[The page is covered with notes on the roses she has been tending – measurements of growth, records of infections and fungus attacks, times of watering – everything that might be useful to the next generation of plants. Rita reaches over and scrawls the number at the bottom of the page, and then watches in disbelief as half the notes disappear beneath a wall of text.

She reads carefully over as many of the old posts as she can, following the links to the FAQ. As she reads, she mutters out loud to herself.]

This is so weird. It seems so impossible, and yet it’s happening. I’m sure it is happening. I haven’t gone mad, though the world might have. And the roses. How do I explain them? Why do they feel so familiar?

[She realizes that this is being transmitted.]

Well that’s awkward. My apologies to anyone who runs across this. I didn't realize how, ah, flexible the system was. And if you are listening, then I suppose I should say nice to meet you.

From the network posts I've read, I think it would be positively tame.

Those plants look very sneaky indeed. Although I don't know that plants would be a very useful network of spies. Not the ones in my greenhouses, anyway. Small animals would be better, rats or mice.

But they have such a rooted network~

Though I guess climbing plants would have an advantage. A wall of ivy could listen at every window at once.

And see everything. And no one would ever expect the flowers! I'm sure you could get quite a lot of blackmail information from flower shops~

An excellent point.

These plants are sounding more and more like the weapons of the Spanish Inquisition. Along with the dreaded ~comfy chairs~.

Here's just hoping they don't an almost fanatical devotion to the pope!

I suspect I am not male enough to make that work. Though maybe I could wear a fake moustache...

Hey, if you aren't in bloom, you don't have a gender, right?

I hadn't thought about that, but you're right. Plants might not be able to distinguish human genders at all.

Actually, this conversation has kind of made me wish that my plants could talk. It would be interesting, to know how they see the world.

Wouldn't it?

Maybe it will happen. We have a guy who can talk to fish. Or who's crazy, depending.

At this point we're all crazy, or none of us are. And I don't know which would be worse. I'm managing to keep myself sensible by not thinking about anything, but I don't know how long that will last.

Least you have a built in group of people who know what you're going through because we're all in the same boat.

And considering one of my buddies is basically turning into a zombie and other people can tell that he is... my vote is that none of us are.

Fish guy sounds like he's taken one too many knocks to the head though. [[Because knocking on Arthur never gets old. Mostly because he takes it so well...]]

That sounds pretty traumatic. Your poor friend. It must be difficult for him to manage, especially if he can't go outside.

Have you had any trouble yourself?

He's not that bad off yet, thankfully. Though I think half the network is going to go nocturnal soon.

And nah, no turning into anything weird yet over here. Just annoying memories and an awesome monster summon.

It's difficult, isn't it? The more I hear, the more I realize how hard it is for us not to give ourselves away. As it is I've been working non-stop to get these roses out of the University greenhouses and back to my house. At least there they can't reveal our secrets.

A monster summon? What does that involve?

Can't just say you were experimenting with dyes with them?

And it involves over dramatic shouting and a 20 foot tall monster~

I can keep the natural looking ones, but there is no way I can explain blue roses. They're in violation of several biological facts for a start.

Besides, the roses are strange. I don't think I want people I don't know around them.

My goodness. That sounds very strange. But potentially very useful too.

He's not solid yet, so the useful part's pretty debatable! But he's pretty amazing, and once I have enough baa, I'm pretty sure he'll be solid again. Can't wait!

I'm glad that all of this has given you something enjoyable. It seems to make the whole situation better, somehow.

It's actually not so bad most of the time. Just every now and then it sucks.

I guess that's kind of comforting. Though I think I'm in need of a dose of normality soon. I'll have to go and do something very boring. Start filing my taxes, maybe.

There has to be better things that that.

I could shelve my books by year, genre and number of prizes won. I could re-pot all my plants. I could plan out my lecture courses for the next two years.
