[It was intentional. Stupid, but intentional. He'd wanted to get just close enough for an echo: to get some control over what was happening to him, rather than just waiting for it to happen.

[Then he'd gotten too close. His expensive clothes may as well have been a bright, flashing sign. The guy moved in, and then....

[The redhead trembles, staring at the thing that had appeared. It took the man down like it was nothing. Just a few quick slashes of its bladed arms, and the guy was down. Dead.

[And now, the creature stares at him, like he's supposed to do something. Like it's waiting for him.

[If it got away from the body, he could show it to the network. Much as he scoffs at most of those idiots, maybe—

[As though reading his thoughts, the creature moves obediently away from the body.]

... Fuck.

[The screen is dark, camera currently covered by a hand. When Axel speaks, his voice is calm and measured.]

Alright, Numbers Club. Let's see if any of you know.

[The hand moves, and the camera struggles to focus on ... something. It's not human, that's for sure. The combination of bad lighting and a slightly shaking camera makes it a little tough to see, but eventually, the creature comes into view. It bobs gently, appearing to be floating slightly above the ground. The four blades on each arm look like they're colored slightly different than the rest of it.

[Look closer: it's blood.

[Axel speaks again. Despite the slight shakiness of his hand, his voice is still stubbornly calm.]

What the fuck is this thing?

I can't say I've seen a creature like that before.

Did that thing attack you?

[The camera remains steadily trained on the creature, which continues to just ... bob there. Its head is facing the camera; if it had eyes, they would be trained on Axel.]

No, it didn't attack me.

[Still calm, with no emphasis hinting at it attacking someone else. Just an answer to the question.]

Would you mind if I asked how you came across it, then?

I've heard of weird things attacking people from this network, but if it's not that...

If I knew, I'd tell ya. It just showed up.

[There's more to it than that. He was being attacked, and this thing killed the attacker. It defended him. And it seems to be listening to him.

[... But explaining all that would involve a bit more emotion than he'll let himself show, at the moment. So he locks it down. Deals with the first step: trying to figure out the what before the why.]

To my knowledge, usually there's a catalyst. Something...sets off strange things like that. Well, at least if it's centered around an individual.

For example, a while back there was this strange ringing noise. That triggered things for people who got close to the Tuning Towers. It could be that you came across something like that.

I know what the catalyst was.

[Said a little more abruptly than the rest. His voice evens out immediately after.]

What I don't know is what this "result" is.

[As though on cue, the creature rises up to perform a long, lazy flip in the air.

[Yeah. It definitely floats.]

I haven't seen anything quite like it. It's possible someone else will recognize what it is.

In the meantime, what does it do? I mean, other than float?

[There's a pause before Axel replies.]

Well. Judging by the blades on its arms, I'd say it cuts things.

That makes sense. Does it do anything else?

...This'll sound weird, but does it breathe? I can't guess whether it's supposed to be artificial or not.

[Axel's video, on the other hand, doesn't show his face. The camera is still fixed on the gently bobbing creature.]

With the blades, that's probably safest.

If it's not doing anything to you, at least it's not an immediate threat to your health though. Better than a lot of things that pop up here.

Woooow. [yup it's this kid again] Where'd that come from?

[On screen, the creature bobs gently, not appearing to object to Axel's assumption.]

He's seen this girl on Ari's playdates so often that he almost forgets that she is HERE and this is NOT a place for a child to be.

[Conveniently avoiding that last question. It's not aggressive towards him, but it sure did kill that Blood Key. Being slashed to death by arm-blade-things wasn't a clean way to go, either.]

So maybe if it's not something that targets you, it might be something you can influence.

I mean, I've heard of stranger things on here. And if it's got to do with you, it must fall under a "friend" or "foe" category.
