06 | [Open] Please Come Help Kill This Monster

Who: Mort Yokugawa, the monster he accidentally created, and whoever wants to come help him stop the thing.
Where: Various places around town, with the actual fight taking place in a park somewhere.
When: Early evening, October 10.
What: Mort accidentally created a monster and needs help bringing it down. Subthreads for tracking the monster, fighting the monster, and the aftermath inside.
Warnings: Monster-fighting might get messy.

When Mort woke up that morning, he had no way of knowing that today would be the day he'd accidentally manage to create a monster. He still wasn't too sure what had happened; he'd been examining the silver medal that had appeared in his pocket while he was visiting the Towers after showing it to Asuka, a coin slot had appeared on another bit of junk someone had left on his desk earlier that day, the medal had gone into the slot and created a monster somehow, that monster had been standing there before him. It had become quite agitated at all the screaming (Mort could really yell if he had to), trashed Mort's office, and exited through a window, leaving Mort stuck with one very big problem. He hoped others on the network would be able to help him out, because even if he somehow managed to keep track of the thing, he had no way of bringing it down.

((OOC: And this is the promised log portion of Mort's monstrous misadventure, with the call to arms network post here. I am not concerned with tagging order in the least. I'd prefer to keep the actual fight with the monster contained to one thread, and I'll NPC it as necessary. Other than that, go nuts, have fun, and please wait until I get the three subthreads up before tagging.))

The time between the moment of Mordin's arrival on the scene and the moment at which he realizes that the situation has dissolved into absolute chaos is difficult to represent numerically, due to several competing factors which can be roughly summed up as it's really goddamn small. He doesn't even bother pulling out his gun - with a teenager charging at the monster, it's like to do more harm than good.

Instead, he activates his omnitool and waits.

This wasn't good. Xander's subduing tactic wasn't doing much to the creature and was only hurting himself in the process. On top of that, the creature's most recent blast of mist extinguished his flame. He could try again with striking it in the back of the knee, but with this constant movement, he would only miss again.

So, he was left with abandoning his plan and releasing his hold on the creature. His descent left him with several cuts in his skin and clothing, but he could worry about it later.

"Watch out for its cold mist!" He shouted. "It'll only use it if you attack it in close quarters!"

He snaps his fingers again, trying to produce another flame. It was taking longer than usual, but at the same time, he didn't have as much practice with it as his shadow ability.

Several things happened at once for Asuka. The first was an involuntary scream as she realized she was attempting to tackle something covered in spikes and swinging a spiked ball at her face. The second, in the slowed time of an adrenaline rush, was an oncoming headache. Since it was accompanied by deja vu, the small rational part of her remaining prayed it was an echo and not just anticipation of her brain getting crushed.

The little bit of remaining time was spent reflexively covering her face and falling backwards to try and absorb the mace-punch. And it wasn't really enough time to avoid getting her armed solidly smashed into her face and go sprawling back.

The good news is she apparently distracted it, she's on the ground, and she's unconscious so she won't be trying that again.

For the moment, the monster didn't seem as concerned with him or the other guy holding a gun, which Nick was going to take as a good thing.

The man on its back - who Nick recognizes now, and it only figures that it would be Xander - gives up his hold, and Nick doesn't let himself be concerned with who it is at the moment. He has a harder time ignoring the fact that the girl who'd been attacking it is now unconcscious, but it'll be easier to help her when the monster's no longer a threat.

With only one person left engaged with the monster, Nick has a very clear shot, and he takes it, firing his gun a few times at it.

Yeeeep that's pretty much what Ray had been expecting to happen, and now the monster was charging that other guy. It looked like bullets were just pissing it off, but what the hell else were they supposed to do?

Ray distanced himself from the other gunman as much as he could and opened fire, unloading six rounds at the THING and kind of hoping in the back of his mind that it wouldn't decide to turn on him. But you know, whatever happens happens.

Blocking gets rendered unnecessary when Asuka gets knocked out. Speed had clearly not been acquired along with the sword prowess. A thought momentary goes to checking to see if she's alright, but that gets tossed out the instant both the creature seems to target Nick and when Mort runs over to Asuka's side.

Once the barrage of bullets dies down, Richard changes the blocking strategy to one of attacking and rushes forward to deliver several well-aimed slashes at the creature's back. Maybe the close proximity is dangerous, but also necessary. One individual had already gone down; a second would not come so easily on his watch. Perhaps the sudden non-firearm being used in the attack might surprise it, as well.

Nick's not surprised when the monster turns away from the girl to attack him, now that it seems to be aware that the gun is, in fact, something that can hurt him. There's enough other people with weapons that Nick feels confident drawing its attention, hopefully giving them the opportunity to injure it further.

He backs away as the monster charges at him, trying to stay ahead of it while also keeping it distracted, and waiting until the other man had finished shooting before firing at it again. That was - partially intentional, to keep it confused as to who to go after and give Richard the chance to go at it with a sword, and partially because he's temporarily distracted by the familiar heartbeat sensation of another pulse.

For the moment, he forces himself to ignore it, and fire another shot at the monster.

While Nick, Ray and Richard distracts the monster, Xander was trying to gauge the situation and keep out of the way. He didn't have a physical weapon to attack with and using his flame on the grass to trap the monster would put everyone at risk. On top of that, his previous attempt caused him to echo back something, but he wasn't sure what. He could worry about it later when this monster was dealt with.

A rather morbid idea came to mind. He could break apart his replacement lighter (which was rather cheap and made of plastic) and use the fluid with his flame to burn its face. But the problem with this plan was that he would need to get quite personal with it again. There was also a risk of him getting burned and hit with a bullet if he went through with this. Followed by yelling and several lectures about his recklessness, but he pushes those thoughts of doubt from his mind.

He disappears in to the shadows again and makes his way towards the creature, while avoiding getting trampled on. He was set on climbing up it again, but with Richard's attacks, he needed to approach it from a different side. It didn't help that he needs to be quick about it, incase the monster decides on emitting more mist and hindering his progress.

Even if his aim was pretty good, Ray didn't like the idea of shooting at the thing when there was someone so close to it. However, the stupid thing had left itself wide open by flailing it's mace-fist around like an idiot. Seeing as just pumping the thing full of bullets at random didn't seem to be helping, Ray aimed for it's shoulder area in an attempt to at least disable it's weird mace attack arm... thing. Maybe it would give mister sword guy a better chance at stabbing it to death or something.

Well, operation 'keep the thing distracted so it doesn't focus for too long on one person' seems to be working, more or less, and the monster also seems to be injured.

Unfortunately, Nick's also out of ammo, and wishing he had a second weapon. He's always relied on hand to hand combat first, and his gun as back up, but now he's starting to wonder if maybe he shouldn't be exploring alternatives. Of course, that doesn't exactly help him at the moment, but - with the monster focusing his attention on Richard and the other gunman, Nick takes a moment to reload his gun.

And then goes back to carefully taking aim at the monster, this time shooting for the same arm that the other gunman'd shot at.

That mace-like fist proves troublesome. It may not have hit Richard completely thanks to quick blocking, but it manages to graze his arm. A minor injury like that gets paid little mind to. A few quick jumps backward follow to allow for not only some distance between the creature and himself but for the shooters to get proper aim.

As soon as the focus shifts once again, Richard takes the chance to launch another attack. This time, he pushes himself forward with as much strength as possible. The sword is held straight ahead, if pulled back. Then, once within distance and using as much strength as possible, the sword gets thrust forward with the intent of piercing that already injured shoulder. It's a risky gamble, but a necessary one. Disabling one arm would make defeating it easier.

With the creature distracted again, Xander sees a moment of opportunity and partially emerges from the shadow on the creature. He didn't trust himself to be half-way between states, but moves quickly to do what he planned.

He splashes the creature's face with the lighter fluid, aiming for the eyes and mouth and quickly snaps the fingers of his right hand. It takes quite a few snaps before a flame appears and he applies it to the liquid, making sure it caught ablaze.

Toushirou isn't exactly sure what he can do at this point. He doesn't have his weapon, and there are bullets flying about. While he might be fast enough to dodge anything that isn't aimed right, he really has no reason to be in so close without his sword.

And seeing the thing use ice abilities makes him hesitant to try his own. Would they even work, or would it just shrug them off? Maybe it's better for him to stay out of it for the moment.

But he can at least get himself in front of the overprotective old guy and the knocked-out annoying girl in case they need a defense or something. And he'll get in front of them with a small burst of that speed ability he'd acquired in the mines; for all intents and purposes, it looks like he's teleported into that position.

Ray was only down to a few bullets, and because he was clearly brilliant, hadn't thought to bring another clip. Ah well. He'd reserve the last couple rounds JUST IN CASE, since it looked like sword guy and other guy guy seemed to have everything under control.

Oh yeah, and now the monster's face was on fire or something.

Yeeeaaaaah, Ray was going to take this chance to move around the critter and try to get another angle on it.

Toushirou barely spares a glance back.

"If something gets fired in this direction, you're useless. I'm not."

That's really all there is to it. Can't the guy at least be happy he's not charging the monster? Honestly.

The noise and being within very close proximity of the monster with it's face on fire was a bad thing for Xander. The monster wasn't exactly pleased with the group's attacks and he tries to block any swats that the monster unintentionally threw at him. His right hand still had a flame on his fingers and it hurt a considerable amount, he would need to put it out soon.

Just as he's considering grabbing that flailing arm to extinguish his flame, he's hit with several weaker waves of mist. That was a good sign to retreat and he's done his part of assisting. He moves back in to the shadow he came from, climbing down and leaving from a side that wouldn't get him caught in the cross-fire.
