[Julien accidentally left a little lined notebook open in the clinic, with most of his number on the inside cover, missing only the last digit. It's not full of poems about Strider, but uh... there are a bunch that look like they apply to him. Also he copied down the poem from the letter and wrote "Outsiders? Robert Frost? Obviously a Smash Mouth fan" in the margins. Also, "No tattoos" was written under that and circled.]
[It does not appear that he actually meant for this to be read as a whole. There are grocery lists and little maps and doodles of wings, his niece, interlocking horseshoes, and Colette; there's a smudged sketch of The King with the caption "King. Hell? lost souls?". The poems are messy, they have messier drafts everywhere, he's got a heavily scribbled out page that appears to be about college debt...]
[Well they apply to other things and people too, he doesn't like to write really direct stuff. There are some drafts of this, with margins involving rhymes and a dislike thereof. The final version, while it's written fairly neatly, has one big X through the text, leaving it still legible:]
To the Sea
I am a rill besides a great river
His waters run deep and slow and silver
In a mile I am born and sink back into earth
Twenty times that wouldn't diminish his girth
I dance and froth over each little stone
The rocks of his bed no man knows
I will never reach the sea on my own
He has been there - look at his course, it shows
If I divert my course and join with the river
Will I be swallowed?
If I make his surface shiver
Joined or not, will I be here tomorrow?
[A couple lines beneath that: "creepy."]
[This one seems to have been dashed off quickly with no other drafts:]
I Hate Coming Up With Titles
if cold hands hide a warm heart
and all Hallmark's writings suggest this is true
who am I to argue my elders?
so then it is agreed
the seeming is not the substance
gold is covered by dross
sizzle is not steak (no matter what the menu says)
one can be good who does not look it
or believe it.
[yeah there are more but I'm kind of lazy, so just one other.]
[Looks like this one is his favorite! There's a version neatly copied in pen and torn out, but left in the little notebook like a bookmark. Earlier drafts are less abstracted and have lines like "It's not what you wanted / but it looks good to me" and sometimes glasses in the margins:]
A Barren Tree
a tree on the plain braces the sky
grasses were a sea around it, now
the sea is concrete and metal and cars fleeting past
where it was adorned by peregrinators now rest pigeons, and sparrows
and shoes
and at the tail of fall a traveler comes to watch dried leaves settle
and says, the winter will be hard
this tree is old
maybe this is the last time
who am I to argue my elders? Well
I am light and gold-eyed still and I see
winter will be hard
this tree is old and looks it
but it's a good tree
maybe this is not the last time
there is life in winter's little death
the leaves have died but the bore lives yet
and will go on for this winter, and winters yet to come.
it will rest and be reborn time and time again
maybe it isn't what it was, but
it's still good.
and if I'm wrong, well
come traveler with me in the spring
we will watch birds build nests in dead branches.

Probably the reason bananas go bad so quickly, really. lol.
Though if it's the book with him in it there's probably doodles of a pretty girl too, huh?

Huh, maybe. I feel bad for the bananas.
... Oh yes!! Is that your niece? She's adorable!

Yeah pretty much anything he has dominion over is not going to be good.
Val's in there, yeah! I'm not much good at drawing kids. I mean without making them look like they're from an anime.

I think it's cute.
