there. He can't actually see anything, though, and he doesn't lean too far before he returns to focusing on holding the book down.
"This is a problem."
