Who: Beat and Russel
Where: Football field
When: During Tuesday practice
What: Discovering strange phenomena while tackling their teammate silly.
[Practice had been going on for a while now. After starting with individual drills and following a brief break, the Coach called everyone together to practice group tackling. They line up on the field with tacklers on one side and ball carriers on the other - Beat would've wanted to be on the ball carrying side, but they've got a few too many running backs, so being the bulkiest of that position he finds himself on the opposite corner to Russel on the tacklers side of the field. For this play, they've been instructed to run at the carrier at an angle, which means it'll probably be the two of them taking him down. Beat shoots him a glance, then grins slightly - they've got this.]

[then the whistle, and the field becomes a flurry of action. Russel takes off after the running back, briefly glancing over to make sure Beat is following suit.]

[He'll let Beat have this one, he decides. He's new so he needs the practice more. When Beat does dive for the target, he'll find he goes down surprisingly easy, and doesn't make an effort to get back up.]
[which are not things Russel will immediately notice when he skids to a stop just shy of his fallen teammates and throws a fist in the air] Glory is ours!
no subject
... Man, you all right? [No response. The boy's face is dazed with a mellow smile that Beat can see even behind the helmet.]
Bwaaah! He's all spaced out, yo! [he turns frantically to the others - though most of them are just standing there watching in a similar trance. It's very creepy.]
no subject
Oh my god. [horrified, he straightens and looks toward Beat] You tackled him so hard [accusing point!] you gave him a concussion!
no subject
Crap, what do I do!? I didn't take first aid yet!
[after flailing around in panic for a brief moment, he'll just kind of reach out and yank him over]
IT'S UP TO YOU, DOG!
no subject
[Russel is just staring down at their teammate, trying to puzzle out what they should do, when Beat yanks him over and Russel's attention snaps to him]
Me?! I'm not qualified for this! We should tell the coach! [at which point he looks up and notices that the coach seems equally spaced out, along with pretty much everyone else on the field]
...Oh...my god...
[turns to Beat, dire] You hit him so hard, you gave the entire team a concussion.
no subject
THAT DOESN'T EVEN MAKE SENSE!
no subject
You're right! That doesn't make any sense at all!
[as though he is not the one who just suggested it...]
Then why are we the only ones who aren't all spaced out?

[Beat leans down to at least try to pick the guy up off the ground. The buzzing still rings in the back of his mind from the lights earlier. He still hasn't figured out what he got from that - Could it be the result of an echo? But he can't just talk about that. ...He could try, though. Pulling his mellow teammate up by the shoulders, he looks over at Russel and speaks up, his voice hesitant.]
Maybe it's somethin' in the water? [Even if Russel's not in the numbers club, he might have been warned about that. The others may have noticed that Beat had recently switched to only drinking Gatorade.]
no subject
Wouldn't they all be laughing, then?
[pause]
[obvious realization that he probably shouldn't have said that, ] I mean--uhhh... [nope he's screwed...]
no subject
Russel, you-!?
[aghghgh wait, their team is spaced out, not deaf, er, probably. His free hand shoots up over his mouth where he bites down over his knuckle,] Mphrgh- [And having stopped the rest of his sentence from coming out, he takes his hand back out. At least the guy seems like he's standing now. Beat steps back from him, a chill creeping up his spine as he finally looks out at all of them at once. It's creepy as hell, but almost... familiar. He was about to talk to Russel while the coach was distracted, but for a brief moment, he also gets a thousand mile stare. It's not the same, mellowed look as theirs, though - Beat's actually tensed up.]

[he cautiously leans forward and waves a hand in front of Beat's face]
[and around them, their teammates seem to be slowly stirring from their daze, one by one. Russel notices it with the nearest boy first, and a spike of panic hits him as he realizes he needs to talk to Beat about whatever this means and it can't wait and it also can't be done in front of the rest of the team]
[he looks around for the coach]
HEY COACH I NEED TO TAKE BEAT TO THE NURSE'S OFFICE
[there is a mumbled 'sure whatever' from the coach's direction, but Russel doesn't even wait around to hear it, he's already grabbed Beat's arm and started dragging him off to find someplace they can talk privately]
no subject
-Russel!! We need to talk, man!
[As though he didn't realize that was exactly what they were heading toward doing. He was pretty distracted by that echo he was just having. What a wonderful world such would be...]
no subject
[he finds a secluded spot where they can't be seen or heard, and finally lets go of Beat's arm before glancing around to make sure they're alone]
You're one of the Chosen Ones, right?

[okay sparkle over]
But yeah, I mean that numbers thing.
no subject
But yo! If we both in it, then that must be why we the only ones unaffected! What the hell is going on?
no subject
--Hey, yeah! That's a good question! Maybe we're resistant to it because we're Chosen, but why are regular folks suddenly spacing out?
What if it's some kind of plot to steal their energy and we're the only ones who can stop whoever's behind it? [yes he is just citing the Sailor Moon formula]
no subject
Uh... Maybe. Is energy stealable? I don't know science, yo!
no subject
But if we're the only ones who can stop it, then we better get started on figuring out who's responsible.
no subject
Well... how close have you been payin' attention to the network?
no subject
[slowly spreading guilty demeanor...] I've had a lot of school stuff due lately, so...

[THEY ARE THE BEST CHOSEN ONES.]

[Plot twist. Now you see why he is conflicted over it.]
no subject
Oh...
Oh! [that took a second to sink in, but he gets it now, and gives Beat an understanding, concerned look] Which company is it? [someone has barely even skimmed the FAQ here]
