15th Howl: The After School Numbers Club, Finals Week Edition [Action]

It really was too bad that they'd started this up so late in the year. After only a few weeks of meetings, it was finals week, and Lyall, despite doubting he'd get many people studying, had his room set up after class as a good place to get some last minute studying done. His last class of the day had been let go early, giving him a little extra time.

While there were the usual snacks in the back, they were a bit more healthy this time than the last few weeks. While there were decks of cards-- playing cards and various games, both-- out on the lab tables, there were more tables cleared for books, set out with pads of paper and pens. He did have a cake, though, which was probably more silly than serious, upon which was written the words "Happy finals week!" in bright frosting.

Lyall couldn't eat said cake, so the rest of the kids sure had better like it.

Well, that's kind of sobering. With great power comes great limitations, or something? She'd really rather not give up chocolate.

"Um, what kind of visions?"

[professorwolf]

"All kinds, though they do tend to be consistent for each person, as if we are each tied to one other life alone," Lyall explains. He even happily offers a (slightly edited) version of his own "other life", whatever it is. "Mine have all been of a gentleman from England, London I think, who sees ghosts and intelligent wolves on a regular basis, and has apparently met Queen Victoria."

"Queen Victoria...?" breathes Sarah, impressed. That's one of the most famous English people ever! She kind of wonders whether her own other life knew anyone famous or important.

"So, um, why? I mean... why is this happening, and why is it happening to... us?"

[professorwolf]

"Now, that's the biggest question," Lyall admits. "We're not entirely sure. There does seem to be some kind of danger-- those statues in the art gallery are just a part of a much larger, and even stranger, pattern. Do you remember Paul Ben?" He knows the boy wasn't entirely popular, but then again, neither is Sarah. And his death did make the news.

Sarah nods, her face tightening. She hadn't known him very well, but then she hardly knows anyone very well. And when all he did -

But no, getting angry here won't help. She does her best to swallow her temper and slowly says, "I saw... well, I read what... really happened."

[professorwolf]

Actually, it's a bit of a relief to see her look angry, even a little. Lyall offers a small, not-very-happy smile for her. "Then you know not to go to the police. They have most certainly been keeping an eye out for us. How much have you read? All the way back?" That would take a while, given everything that has happened, but then, it's what he'd do. "Or did you just find the beginners guide? I know we have a few 'collections' posts."

"Well, I..." How do you quantify that kind of thing? "I've... read some things, and, um, skimmed some other things." And passed over a bunch, not that she says so.

[professorwolf]

"There is quite a lot there," Lyall agrees with a nod. "It seems like you've found the most important bits. I can give you a run-down to be sure, but it all boils down to, there's trouble of an unknown nature, and we are somehow responding to it in an unknown fashion-- and that is changing us."

"Oh." That's a lot of unknowns.

"Um, what should we do? I mean, if there's trouble..."

This 'we' is, of course, a self-effacing 'I'.

[professorwolf]

"So far, there's not much we can do. The only real source of all this that we're aware of is the police, and going up against them went badly last time." Lyall still feels a bit unnerved by all that, and embarrassed at being so useless. "Right now, we're trying to gather information, meet each other, try to work out what's going on-- when trouble happens, I'm hoping we're a little more prepared."

That sounds like a terrible thing to say to a girl so new to all this, but Lyall is trying to be honest. Not being open about the way things really are could put her in more danger.

"Oh." Disappointing stuff, scary stuff... Still, Sarah doesn't want to be a burden to the team.

"Well, um, I'll... do my best..."

[OOC: This looks like a good time for it.]

Lyall smiles at her as reassuringly as he can. Poor thing. Bringing children into this still bothers him. "I know you will. And don't worry about it too much now-- just focus on what's going on, on the network, and keep yourself out of trouble. Once we know more, we'll all feel better."
