22 | [Voice] Post-Snake Recovery

I only slept two hours after yesterday. Two hours, after spending the whole day fighting. It's the tenth, right? I didn't just sleep through Monday without realizing it?

[Hajime sounds pretty worn out. The Lord of the Bugmen had a very long day after fighting Wise Snake, and he is blissfully unaware that his TV interview has been airing all over the place.]

Everyone's in one piece? Let me know if you need a good meal after everything that happened; I can work something out.

[He gives a long sigh. It would be even longer if he realized that the interview had actually aired.]

And if anyone's got any advice on dealing with your family suddenly finding out about this, that would be helpful. I think I'd rather fight snakes again…

You were on TV today! [he doesn't know if that's a good thing or not, but he thinks it's kind of cool. Besides, it's not like anyone knows it's Hajime.]

If my family found out, I am not entirely sure how I would deal with it either. I hope that you can find a safe solution.

How are they reacting so far?

Outside the cousin I have on the network, only one of them knows.

She says she's just glad she knows why I've been acting weird the past few months. About as well as can be expected, even if she threw a lamp at me when she accidentally caught me in my other form.

You were talking to the reporter people and acting like you were a real bug monster. It was kind of funny!

[He groans a little.]

I couldn't think of anything else to do. They surprised me with that camera.

At least they don't know who you actually are, right?

Is it something that you wish to keep from the rest of your family, then? I would think that would be important regarding how you proceed from here.

Yeah, it's better this way. Keeps my family safer if they think I'm really just some weird mutant roach.

I was a giant bug sneaking back into my own apartment. It's understandable.

I never wanted any of them to find out in the first place. They'd worry. It's bad enough as it is.

Remember how I didn't want to change back after the fighting right away because I wasn't sure how my injuries would handle changing forms? I snuck into my own apartment through the fire escape. I didn't know that she'd been trying to call me all afternoon, got worried when she couldn't reach me, and went to the apartment to see if I was there. We surprised each other. She threw a lamp at me. I had no choice but to change back, otherwise I think she would have called the police.

Then when I changed back, I started bleeding again, and it kind of forced my hand. She knows it's got something to do with all the weird crap happening around here, and that similar things are happening to other people.

She doesn't know about you.

That sounds like it could have gone much worse. How is she handling it now? Has she told anyone else?

Also, how ARE your injuries coming along?

Yeah... did someone in your family find out? Since you had that question. The only person who knows for me is my grandpa, and since he has a number I don't know if he counts.

Understandable, perhaps, but that does not mean you should be treated any differently. You are still an important person to them.

It is natural for them to be worried.

[Speak of the Grandpa. Before Bill connects, he might be taking a moment to muffle a bit of a bitter chuckle.

Do you know that the restaurant owner wants to know if the Lord Bugman is okay with being used as a promotion for his stuff?

She's okay. Hasn't told Mom and Dad or anyone. She seems shaken; she ended up sleeping over last night after we had a long talk.

I'm fine--I heal pretty quickly now. Just a few bruises where the worst of it was. How are you? You were pretty banged up when we got the shawarma.

Yeah, my sister knows. And she definitely doesn't have a number.

I...kind of hoped I'd be able to get away with this without my family finding out.

Oh. I'm sorry. Maybe if she doesn't say anything...?

Yeah, I know. That's pretty much what she told me once we talked it over.

I know that too. But I still want to protect them.

She knows I'm a giant bug and that I bleed green, and that it's connected with the other weird stuff going on around here. Not much more than that.

[He sighs heavily.]

It's still more than I ever wanted anyone to know.

The cameras surprised me. I had to improvise.

[He sounds somewhat ashamed. But the shame is rapidly replaced by indignation.]

Like hell I'm promoting some other restaurant.

If you figure that last bit out, let me know. My mother has already called, wanting to know if I'm involved in all that mess.

[He pauses, with a wince that's pretty obvious.]

I let it go to voicemail... I need to call her back, or she'll worry. And possibly get Dad to bring her all the way out here.

[And he isn't sure he can explain the mess of his house, let alone his part in things. Because lying isn't a thing he thinks he can manage. Also, in case you couldn't tell Hajime, he's in one piece.]

Better have the Bugman Lord stop at your place saying how good it is then.

[he's teasing.
