"Captain Hook?" Michelle's gaze fell, involuntarily, to L's hands. "I can believe it." She typically tried to avoid the hipsters these days, but she'd spent enough time at the shop over the years to know what they were like.

She realized she was staring and forced herself to meet his eyes again. "But I think you're selling our generation a little short."

"It is my tendency to judge harshly on a grand scale, and generously on an individual one. Every now and then, I do meet people who are impressive to me, but very few of them call me 'Captain Hook.' Speaking of which... what do they call you?" he asked, tilting his head, slipping his hands into his pockets after noting her lingering glance.

Michelle shrugged uncomfortably. "I don't know. I don't talk to them much."

"I mean your name. 'They' extends beyond hipsters to your parents, your friends, your colleagues..."

"Oh. It's Michelle," she answers. "And you are?"

"Lazarus, but... on the network, it's just 'L'. Simpler and safer that way. Also less mortifying."

Michelle's lips quirk into a slight smile. "That's not a name you hear every day."

"Unless it's your name, in which case it's really better to shorten it," L pointed out. "It means 'God will provide', but that's not common knowledge."
