[ It's concern that guides the nib of his pen to the top line of a fresh page. It's a fountain pen, one of his favourites, and a flower of ink is unfurling beneath the tip, but something stills his hand from moving any further.

Emery hasn't written in this journal in months. To be honest he's had no real desire to do so—not since he lost touch with the girl who gave it to him—but he doesn't feel like showing his face, and an electronic message seems too impersonal.

He's not good at watching people do potentially dangerous things without saying anything; not during times like these. He might not know everyone heading out tonight personally, but ... ]

You'll be careful, won't you?

[ For a few moments there's nothing more. Then; ]

All of you, I mean. And if there's anything I can do to help

[ —But that line peters out right there. All of a sudden he feels a bit guilty: surely if there was anything he could do he'd be heading out with them? ]

... Anything. Just send me a message. Oh—this is Emery, by the way.

[ Since he neglected to introduce himself in his last post. ]

[Despite his own uncertainties about Casval's mass recruitment, Jack feels obligated to at least attempt to provide some reassurance.]

Don't worry. We'll all be doing our best to watch each others' backs.

I know. I'm just worried that some people might not be as ready for this kind of thing than others?

[ And Emery hates to doubt, but. Too many cooks sometimes make for a spoilt broth. ]

You might be right. But that's something they'll have to figure out for themselves.

But it seems irresponsible to let people put themselves in danger just to figure out they're not ready. I mean, if there are really wolves out there—

[ But now he's just adding to his concerns. Boo. ]

I hope it's worth it, that's all.

Like I said. Don't worry. Some of us do have training, and we'll be helping to look out for everyone.

[Casval, Jack thinks, I really hope you know what you're doing...]

We all know there's an invasion coming, but nobody has enough information on what's coming and how to stop it. I don't like it much more than you do, but given the circumstances, I don't think any of us can turn aside anyone who volunteers to join up.

[ Jack's right, of course. They can't afford to do nothing in the same way that doing something might be a bit too costly ... And what's that old saying? Nothing can change until something changes? ]

You're right about that. And like I said, if there's anything I can do — I've never fought anything before, and I'm not really very good at hunting, but.

I do want to help.

[Feeling guilty and helpless is something that Jack does understand. So even if he doesn't quite believe it himself, it's easy for Jack to type the words:]

We're all in this together. Today might not be your day to help, but you have to have gotten those numbers in your head for a reason, right?

[ /HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL ]

... I hadn't actually thought about it like that.

[ But on a slightly more serious note. Emery'll be considering that for the rest of the night rather than feeling useless because he's clumsy and physically flimsy. ]

Saving the best for last, maybe?

Heh, exactly.

I think it's about time I head out, so I'll be signing off. I'm sure I'll see you around one of these days, Emery.

All right. Be careful — I'll be keeping an eye on the network just in case.

[ There's a pause. ]

And I'll hold you to that, which I suppose means you don't really have any choice but to make it back in one piece.

[If only Emery could see the look Jack gives the message. Still, it's not Emery's fault, he doesn't know.]

Or at least make sure everyone else does.

[ ...handwritten, huh? And the tone is sincerely touching, so much so that it compels Casval to respond in turn, with neat handwriting of his own. ]

Your support is appreciated, Emery. I'll try not to let down that faith you've placed in us.

Just remind me to buy you a drink if you get everyone back in one piece.

[ Now that gets a smile, even though Emery's eyes aren't there to see it. ]

That's very thoughtful of you, young man. And quite the motivator, I must admit. I haven't had a good scotch in awhile.

[ Note: for Casval, awhile = more than a few hours. Yeah. ~~Drinking problem? What drinking problem? ]~~

It'd probably best if you don't tell anyone else you're only in it for the scotch. I doubt it'll go down too well with the others.

[ Casval's is worse, arguably. He can definitely empathize. ]

There's more at stake here than just a good drink, I know. But I'll be sure to keep that in mind, anyway.

What are you hoping to get from tonight, anyway? Do you know what kind of answers you're looking for?

[ There's an even longer pause on Casval's end. It seems that question may have struck a particularly vulnerable chord with the Captain. ]

Success is my goal. But as for answers...

I suspect those will elude me still. As they elude us all.

[ Hey, if there's one thing Emery's good at it's asking questions that strike vulnerable chords! Unintentionally. Maybe even awkwardly. It can actually get a bit weird. ]

What does 'success' mean to you?

[ Well, enjoy having the question turned right back around on you, then. Someone's getting playful. ]

That depends on the context, I think? I'd consider your mission(?) a success if there are no casualties when you come back; even more so if you manage to find something out about the wolves.

[ Smarmy Brit, love. Practically runs in the blood. ]

Beyond the mission, then. What does it mean to "succeed"? To truly win at something, in your eyes?

[ Welp. Now he's just thinking about his art. There's a significant pause, then: ]

To touch people. I think I've succeeded if I can help people feel new things, or maybe even introduce them to new ways of thinking.

[ That garners a smile from even the cold-blooded Captain. ]

Never let go of that belief. Hold onto it, if you can. Life will make it hard for you, but that sort of attitude... more is certainly needed in this cruel world of ours.

I won't. Let go of it, I mean. I've never been very good at giving up on things I believe in.

[ And now it's Emery's turn to smile. ]

Will you answer my question now?

[ And he means that sincerely, because what other sixteen year old would be willing to tackle this problem head on? Even Emery is keeping his distance - he knows his strengths aren't in activities like this. Of course, he's now going to worry much more ... ]

I will, don't worry. There'll be a lot of us, so it won't be any real danger, I'm sure.
