Where: Bakura's back yard.



The Bakura home was an older house in the older part of the city that had been kept up quite well, a pair of well tended flowerbeds flanking the porch steps. But it was the gate off the driveway that the partygoers had been directed to, leading to a fenced in backyard that was half taken up by a large deck and in ground pool.

There's a UFO grill set up, as well as a small stereo [that's really just Bakura's ipod plugged into a set of speakers] that's playing an odd assortment of pop, jpop, anime soundtracks and Jonathan Coulton. There's also three different things of sunscreen and three pictures of water, lemonade and ice tea set up on a small table, as well as various snacks.

"I see grandma got to you~" Bakura grinned, walking over with a plate of his own, piled rather high. The main difference was that Bakura was very sure he was going to easily be able to finish all of it, even with the earlier snacking.

[He's honestly not sure where to start with all this stuff. Sure, there's nothing there that he doesn't like; there's just . . . so much of it.]

This must be a thing with old people.

[[And out comes the napkin out of seemingly nowhere to be tucked under the edges of the towel that was being weighed down by his soaking wet hair before he digs into his own plate, somehow managing to eat both neatly, and with enthusiasm.]]

Most of the time, yeah. [Growing boys need their food, right? No matter how slowly they may be growing.]

I think it's just a mother thing. Mom used to do it too, and she's from a different side of the family, so I know she didn't get it from grandma.

[Might as well start with the snack foods, seeing as they're kind of burying the burger anyway.

[He won't bother bringing up how he wouldn't know if it's a mom thing or not. They don't need to talk about dead parents again.] Maybe it is.

Kinda funny. When she suggested this, I don't think she expected I'd say yes to it. She was going to invite some of her friends from yoga as backup if I didn't have anyone to invite over, like she did last year. But when I said there were people she just got so happy...

[He may not eat as enthusiastically, but it's definitely with a healthy appetite.

[Granny had been pretty happy too, when he'd mentioned this to her. He's never been very good at making friends, so mentioning he had a place to go for the holiday? That had perked her right up. Hey, she'd needed that after how he'd scared her, right?] Huh. Granny started doing that not too long ago, too.

Something good to balance all the crazy shit, eh? Giving us antisocial assholes a reason to actually hang out with people.

[[have a potato chip flying at you, Toushirou.]] What do you mean "you guess" c'mon here. [[a small laugh]]

[Yeah, that hits him in the shoulder. But it's not like he tried to dodge it anyway. It's just a stupid potato chip. He is, however, mildly scowly as usual.]

Well, what else am I supposed to say? [Seriously. He does. Not. Know.]

Whatever. Would have thought you'd thaw out a little, between the party and the sun. But guess you're just bad at this whole being a person stuff, huh?

[You're asking him to be expressive or something. That's not something he can do on command and have it be real.]

Let's just say I'm not all that expressive and leave it at that. [Faintly annoyed, here. Geez, when would people stop getting on his case for this?]

"Fine fine~" Bakura grinned, glancing over as his grandmother approached with a fresh lemonade pitcher.

"You boys fighting?" she asked with a smile, topping off their glasses.

"Nah, Toushirou's just too serious for his own good, that's all," Bakura smiled, leaning back in his chair with his glass.

[Oh. Old person alert. Time to dial down the attitude. And while he doesn't feel particularly in need of having his glass topped off, he'll let her do it without protest. No harm in that, right?]

"Toushirou-kun, hmmm... Vivi's grandson?" the elder Bakura mused, tapping on her chin with her free hand.

[He doesn't know much Japanese, but he does know some of the endearments. He'd have protested this one, but . . . yeah. Old lady. No making a fuss.

[There is, however, some blinking. Hang on, here.] ... Yeah.

Bakura blinked a few times, shifting to look up at his grandmother a bit more. "Vivi... the one you've been helping out in yoga class?"

The woman smiled warmly. "Yes! Despite it being such a city, it really is pretty small, isn't it?" Her accent was still a touch noticeable, especially with the slight off phrasing.

[Small city, indeed. Holy crap. Their grandparents know each other?] Seems like it is.

"Well. I won't be a bother, you boys enjoy yourselves and tell Vivi that I said hello!" Bakura's grandmother smiled, reaching out to gently ruffle Toushirou's hair before heading off to the next glass in need to more lemonaid.

[He visibly stiffens at the hair ruffling. Ordinarily, he would have swatted at the hand of anyone who did that and maybe snapped at them to quit it. Not here. Nope, he'll let her get away with it.] Yeah, I'll do that.

[She's gone, right? He can relax now, right? Right.]

[[Covers a snicker]] Anyone other than Grandma doing that and you would have flipped a shit.

And I swear, she knows everyone. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not somedays!
