♫ 004 [video; computer]
[The video feed opens to the view of someone who looks like they haven't adjusted their webcam properly: all that's visible is the lower half of her face, followed by a blonde side-ponytail thrown over her shoulder. She's holding a ukelele, but if certain people look past that they might see the symbol on the too-small white t-shirt she's wearing over a bright red longsleeve shirt. The t-shirt is obviously too small for her and only reaches to her midriff, but more importantly is the slashed-through record image blazoned across its chest.
The girl makes no mention of it, because she found it at a thrift store a week ago and fell in love, but doesn't have any thoughts on it otherwise. Whoops.
Though only some may recognize her as Ava, aka. "obnoxious red comic sans bitch," it is indeed Avery, and she produces a small stack of notecards, the top of which she presents to the video feed. Written in purple marker: apropos of nothing i taught myself to play ukelele
And the next card: and since the cumstained hellspawn from tampon city has apparently decided to crash our little party
i have taken it upon myself to ensure that we are properly distracted from our imminent demise via maxipad monsters
[Here there has been some expertly cut footage in which Avery accidentally presented the next card upside down, like a smooth criminal. The feed resumes after the card has been properly flipped.]
you might not have heard but im kind of a big deal on the internet
i have a blog and everything
Before lifting up the last card, her lips turn into a little smirk that she is obviously trying to repress, but is failing.
my compliments to nicki minaj
And then, hefting the ukelele in her hands, Avery abandons the cards and proceeds to regale the network with a wonderful rendition of Nicki Minaj's "Superbass". The rapping is surprisingly good, but the singing is unimpressive aside from being on key. Once the last boom boom, superbass has been sung, she snickers to herself and flips the ukelele over, revealing one more notecard, stuck to the back of the instrument.
l8r dudes dont party too hard next time
Aaaand fade out.]

Medium: Ukelele
In this piece, the artist incorporates elements from both East and West in a subtly satirical look at the cyclical nature of cultural-artistic inspiration in a global society.
Trinidadian-American artist Nicki Minaj brought together influences from J-pop and Hip Hop, drawing lines across the Pacific, and Ava inserts herself in the middle of the crossed streams - the Ukelele is, as we are all aware, a traditionally Hawaiian instrument, and expanded from there to gain popularity in Japan and the United States in the early 20th century. Like Minaj's performance itself, Hawaii is ostensibly connected to America, but the reality is a complex fusion of cultures from different continents, but the independent culture of Hawaii itself - much like Ava's artistic voice within the sea of influences surrounding it - remains strong and visible in its own right. The removal of the rapid-fire visual overload from the original piece only accentuates the underlying message while also inviting the audience to consider how music and visual art interact, and what happens when they are separated.
A complex, layered installation that challenges the listener to engage with it on multiple simultaneous levels. ★★★★
