So let's say you picked up something from those statues or whatever and you're having some trouble controlling it. Also, it's not exactly something easy to hide and very limited how often you can use it, but obviously not something a normal person can do. Please don't ask me what it is because I prefer not to discuss that.
What I am looking for is how any others who have gained strange abilities have learned how to control them, especially how to turn them on and off at will. I need ideas to try.

Since I'm sure you are just worried sick about me, Sir Lancelot. I thought I'd let you know that after a night's rest and trying out that other ability that there is no need for this damsel to be rescued any longer. I do appreciate your timely rescue though.

Then again I live with my mom, so in some ways that's worse.

No, it's more the ages from about...oh...8-14 or so that worry me. I was a really, really awkward kid, particularly in middle school. Big head, horrible face-eating glasses, scrawny, weird teeth, thin hair in a horrible bowl cut, looked even younger than I actually was--everything bad you could think of, I was it. On top of this the band uniforms in my middle school were ugly as sin. I was a flat-out ugly nerd. So of course I was a prime target for bullies. I didn't have a lot of friends.
Letting a girl I'm dating see something like that? HORRIBLE idea. It's like finding out how a magician performs their tricks--or worse, pulling the curtain back on the Wizard of Oz. Once the illusion is broken, it's gone forever. How attractive I seem is inversely proportional to how little effort it seems to take.
This is a secret, by the way. I'm trusting you not to spread this around.

But it truly is a shame that people would judge based on things we cannot help. That was another thing I liked about being homeschooled. I learned real fast once I went to a regular school that kids are mean and that the only thing the rich snobby kids wanted from me was to copy my homework. I do understand having to try very hard to fit in and you just cannot even if for me it was just because my father wasn't some important politician or CEO.
I'm glad we no longer have to worry about that. Kids in college are so much different as a whole.

Well, I could help some of it. I had a bit of a self-defeating attitude when it came to that sort of thing in middle school. And after a certain age there's no excuse for the hair beyond being too lazy to change it!
But you're right, people are a little too quick to judge sometimes. I definitely prefer college to middle school, I can tell you that!

[He writes out "If you keep this up, I'm going to be horribly tempted to ask you out" but has second thoughts and deletes it before sending the message.]

[And it's probably good he didn't send that, because her response would likely be that she's tempted to accept.]

I'm not going to do anything weird!! I guess the snark's back on now.

Well, if you do no one wants to hear of it any more than they wanted to hear that our resident police officer can't get off.

Oh man. That guy gives me so much second hand embarrassment.
