[ One minute, you think these kids, who have been a common sight together over the past three years, hanging out in threes and fours and causing trouble, are just talking about nothing against the lockers, albeit with Skyler with his back against the wall and looking mildly annoyed. The next, Skyler's shoving one away, walking off as they yell at his back. ]

Shit - Skyler, what the hell?

C'mon, asshole, you know we can't do it without you!

[ Skyler can't help but turn around to retort. ] You only asked me because you know I'd do it!

Uh, no shit! That's what friends do. What is your problem, Veracruz? [ His friends (??) trail after him, but don't seem all that willing to follow him wherever he's going. ]

I don't have a problem, I just don't give a shit about you guys anymore! [ Skyler throws up his arms and shrugs, giving a sarcastic halfbow at the end of the gesture. ] Do what you want, I'm out.

No, I don't! [ Skyler taps his head with his knuckles and shakes his head, his words caustic and condescending. Duh. ] Kind of goes with the territory. Go fuck yourselves, I'm done. [ He shoves his hands back into his pockets and spins into a walk down the hall. ]

[ He thinks about it for a second... He thinks he's seen the box in video game shelves when he was over at some of his richer former friends' houses, but video game systems usually went untouched in favor of partying. ]

Well I guess that, reference is completely lost. Uh... D&D is just kind of like, playing a video game, but with your imagination.

So... what's the difference? Besides not having graphics.

Well you can be, more creative with it. So, uh. For my last campaign - game, I mean - my friends and I were trying to sneak around a noble town and we had to avoid getting caught. But, my friend got bored with that? So instead of, following the logical path and being stealthy, he decided he was going to kidnap the countess' daughter and ransom her off to the highest bidder. Except, he forgot that the Bag of Holding actually has a limited air supply, so she sort of, well, suffocated? So then we spent, half the session dodging guards and trying to find a rez for this girl because she was important to the plot. And it's a lot of, really good fun and silliness.

So... You guys were making up a story, but it was a game at the same time. And you can do whatever you want. So... can you win? I mean, if you guys were making it all up as you go...

Pretty much! The dungeon master makes up the story, and the setting, and we do whatever we want in it. The goal is usually to go, level up and save the world. But it can also be just to mess things up and have fun.

[ So it was a bunch of friends going on a pretend adventure together, except with rules? That... sounds fun, oddly enough. Except, you know, it was a bunch of teenagers in a room playing pretend with each other. Once you got past how weird that was, it sounded pretty ok. ]

What if you guys just wanted to mess around forever? Then you'd never win the game.

Eventually the guy in charge will get mad, and either kill us, or force us on the right questline. You never want to piss off the guy that can send, giant dragons after you.

But they're pretend dragons. The whole thing's pretend. Does it matter?
