[ Text - Handwritten]
[ For context an hour or so prior to making this post, Derek gave in let his echoed howl happen, which ended up being a little bit louder than expected. Loud enough to be heard roughly halfway across the city. Give or take a few blocks.
To those further away, it would have sounded like an eerie but passable wolf howl. To those closer to the university grounds, there would have had an added ‘rumbling’ to the sound, lower in pitch and more reminiscent of a growling noise. ]
One of these days I’d like an echo that isn’t traumatic or problematic. No more strange ‘abilities’ that aren’t very useful. No more ‘visions’ of dying or killing someone. Something simple and unimportant for once. Or at least something with instructions.
We can all just agree that the ‘mysterious’ sound was a wild animal, right? And move on without acknowledging it further than that.

Oh, wait, what part of the university?
[handwritten]
[handwritten] -> [action]
[Which means about twenty minutes later, he's on campus walking towards the main area, with a backpack tossed over one shoulder.
Flashbacks to ten years ago, yup.]
[action]
At least there's no one around to see him. Especially when he begins to rather loudly complain about his own hearing. ]
[action]
He heads over, one eyebrow raised.]
Is that how you were going to find me?
[action]
He turns and absently folds his arms. ]
What did you think I was going to do? Wander around aimlessly?
[action]
A little bit, yeah, but your way's better. Does that mean you've adjusted to the hearing?
[action]
Not completely. High-pitched noises still give me a headache, but i'm getting the hang of it.
[action]
No more dog whistles, then, got it.
[He shrugs his shoulder, sliding the backpack more in front of him.]
The book I've got's in here. But, uh, a little bit of a warning - some of the stuff in there isn't exactly family friendly.
[action]
None at close range at least. Several miles away would be fine.
[ He snorts and makes a 'hand it over' gesture. ]
If I faint at the horrors within, call an ambulance.
[action]
Got it. But hey, at least it'd be a quick way of getting your attention.
[He makes a face back, but unzips the bag and hands the book over. It's old - really old, leather bound with thick parchment pages, all of the entries handwritten in ink.]
Dude, no way, I don't want to explain why I have what's basically a 'how to hunt down supernatural creatures and all the ways to kill them' guide, like some kind of weirdo.
[The names of the entries are nearly all in German, but each of them is accompanied by a variety of handdrawn pictures - they're clearly all of supernatural creatures the book calls 'Wesen,' most of them some form of animal-related creature. The entries are short, usually only a couple of pages each, focusing primarily on the abilities of each Wesen, the dangers they pose, and how to kill them.]
[action]
It would. You'd also get the attention of several other people and the local dogs.
[ Derek gives a short nod as an oddly-timed ‘thanks’ before starting to look through the book. While he is being careful with it, he’s not stopping to glance over every single page either. ]
I doubt that a medical team would care about your reading preferences. If they did, you could pass it off as incredibly detailed fiction. Or hide it back in your bag.
[ Of course he can’t make heads or tails of the entries in German, other languages were never his strong suit, but he does take in the images. He’s still not entirely certain of what he’s trying to find, just hoping that an entry will stand out and he’ll know that it’s something similar. ]
One of these days I’d like an echo that actually names whatever I’m turning into. [ He pauses. ] Unless an ‘alpha’ is a species.
[action]
So only in extreme circumstances, then.
[He can't help a grin at that.]
But then I'd have to come up with another reason for why you're passed out, and 'he fainted when he read this book' is more entertaining.
[Nick'd marked the most relevant ones with post-its, which have translations written on them for the entries in a different language. The first is Blutbad, a wolf-like creature with red eyes; Schakal, a jackal-like creature; and Coyotl, a coyote creature.]
Yeah, but that'd mean it'd be some kind of information that's actually useful.
[action]
Only when a phone can't be used.
[ Derek pauses to look up and give an unimpressed look. ]
Nice to know that you'd throw my dignity under the bus at the first opportunity.
[ Well those are all vaguely useful entries. Of course, he ends up leaning towards the wolf-like creature though. ]
You're ruining my hope. And I have this unfortunate feeling that the answer to all of this is going to be 'werewolf'.
[action]
I never get to have any fun.
[He holds up his hands in surrender, but the fact that he's still grinning probably ruins that.]
Not the first opportunity.
[Nick suspected as much. It's the one that Monroe'd gravitated towards, too.]
You sound like one of the other werewolves I know. He's really against it turning out to be true, too.
[action]
[ He snorts and shakes his head. ]
Just remember that the payback is always worse.
[ Derek seems to consider the statement before giving a half-shrug. ]
Sounds like a sensible guy. Who willingly wants to turn into a half-beast and run around killing people.
[action]
[But he actually looks pretty pleased at the payback threat.]
Bring it on, man.
[...well when he puts it like that.]
He is, actually. But at least then we'd know what to expect. And preemptively stop the killing part.
[action]
[ That is a good point, being able to stop the killing part early on. ]
Hopefully prevent the killing part.
