[There are sounds of movement in the room: someone walking, sitting, then scooting their chair forward; followed by a single note played on piano.

After a momentary pause, that someone begins to play a piece on that piano, quite skillfully. He makes a contented sigh after he finishes.]

Okay then...well, I was born in Japan, and I lived in a house in the middle of the woods until moving here when I was six. So I was never really around anyone other than my mother growing up...Well, my father was around, but he's always worked a lot. I guess that's why I'm hesitant to go beyond small talk with most people. That and spiritual reasons.

I'm very interested in spirituality...I pull my beliefs from a variety of faiths and ideals, based on what feels truest to how I see the universe. In this case, I feel like... [He pauses and momentarily considers if this would be too awkward to say, but there's no going back now.] I feel like fate will lead me to people I am meant to have meaningful relationships with. That's why I have many acquaintances, but don't usually seek close friendship. After being selected, I figured there must be some reason fate led me down that path, and that there must be people I'm supposed to meet among that group.

...I have this almost instinctual feeling that you are the first of those I'm fated to befriend, Shinji.
