[Luci's voice comes on over the network, and she sounds pretty excited.]

I got something back! Not just some vague feeling or a maybe memory, but an actual power! This is completely unexpected! I didn't think in my wildest dreams that I'd be able to use magic or anything like that, especially like this!

It started earlier, and since then, through lots of experimentation, I've been able to figure out the following: I can make things brighter, and I mean REALLY bright, but not darker; I can make little balls of light in my hands, but I'm not sure if they just stay there or if I can do anything with them--I really don't want to accidentally break something in my room; also, this--

[The video turns on to a bright, glowing blond's face. And arms. And yeah everything. It's almost like there are dancing lights underneath her skin. Meet Luci, resident goody two-shoes, overachiever, and now human disco ball.]

Which is really cool, but I haven't actually figured out how to turn it off yet. So, um, help? Anyone?

I can assure you, I may look calm, but I am definitely not calm.

Lots of things. Thinking about light bulbs, darkness, outright telling it to stop. Nothing seems to want to work.

Could've fooled me. Let's see... maybe think about how electrical currents work. Like via switch.

[She sits there for a moment or two, then makes a face.]

If we get too technical, it'll probably start sounding less simple than it actually is, you know? Though I'm not the one glowing right now either.

[ He hums thoughtfully. ]

You're probably right. I'm sure the answer is really simple, but sometimes those are the hardest problems to find solutions to.

[She does too, actually.]

Well, it's not heat-related, I feel cool as a cucumber. I'm not really sure what's powering my little glow spurt here.

"The simplest answer is often the right one" doesn't exactly work out in our situation, huh? At least not all the time.

[ Omg she used 'cool as a cucumber' unironically... ]

Anyway, it's weird to think of light without warmth of some kind. [ A beat. ] You could be like a firefly. Those aren't warm.

[Luci is always cool as a cucumber, don't know what you're talking about. ~~Except when she's not.~~]

I thought of that too, bio-luminescence, but it doesn't quite look or act like that. Usually there's more of a blue or greenish cast, this is more... rainbow-y, for lack of a better term.

Yeah? I never noticed too much, but I haven't actually tried to catch a firefly since I was a kid. It sounds like something I remembered, but it was a machine making the light, not a person.

[ Well, he thinks. ]

What kind of machine?

A really big one. Still, I can't imagine it'd be related, you know? Machines producing light and humans producing light sound like totally different worlds.

[ IS IT REALLY ANY WEIRDER THAN ANYTHING ELSE THOUGH. So he tacks on: ]

I guess mathematics and chemistry aren't that unrelated though.

I'd say they're more like extremely close, but somewhat different cousins. But I see what you mean. And I don't know, are they really that mutually exclusive? I've seen a lot weirder around here.

You got me on that one. You're not even the first person I've met who's glowed, but we didn't exactly figure that out yet, either.

Not if you're serious about illuminating things, or making something out of light. Controlling it, I guess?

Controlling it, definitely. I feel like I could do something with it, other than rent myself out at parties like other people have suggested. Although that could be fun. Luci, the human disco ball. That would probably require me to dance, though, and I'm not very good at that.

I'm not either, and those arcade dance consoles don't count. Still, you probably feel that way for a reason. We all have at one point or another, I bet... it's just that figuring out how to stop glowing might be the first step to finding out why.

Probably. Although Homecoming is coming up.

[She pauses, waits for any kind of response, and smirks.]

I'm kidding. Hmm, let's see. Let's think outside the box here...

[ A kind of amused snort. ]

Be careful, schools are so competitive over that kind of stuff. And I don't think anybody could beat a human disco ball...

[ The sound of a pen tapping. ]

There's no real rhyme or reason to why the pulses or echoes happen... sometimes I feel like it's because we experience similar things. To what we get 'back'.

But I would be twirling a flag in the parade and glowing. Think how cool that would be.

[Okay seriously now.]

Well, I was able to do something similar shortly after going to Tuning Towers, but I didn't make myself glow. I made a ball of light. So what if... ...oh that could work, but how would I...

[She's making hand gestures and whispering to herself.]

[ Focus, focus. ]

...Did you finally think of something?

Yes! But I'm not sure how the mechanics would work.

So when I first made a light ball, it stayed stationary at my hand. At first, I couldn't even get it to completely form up, the energy just stayed at my fingertips. Once I managed to figure out how to visualize releasing it, it took shape. Maybe if I apply the same concept here, that might work...

So it's like just thinking about doing something versus a real concept of it?

Well, in thinking about it, you can figure out the concept behind it. It's simple, really.
