So this is really weird and I shouldn't believe it but the paper thing works so it's true I guess. Have any of you ever run into someone, had a vivid memory of them pointing a gun at you, and then gotten assigned to the same group project with them?

Should this worry me?

Guess I don't seem the type. I try to keep in good shape, Judo's one of the ways I do it. I go running a lot, that's what I was doing when we met in the woods.

So just to get this straight, Judo's the one with all of the throwing and grappling, right?

Yeah. I've done some other styles too but that's the one I've stuck with the most.

Huh. Yeah, I would have never expected that. You really don't look the type.

And here I thought the giant martial artist ponytail gave me away.

That wasn't the first thing I thought of when I saw it, honestly. Although really, I don't know what my first thought was, so there is that.

I guess you could say I'm not a typical art student.

Apparently not. I guess that's what I get for trying to judge a book by its cover. Although that makes me seem pretty boring in comparison. I guess, considering the circumstances, someone has to be.

I'm not that exciting myself, really, I'm sure you're plenty interesting. Med students save lives after all. Us artists try not to end up at McDonald's.

I can only hope that I can do something useful, after all of the student loan debt I'll be accumulating over the next six or seven years.

[She shrugs.]

Sorry, unfortunately what you see is what you get. No special skills. Although I've been called the fastest needle in the east.

Don't doctors make six figures?

[Damn, that one usually got at least a chuckle from the people in her department, and questions from anyone else.]

That depends on what they choose to do. Usually the ones you look at who make large sums of money are surgeons or doctors who own their own practices. Not everyone who studies medicine will go directly into hospital work. Some choose to teach, others to go places where they feel they are needed. Those positions don't pay nearly as well.

I guess that makes sense. And here I thought you med students were secure at least.

Like I said, it all depends on what you feel called to do. Well, if you believe in that kind of thing. There are some people who are in it for other reasons, obviously. Family practices or obligations; some like the fast-paced feel of a hospital. It depends on the person.

Do you have other doctors in your family?

Not that I know of. Both of my parents are office workers, and I have a bunch of aunts, uncles and cousins, but none of them work in the medical field either.

[She pauses.]

I think they do just about everything but, actually.

What made you want to be a doctor?

I did some volunteer work in the children's ward when I was in high school. It was probably one of the best things I've done.

Wow. You planning on working with kids then?

That's my hope, at least. What about you? What do you plan on doing with your art degree?

In an ideal world I'd paint some masterpieces for galleries and make millions of dollars on a single painting.

I expect I'll sign on with an advertising firm, either at my father's company or elsewhere depending on where I can find work.

Your father's company?

Yeah, my father runs a successful manufacturing company, he makes upscale tailored clothes and distributes it in the US. He has a lot of shops in China, he's a Chinese national so he has some major advantages in imports and hiring capability.
