They are not random to *us*, certainly, which fits in with the past lives or alternate reality theories as well. However, they are random to the situation.

If someone was crafting an entirely false narrative, what would their purpose be? Either to convince us to take part in this "saving the earth" or to convince us to stay out of it, most likely. But the narratives show no common themes in that way. In fact, many of them suggest neither participating nor avoiding, and seem to have nothing to do with saving anything at all. So, unless unless whoever or whatever is doing this is as mad as poor Mr. Proud seems to be turning, I would tend to rule out fictional narratives in that sense.
