it's like James Bond.
Who: Nick (
detectivetroll), Ray (
synonymouswithdookie)
Where: Somewhere in Locke City, moving to the police station
When: November 12th, afternoon
What: Arrests and interrogations and secret plots, oh my
Nick hadn't actually gone out today intending to do anything big about his undercover plot. He'd told Monroe and Yuji that he was going to take it slow - well, he'd tried to tell Yuji, but his partner's still pissed at him, and now Nick's starting to get angry at him back - but still, he is planning on taking it slow.
That involves nothing more than getting friendly with some of the cops with the strange dogs, at the moment, which is why Nick's chatting cheerfully with one of them on a coffee break.
Of course, the dog picks then to react to someone passing too close by it, an obvious signal that this is Someone of Interest, and someone who will likely be seeing the inside of the interrogation room. And, even worse, Nick recognizes the guy. This one isn't a false alarm.
The cop on the other end of the leash is looking forlornly at his cup of coffee, and Nick makes a split second decision.
"I got this," he says, flipping back his coat to put one hand on his handcuffs and make sure his badge is in plain view as he moves after the guy, calling, "Sir! I need you to stop right now, please."

Yes, the shouting was back. No, it wasn't necessary, but he was pissed as shit. He speed smoked the rest of his cigarette and dramatically spat the butt out on the ground. Yeah. Fuck you everyone. He was going to litter and you couldn't stop him. He then made a dramatic show out of displaying his wrists in that 'I double dog dare your ass to put those cuffs on me' sort of way.
"Well!? Let's get this bullshit over with, huh?"
no subject
Nick's a homicide detective, he's not going to throw a fit about litter. Of course, usually he wouldn't be doing a drugs bust, either, but that's beside the point. It seems like the guy's actually going to come along without Nick having to tackle him or anything, so Nick'd rather be patient here than risk injury.
Dramatic display or not, Nick still has to cuff him, if only to keep up appearances sake, so he moves in to snap the handcuffs closed around the outstretched wrists, hoping the guy isn't going to change his mind and make things difficult.

Honestly, he was more concerned about how he was going to explain all this to his boss. Uuuuughhhh how inconvenient. He sighed, defeated as all hell, and just waited for Nick to do whatever it was that he had to do.
no subject
But not this one.
Nick leads him to his car - unmarked, but still police issue - and puts him in the back seat before getting in himself. He waits until they've driven a block or so before he says, "This isn't about me covering my ass. Well, it is, but it isn't just about that. The police are getting orders to go after network people, even if most of them don't know it. I want to know why, what their plans are."
no subject
Ray tried to get comfortable in the back seat, but the fact that he was kind of scared shitless of this whole situation was making that a little difficult. he settled for leaning against the door and staring out the window.
"What a load of bullshit. We're not hurting anything! Hell, all we've been doing is defending ourselves from weird shit! At least as far as I know. I guess I don't really pay as much attention as I should. Partly because I've been trying to avoid shit like this!"
He holds up his cuffed hands and wiggles them in Nick's rear view mirror.
no subject
Even if the real reason isn't exactly reassuring, and has gotten him in a lot of trouble with a couple of people.
"I know. It's not right, and it's not what the police are supposed to be doing. I don't like corrupt cops, and I really don't like corrupt cops that are in a position of power and can make other cops be corrupt without them knowing it. Especially when it involves network shit."
no subject
Since he was all about theatrics, he groaned and bonked his head against the window a couple times.
"At least you're bein' straight with me, I can't complain about that. You know what's gonna happen though, if my mom finds out I'm in fucking jail? She's going to fly her ass out here and kick the shit out of me. I'm dead. I am a dead man."
no subject
Nick winces at the head bonking, but doesn't say anything. Just don't hurt yourself, man.
"He can't keep you in jail that long, at least not legally. But - I don't know how he's going to play it here, if he's going to trust me or not."
no subject
Ray frowned, staring at the back of Nick's head as he spoke. Not having to stay in jail for too long was good news, however...
"Who's 'he'? You're making it sound like some comic book super villain."
no subject
Nick smiles slightly at that, though there isn't really any humor in it.
"That wasn't intentional, but for all I know, it might be the truth. Detective Sherman, he and the sheriff are the two we know for sure that're involved in this."
no subject
Best not to ask about that one.
"Jeeeesus Christ, just throw me at the final boss right off the bat, huh? Good thing I'm a master at bullshitting. I can guarantee that this guy's going to hate every fiber of my being, at least. I guess that's not really so reassuring now that I think about it..."
no subject
At another time, he'd want to know, but not when he's arresting the guy.
"I don't know if he's the final boss. Maybe more of the 'stage one' boss. There's still the sheriff, and whoever's behind ThunderCorp. Maybe more. And - I'm going to do everything I can to be in there."
no subject
Ray grumbled some bullshit under his breath and went back to staring out the window. At least there was that. Nick seemed like a pretty cool guy.
"Do what you can, I guess. Is there anything I need to do? Anything super specific I need to know?"
no subject
A little late for that. Nick has to think about that for a moment, because he does want to prepare the guy as much as possible, he just... doesn't know exactly what to prepare him for.
"You can tell me your name, actually, since I should have asked you that before instead of explaining the situation and telling you my not-quite James Bond level plan. And whatever Detective Sherman is, it's not human. Just - keep that in mind, I guess."
no subject
Damn, Ray really wanted another cigarette. Shit like this didn't happen in real life. He shook his head and took a deep breath. No avoiding this mess now, so he might as well roll with it.
"Name, right. Sergeant Ray Zimmerman, retired army. Is it safe to assume Detective Slenderman is going to do a background check?"
no subject
"Probably, yeah. I'm... also going to guess that he's not going to let you call a lawyer, and that there won't be any record of the interrogation. I don't know exactly what he's going to ask you, so be prepared for anything."
no subject
Judging from what he'd already heard so far about the police, that was the only logical conclusion he could draw from this whole mess. The police wanted people like them gone, and once they found out Ray wasn't going to be cooperative, he figured they sure as hell wouldn't have any reason to keep him around.
He silently brainstormed for a few moments before adding, "I might be able to work with this. In the event that I am horribly murdered or something though, do me a favor and find someone to take care of my cat.
"And uh. I guess tell Yuji that he was absolutely right about me needing to be more careful and that I'm sorry for being an idiot and literally never paying attention to pretty much anything going on around me. And also his tattoo is really stupid but I didn't want to say anything mean about it."
Priorities. Ray has them.
no subject
He starts to say that sure, he'll get someone to look after his cat and pass on the message, but then he processes that fully and frowns.
"Wait, what? Why would you need me to tell that to Yuji?"
no subject
Ray was about to go on and on about how he's an amazing bullshitter and one time talked his way out of getting his ass beat by three drunk army grunts, but Nick's next question kind of caught him off guard.
"Oh, he didn't tell you? We're kind of dating."
no subject
Considering what they're about to get into. Or, well, what Nick's about to get Ray into, more accurately.
"...you're the guy he's dating? Shit, he's going to kill me."
no subject
"HAH! Wow, you're in deep shit, huh buddy? It's gonna suck to be you almost as much as it sucks to be me!"
