This book doesn't go too far into it, but it does mention that Vairavar begged his way to the holy city with Brahma's skull attached to his hand, then cut himself pretty severely to make a blood offering that still didn't fill Brahma's skull. It would make sense to me if he lost a limb, but Hinduism isn't really in my wheelhouse.
