After school, Lyall hurries off campus rather more quickly than usual: he's meeting someone at the museum to discuss cybernetic eyes, for one thing. He's been looking forward to that for a while now. For another, someplace quieter and with fewer people will be more comfortable for his poor, still-overwhelmed nose. Plus, he does rather like the museum, especially the natural history section. That's where he's said he'll meet Chris, so that's where he's waiting for her, staring up at the one full dinosaur skeleton the little place has.

And on top of that, today he has a mission: catch one of those awful little black bugs. Towards that purpose, he has his pockets loaded with plastic bags, test tubes with stoppers, and even a small butterfly net to attempt to catch possessed animals with-- and of course, a wide-brimmed hat to keep the sun off his skin.

Once he and Chris have had their talk, his plan is to go out hunting. He'll be found anywhere around the city, stalking funny-looking birds and cats and testing the air for that tell-tale smell. He probably looks pretty silly doing it, too, but it's for science, dammit. He will put up with looking a little silly.

Yeah, it kind of was, but Lyall was not precisely socialized as well as he'd like. He looked a little embarrassed to have said it, particularly given her expression, but that didn't stop him from having said it. Oh, well. "At the least. Though there are one or two with these numbers, like us, that I am not sure I trust regardless...." Lyall couldn't help himself. There were just some rude people there, and he didn't like rude people.

"Which people," she said. "Personally, I don't really trust anyone, but..."

[professorwolf]

"That woman with the dead crow, I don't think I caught her name... and I'm not sure about Captain Mass, at the fort?" That would likely change after Jack's rescue, but for the moment? Seemed a bit fishy to him. "I don't know. I just don't know what to think about any of it, or any of the people involved. Why us? What do we of all people have in common with each other?"

"I dunno, Mass is arrogant but he gave me a job," she said. "And jerkass girl... actually isn't so bad once you get to know her?"

She shrugged at that next question. "I'm starting to think it's not something obvious. We have something in common, but it's not something you're going to see on the surface. Dunno what it is yet, though."

[professorwolf]

"Definitely not something obvious," Lyall could only agree, but he was more interested in something else she'd said. "The Captain got you a job? At the fort...?"

shit, I forgot to mention that she probably smells faintly of ozone or something electrical oops x-x

"Yeah. I program flight systems, or, well, that's what I've been working on at school, new algorithms for flight control," she said. "He's probably going to have me debug some of the recon craft out there."

actually I think you did in the eye comment? sounds familiar anyway!

[professorwolf]

"Interesting... keep an eye out, I suppose, while you're there?" It was the only thing Lyall could think of. He shrugged and said, "Congratulations on the job. It does sound like an interesting one. I suppose I ought to let you go-- I appreciate you letting me have a smell. Or a look. Whichever."

Sheepish teacher is sheepish.

"This is really not the weirdest thing that's going on," she said. "It's cool."

[professorwolf]

"And it's a sad day when a stranger sniffing your eyes isn't the weirdest thing going on," Lyall said dryly, and tipped his hat to her politely. "I'm sure we'll be in touch, if just over text. Thank you again-- and take care." He still didn't know, after all, what all this meant. Better to be safe than sorry.
