Strider again.

I'd like to remind all of you going into the Dead District this Sunday that this is a scouting party, not a lynch mob. We should try to capture one of these "werewolves" -- alive. We still don't know if they're animals, people, or something else, and we won't get any answers from it if it's dead.

Even if they're not sentient, we have no proof that they have killed anyone, and I've only treated three bites. Hardly cause to go in guns blazing.

I am willing to lead you through the Dead District -- I know it well, even in the dark -- but do not let yourselves be whipped up into a frenzy and do something you'll regret.

It's good to see you, as well -- this actually alleviates some of the troubling things I was wondering how to tell you.

If I recall correctly, it was you who used the term "scouting party" and "eliminate if necessary".

I don't know how much you know about what's been happening, but several people connected to this network have experienced physical changes, things that up until now have been considered medically impossible. I've offered LSR Clinic as a place for them to get medical care.

[That won't ask questions, treat them like freaks, report them, or try to experiment on them.]

I wasn't sure how to explain to you that there were certain patients I and only I should see, for reasons I could not share.

If you would kindly update yourself on their files, they're in the bottom drawer of the cabinet in the office, under the accordion folder.

Oh, yes, experienced one of those myself. Massively increased metabolism, can't sleep for more than four hours. Need only two to three. Eating a lot more, too. Will check the files soon.

I did not, however, suggest capturing one of the mangy things for a high school biology project.

Really! I'm almost envious -- the strangest thing that's happened to me is a magically appearing plant (that's the one in the window of the waiting room) and a perfect memory of what seems to be an epic poem.

Cut the doublespeak. Were you planning to kill it before or after you understood what it was or why it was biting people?

Examined plant yet? Might have unknown properties. Could provide useful drugs or the like. Can look at it myself if need be.

Do you really think that sort of thing is possible?

[The athelas plant will produce a lovely smell when its leaves are crushed and have an antidepressant effect on anyone who smells it. The leaves are most potent when crushed and placed in water.]

What do you mean, our ability to capture it or it potentially being human?

I can only agree. Not all werewolves in mythology or popular culture are evil. I don't see why these necessarily are.

Though I'm not going to pretend there isn't a likely connection between them and the animal-smelling people at the police station, or the animal possession before that. It may be that they DO need eliminating, but it also may be possible that they can be saved from whatever is doing this to them.

I'm going to be helping by following scent trails. I know what they smell like now. It will be good to see someone level-headed there :)

They're mindless animals, from what I've gathered. There's no point in questioning the bloody beasts or trying to discern their behavior, and the middle of an already precarious operation is not the best time for exercising tools of diplomacy.

It could be diseased, besides. It's too much of a risk to assume.

To capture it alive. Last time we dealt with things that were possessed, the things inside them turned to steam and wrecked what they were possessing.

I don't know. I don't think we should necessarily bring it back to base, but I DO think we ought to fight to restrain, rather than kill.

And while I might not have Captain Mass's armory, I do have tranquilizers.

I think judgement on that is best reserved for when we see them in action.

If anything attacks, I don't think just trying to hold it back is a good idea.

"From what you've gathered." Second- and third-hand reports! No bite I've seen has been fatal, and no one I've spoken to has seen the creatures kill, or found a body.

If they were animals, they'd be attacking to kill, not --

-- that's it, don't you see? That's what they're doing! The werewolves are chasing the homeless out of the Dead District, and only attacking the ones who resist!

Hardly mindless behavior, if you ask me.

Good. Will pickup a few leaves and cuttings when I arrive next time, run some tests.

Oh, also, wanted to ask: coming on the Dead District scouting party?

It's my belief that their goal is to drive the homeless from the Dead District. None of the bites have been fatal, and everyone who came to me for treatment had strong feelings about staying in the DD.

Whatever they are, they're not mindless animals. If killing them is best, I won't argue. I only ask that we DETERMINE whether or not they need to be killed BEFORE we pull the trigger.

I'm uninterested in your debatable leaps in logic and your gross empathy for these... things. If you disagree with my methodology or the way I've structured the operation, you're free to launch your own.

But under my authority, this is how it will be run. Dissent is not tolerated in the military, as you know, and I will not tolerate it here.
