vermini encounters
Who: Characters picked for encounters with Vermini and anyone accompanying them
What: There are swarms of Vermini in Las Vegas - some have infested and altered animals, and others are simple swarms.
Where: Las Vegas
When: Any time between May 19th and June 4th
[ The Vermini clusters are most commonly spotted near water and large patches of grass, but they have begun spreading out, seemingly on the prowl. As always, non-reincarnates overlook Vermini. These groups of Vermini do not immediately flee when they near a reincarnate, but they are not aggressive until attacked.
As a refresher course: Vermini infested animals appear as real animals with suspiciously humanoid features: birds with teeth, dogs with thumbs, fish with hair, and so on and so forth. If an infested animal is captured, the Vermini will abandon the animal and attempt to flee, turning the animal back to normal. This happens even if the animal has died. Vermini turn into steam when destroyed, and chirp, but do not speak. ]

May 23rd; Lily, with Winter accompanying
...that didn't mean she wasn't going to say no to the added opportunity to drag certain people along with her on occasion. Not that they really needed the incentive, but after so much focus on chasing dead ends half the time, and trying to keep a handle on prescribed schoolwork that she was still expected to cover while she was away, any excuse was a good one on that.
Even if it was just for a walk to clear her head.
...and even if it did end in her trying to bribe Winter with ice cream anyhow. Perhaps unnecessary, but she had felt like it all the same.
Regardless, it's still dangerous, and it seems to suddenly be growing even more so. So, as they walk along the strip, Lily still keeps an eye out for any particular little critters that only they would understand enough to notice. Even as she at least tries to keep the conversation at least relatively light; Lord knows they need it. "So, I've been trying to think of what to get Jasmine for her birthday. It's kind of terrible I haven't figured out what yet, I know..."
no subject
"Well... what kind of things does she like? I don't really know enough to do more than guess," she offers lamely. All of Winter's suggestions would end in the kinds of things she likes, and she knows enough to understand that Jasmine's likes will not match her own. "If I had to, though... maybe a bracelet or something? Something small, but meaningful?"
She shrugs. The two of them were almost certainly on the same wavelength for each other, just not for someone else.
no subject
She looks back ahead of herself and chuckles a bit darkly. "I sort of wanted to find a way to bake her a cake. I promised I wouldn't again after... well, that incident when we were kids. But maybe she'd appreciate it now... I wond-"
She stops abruptly. Both mid-sentence, and in step. Upon glancing around the side of one building, she thought she saw... something out of the corner of her eye. Something strange enough that she had to stop just to zero in on it, and that alone is cause for a hand to fall to her purse, wherein her transformation device and Precure Seed rests.
"Winter." The name of the other young woman comes out sharp and urgently, as if to say, 'do you see what I see' but without even thinking about it she is instinctively banking on that wavelength being similar enough for her to follow without much else.
no subject
As Lily stops, Winter brings herself to rest half a step later, shutting up immediately. She doesn't catch what Lily sees, but the emphasis on her name is enough to get her attention, and she gives Raquel a sharp look. She was hoping not to have to worry about things today, but... it seems like that's how the chips fell.
"What did you see?" It's quite a bit more serious.
no subject
She looks... more than a little disturbed.
"I just... saw a dog."
A beat.
"Walking on two legs."
A dry gulp, and she glances back at Winter.
"Sort of, kind of... human-like legs."
no subject
Then she sees it poke its head out again, and she immediately goes silent. Out of fear, of all things - she'd been too new to be involved the first time, and now she's absolutely unsure how to react. This thing is more clearly not natural than almost anything else they've done - the snake statues, the vermedi, all of those were something more grounded than this. But this thing shouldn't exist. And it scares her to her core. Enough that, even as Raquel turns into her Commune, she can't react. She can't wrap her hand around it and do something. She's frozen.
Frozen is exactly the wrong thing to be right now. Her instincts communicate that clearly, but it's not enough to get her moving, and that's a problem. One that looks inclined to bolt toward her at the slightest provocation-
Her breath hitches. "L-Lily...!" It comes out at a squeak, and the beast's head perks up further, looking right at her. She goes perfectly still, and says nothing more, shivering just a little.
no subject
She keeps her attention divided as evenly as possible between the creature now narrowing its focus upon Winter, and Winter herself. She understands the feeling. She's feeling it right then and there, but... She tries her best to focus. To keep herself steady. Hearing her voice come out like that, seeing her shake... she realizes that if Winter is showing that much fear, she can't afford to.
Once more, Lily's vast practice at hiding her emotions comes to her advantage. In a way she hates it, but she'll damn well use it where she can.
"We're not going to have much of a choice here," Lily murmurs just loud enough for Winter to hear, but she speaks evenly enough. "If that thing wanders off, someone else could get hurt, and if we lose track of it before the police get here, nothing can be done until its too late..."
The infested dog snaps a look to her, briefly, but its focus seems to narrow in on Winter. Assuredly it can smell Lily's fear too, but it can see Winter's. There's enough people around that once it moves this has the chance of becoming very public, even if no one else has caught a glimpse of it yet...
...and then of course, it does move, its longer human-like leg length carrying it quickly in their direction.
"Winter, transform!" Lily shouts, but even she hesitates for a moment. She almost fumbles her device. But with a click and a flash, Cure Moonlight appears in her place - and slides into position in front of Winter, almost instinctively.
no subject
She can't move. She can't react. Even Raquel's voice trying to get her attention doesn't pierce the shock. Lily's voice gets to her, a moment too slowly, and as she tries to bring her hands around to work the transformation device that's screaming in her ear, she knows she's not going to make it. Her legs aren't moving, her lips are too dry to speak the words, her hands are shaking. Nothing is working right, and it's going to cost them. It's going to cost her.
With agonizing slowness - she drops the Loveads, a twitch reaction catching it a few inches later - she slams everything into place, and she stutters her way through her transformation, the light clearing from her eyes as it's already too late, and the thing's right there, and she doesn't even have the time to reach a hand out, let alone to move - or to drag or push Lily aside. Cure Diamond is completely blindsided, and that means Moonlight's on her own. Worse, it means Moonlight's going to have to protect deadweight for a minute or two while Winter gets her act together. Because whatever she thinks she's doing, this is not what she's supposed to be doing.
no subject
Those instincts also tell her to lash out, that she had the power to end this within a second. While true, she doesn't want to kill it. This poor creature is just as innocent as either of them - it's the Vermini inside that's pushing it to do this.
So she doesn't listen to those instincts at all.
This is probably the mistake that costs her.
Because Diamond isn't moving, neither does Moonlight. Her right arm goes up to block, but this is very quickly discovered to also be a mistake. Hot, searing pain suddenly meets her, and she discovers something very important - their transformed states could protect them very, very well from blunt instruments of destruction. Blasts of power, drops from great distances, being knocked through walls, stone snakes.
Something very sharp, like a claw? Can and does tear through the long glove on her right arm. Perhaps it doesn't cut her as deeply as it may have been normally, as there's still some resistance. But it does cut her severely enough that there is very quickly blood trickling down the rest of that purple glove's length, and her arm.
She pulls back a step in the next half second, but... dogs in attack act quick. Quicker than most humans think, and in pushing those instincts away that's all Lily's left with - thinking, and realizing she doesn't have the experience to truly know what to do in the heat of the moment. She's only ever done what she's felt. A flash of remembrance comes to her, Winter telling her not to over think, to just let her emotions go - and a realization that she may have had her power and skill, but she had none of Yuri's true experience...
There's a dozen different ways, she realizes in an instant, that she could have done this differently. Ways she could have dispatched this monster - saved it, too - and protected Winter. However, it's a little too late to realize all of that.
She's already made enough mistakes, which she pays for in the next moment, when the dog monster's fangs suddenly clamp down on her shoulder. Once again there is a limited resistance before the force of the beast's jaws and its teeth tear through her clothing, and then dig into her flesh. Dig in, and not let go.
Even as Moonlight stands there, eyes widened in horror, feeling more pain than she ever had in her entire life... she can't bring herself to scream. Her voice only comes out as an uneven whisper. "W- Winter... get a-away...!"

May 27th
Not so much today. Really, it's his own fault for deciding to cut through an alley. Because right as he makes his way to the end and rounds a corner, bam. Group of Vermini, right in front of his face.
Claire would be acting calm about this, but having them right in his face like that surprises him enough to send a brief surge of panic through him. Instinct takes over and... well... If you've ever seen a cat jump like ten feet into the air because something spooked them, it's kind of like that. One minute he's on the ground, the next he's hanging from a fire escape.
Upside down. Hanging only by his legs.
Huh. Isn't that something.
...
How the hell is he supposed to get down now? Ah crap.
Definitely not the best situation to be in. He... probably could use some help. Because if he drops now, he might break something and that just won't do. Okay, uh. Oh! His phone, yes, right. He'll just carefully reach into his pocket and grab his phone, praying that he won't drop it, all the while keeping an eye on the Vermini swarm. He only looks away to go into his contacts.
Who should he contact, though? Hm...
>Alex Mercure
...Sure. That'll do.
Please pick up, please pick up...]
VOICE
Claire. What is it? Why are you calling? Are you calling to check up on me? Cos I'm fine. Completely fine. Completely — AAAH!
[ There's a sort of scuffling noise for several moments....
... ]
Er, right. I just... I thought Flopsy was looking at me a little funny and I just — it's okay, I'm fine. She's fine. Anyway, what is it?
VOICE
Ah, no, that's not exactly why I'm calling... But that's good, that you're fine.
[This is going to be very awkward. Well, things are usually at least a little bit awkward between them, but this time especially so.]
So, uh. Before you say anything, I want you to remember my absolutely selfless offer of help earlier. Just keep that in mind, alright?
Because I'm... slightly less than fine myself right now.
[The blood's rushing to his head and that swarm is still much too close for him to feel comfortable, so that may be an understatement.]
VOICE
[ His agitation flips over into irritation. ]
I knew there'd be strings attached. Well? What's the matter, what do you want, I don't have all day!
VOICE
[That's not to say he's above taking advantage of the fact that Alex kind of owes him.]
Well, see, I'm, uh. Stuck. On a fire escape.
[He sounds less concerned and more sheepish about this fact.]
Or more specifically I'm hanging from one and I can't get down.
VOICE
And you're calling me?
[ He's frankly amazed by this. Why would anyone call him for help? Why —
Ah. He pales. ]
This is something to do with those things, is it?
[ He's about to suggest calling the fire department, but suspects Claire doesn't want to end up as a news story. "Fire department rescues not only cats but local magicians." Or else.... ]
Or did.... did someone try to... to kill you?
[ His voice is shaky. The recent murders are still fresh in his mind. ]
VOICE
...That I know of.
[Claire sure has a way of sounding extremely nonchalant about the possibility of anyone wanting to kill him.]
But, yeah, there's a... like a swarm of those things. Er, Vermini, I mean. And I might not know a whole lot about them, but I know it can't be good.
VOICE
Where are you?
[ ....not to mention, terrifying! ]

May 26; Russel/Jasmine/Jonas
Today, he was out with Jasmine at Mandalay Bay, a walkthrough of the hotel and aquarium to see if they could find anything worth noting. Vermini gathered near water so it was a good place to keep an eye on. He had his keyboard with him, slung across his back; he'd stopped carrying the piano anywhere as soon as Angeline's murder had come to light. Carrying around a keyboard just made him look like a busker in between sessions; a solid gold piano was significantly more conspicuous and thus more dangerous.
His topic of choice while they walked was--what else?--music. "Anyway I'm trying to teach myself some Beethoven right now and I never really appreciated how genius he was until I had to--does that fish have legs?" He stopped suddenly, staring past Jasmine into the tank on his left.
There was, indeed, a swordfish with some very shapely legs watching them intently through the glass. When Russel noticed it, it tapped against the glass like it was the curious onlooker provoking the creatures on the other side.
no subject
So, she was a bit distracted when Russell was focusing on the swordfish, staring off into nothing in particular.
no subject
And investigate he does. Jonas calls in sick to work, because "sexy fish" is weird enough to remind him of all the suspicious murders that have been happening lately, and while he really really really doesn't want to get involved, he also really really really doesn't want to end up as the next murder victim. So he buys himself a little notebook and a pen from the hotel's gift shop and camps out around the aquarium, searching for the Sexy Fish.
He doesn’t find it until he sees two others examining it. Which is strange. The slightest irregularity with the fish is usually noticed pretty damn fast and typically draws a crowd or two. This hasn’t. Even with the two pointing it out, no one else is gathering to look.
Before he can really think about it, JoJo’s approaching the two—
“Woah, hey, yo,” Jonas eyes the fish warily before continuing, “’sup? I mean, like... Sexy fish ’sup. As in, what the heck’s up with that fish?” He’s a whirlwind of jitters and aborted attempts at communicative hand gestures.
“I just—sorry, if I’m bothering you, yeah? Just kinda—“ WONDERING IF THIS IS SOMEHOW CONNECTED TO A STRING OF RECENT MURDERS—“—you guys know what’s goin’ on here?”
The fish seems pretty fascinated with all of JoJo’s movements. He notices this, pauses, and then just starts nervously fiddling with his earrings while staring at the fish. This is the world’s most awkward first impression.
no subject
But before he could ask if she was okay (he could fathom a guess as to why she wouldn't be), he was interrupted by Jonas's awkward interjection. Russel flashed him a quizzical look, because let's be real--'sexy fish sup'? Who fucking says that? But the quizzical look at Jonas turned quickly back to the fish.
Sexy? Really?
Well, okay, maybe those legs were a little--
Oh my god. Please don't let that feeling be what he thinks it is.
Russel brought a hand quickly to his nose and--yup, there it was, that trickle of blood that was just going to be his life now apparently. "Augh!!" Keeping a hand over his nose, he spun on Jonas. "What's the matter with you?! What kind of person just runs up to someone and points out a fish's sexy legs?!"
no subject
Jasmine spun around, and... caught an earful of the scene. Her eyes widened as she focused on the swordfish and just... grit her teeth. There were the shenanigans in front of them, but she was more focused on the fact that she was now staring at the exact kind of creature that had hurt her sister.
"Russell! Get the hell away from the glass...!"
no subject
JoJo's in the middle of offering Russel a packet of portable tissues ("Hey, man, I just call 'em like I see 'em.") when Jasmine's shout catches his attention. He startles, portable tissue pack papping Russel in the face as JoJo backs his mighty ass up and away from the glass immediately. For a guy who's six foot stupid, he's like a scared chihuahua about to piss everywhere in fear.
"Wh-- Why? What's wrong with it? Is it dangerous? Is it alien? Is this what's been murdering people?!" The fish kicks against the glass with an attractive and stylish heel, no doubt scuffing its flawless aquarium shine. Meanwhile, Jonas reveals himself to be Numbered, because 1) no one in the media has connected the murders to each other, 2) no one besides Numbered really gives a fuck about all the murders, and 3) aliens.
no subject
Grumbling, he knelt to retrieve the tissues and quickly backed himself away from the glass too while he pulled one out of the pack and set to wiping away the blood. He wanted to say something to Jasmine, that it was behind thick aquarium glass and there probably wasn't anything to worry about, but given that he knew why she was freaking out, it felt too dismissive to actually say.
Instead, he focused on Jonas's questions. "I don't think it's what's been murdering people, but it's definitely possessed by aliens."
