Entry #A-7: "Artisan" [Text, Action]

[There is a lot going on right now. Murders in Vegas, police trials staggering to shameful conclusions, and L's own latest case- which he's technically no longer supposed to be investigating, but is- are all very distracting.

It's not like he needs sleep or anything, though; the coffee shop's construction is right on schedule. It just finished, in fact. As promised, he's taking a break from perusing Greek newspapers to make an announcement... and to remind the people who said they'd help a couple weeks ago about their commitment.]

Construction's done on the coffee shop and these are the open temporary positions I need filled immediately. Movers: Basically just move objects from point A to point B. Some of them are heavy. Painters: Solid colors and also a mural. Promoters: Hang out at Urban Outfitters and craft bars to hand out posters and spread the word. These are the permanent positions I'm taking interviews for starting this evening. Experience is a plus, but not necessary unless otherwise noted. Manager: Experience required. Job entails scheduling workers and running the shop. Assistant Managers: Hiring two. Need to be equally comfortable behind the counter and dealing with paperwork. Baristas: Hiring up to 8 for now. Duties include making coffee and food, running the cash register, and keeping the bathroom really clean. Bartenders: Hiring up to three. Must be over 21; we have a full bar that opens at 2:00 each day. Vendors: Sell your handcrafted items and help us support our boarded employees. A fantastic accountant: Lots of experience mandatory A fantastic lawyer: See above. Numbered individuals get priority, obviously. As I mentioned before, if your living situation is complicated, there is an apartment upstairs with six cots, two showers, and lockers for personal belongings. Just mention it during your interview and we can put you up as soon as the cots are upstairs. Respond here or drop by in person. I'll be at the shop all day today, and... honestly for the next week I'll be there almost constantly.

[And, in fact, he will. He's been neglecting his sleep, though, so when you stop by the newly constructed Espresso Yourself, you're likely to find him dozing on the lone sofa in the empty expanse of the shop, practically buried in paperwork.]

What good is anything if we think any of it happens for a reason? Honestly, it's a distinct possibility that everything happening is pretty random, with no higher purpose or direction. As disturbing as that is to consider... I think it's more likely, and that the best we can do is merely that.

In my case, it's opening a coffee shop and offering beds, meals, showers and jobs to anyone who's fallen on harder than average times.

[He seems anemically encouraged by her assertion that she likes the theme, but he comes up short when she asks, in more detail, what he thinks he wants.]

Make sketches if you think it'd help you, but... I really don't know anything about art. But I liked what you came up with from your echo, if that helps.

Oh. Well. If you're sure. I just figured I'd offer but if you don't mind too much, I could just do something similar to my echo then.

[It'd save time, and to be honest, she already has some idea on what she wants to do, leaning down and opening the paints, gathering her brushes and deciding which ones to use. Blue.]

[She's sure if she gets too distracted with this he would let her know. But so long as he remains over at that desk she should be fine. There's a scraping as she shifts a chair over to the wall. Using it to stand on and reach up higher.

Solana basically half pours some blue paint at the wall, smearing it around with a thick brush to begin. Blue is a better, brighter colour than to use black, even if black is the usual colour for conveying the night sky. Even now as she starts, it's evident why she dresses in older clothes. T-shirt and coveralls and sneakers getting fresh blue paint added to the older paint, some at her cheek.]

I can be quite patient if I know you're trying--that's all I ask of anyone.

[And there's a hint of a smile in his voice even though parrots can't really smile.]

So long as no one repeatedly offers me crackers, we should be quite all right.

I want to be able to do more...

It's possible that you'll be able to, someday. Hell, tomorrow you might echo back godlike abilities. For now... it's enough to help me out with the posters, in all seriousness. Thank you.

One thing about me, JoJo, is that if I don't want to talk about something, I don't talk. You weren't out of line.

[ At L's comment, Alexi's mind goes back to some of his recent echoes. They had called him "savior" back then and he had saved that guy in his heart. Maybe really can do something once he gets more things back. Maybe he can heal things like this.

But for now, he was supposed to be helping here. ]

Oh right, the posters. Where should I go to hand them out?

[He slips his hands into his pockets. For all his surreptitious scouting for doctors and healers, he has cultivated a lot of techniques for keeping his scars out of view, even if people are aware of them. It just seems simpler, that way. Out of sight. Out of mind.]

Our target demographic is hipsters, so... Urban Outfitters is a good place. So is American Apparel. Starbucks, for the wayward who need their fix but would rather patronize a locally owned business. The bus station, the farmer's market and organic foods store, the announcements bulletin at the park. I'm sure you can think of other places, as well...

It's clear. You can handle complex, and that much is more than apparent from your design work. As jobs go, I think you'll find this one relatively easy.

[Ultimately, he's just relieved to have a barista.]

[ He nods, making no further attempts to follow L's hand movements. ]

I think I have the basic idea now.

Nah, I don't get depressed. Maybe I'll open up a little more, but that's about it.

Still, I could always use another drinking buddy. Fuck knows I drink more now that I'm a Numbered.

Can I take that to mean that being numbered has made your life significantly more difficult?

Not exactly. Just don't like the fact and drink to attempt to forget that I'm suddenly 'a superhero'.

A lot of people don't like it, which surprises me. In some cases, maybe it isn't so strange, but... having powers means having more options, in so many ways. I'm honestly kind of jealous of people who are echoing back those types of abilities.

[And really, no one would question that he would be, with his curved spine and crooked hands. He stands a ghost of a chance against a catastrophe like Wise Snake.]

[L is heartened that she seems to know what she's doing, because he certainly doesn't.]

You have complete creative control over the project. Please let me know if there's anything you need; there's coffee and coke, so please help yourself if you get thirsty.

[After opening the windows, he returns to his desk and pulls his knees to his chest, hugging them as he watches her begin the mural, deciding that it's probably very good and returning his eyes to his work until she speaks to him, or reaches a point where she can cease painting for the day.

[Solana grins down at him, smearing some paint at her cheek more when she brushes her arm against it to give him a thumbs up. She's initially a bit nervous, but when he seems content to just sit back and watch, she almost forgets he is there, so focused on the painting. Making sure it doesn't drip to the ground. Adding the shading and details of the stars with her smallest brush. The lanterns floating up in the sky above the trees. Above a lake, showing their reflections. Lining the lanterns with a brighter yellow.

She's there a while. Finishing the sky at the least before she climbs down from the chair to look at it, smearing paint at her forehead as she wipes it with a grin.]

Not too bad so far. Reckon I could go for a drink now.

Well. Hopefully. I mean, I don't have much with customer service... Especially in a kind of place that's all about that delicate line of polite and not-polite.

One's trash is another's treasure I guess.

[He shrugs, not really wanting to think too hard on it really.]

A superhero isn't trash, come on. How useless can an actual power be?

Maybe not useless, but guess it all comes down to what they want to use it for. Do we all really want to save the world?

Since August. The research I do focuses more on the science than on individual cases, actually, although the cases certainly do contribute to what we cover.

[Richard just sets his weight back, a crooked smile on his face as Tony begins his eager questioning. He just wants to be useful. That's something he can understand.]

Don't overload yourself. You're gonna be no use for anythin' if you throw your back out or some shit.

If that turns out to be a big problem we can have a sign made up asking people to refrain from it.
