[ There's a pause, because after John starts up the recording, he wonders if maybe he should just drop it after all. How important could it be, anyway? Not like they actually need to know, but...

He wants to know more about Echoes, he supposes that's it. And information can only help. So he takes a breath, and talks. ]

Apparently, I can suddenly... understand things. I've had basic knowledge of modern technology all my life, kept up best I can, but. This. Never like this.

[ A pause. ]

I fixed a laptop today. Haven't been able to do anything about it for a week... I don't know why it was given to me in the first place because I've never been known to do miracle work on technology. But I sat down with it to try at least one last time and I just knew.

...I guess I don't need to worry about things breaking on me again.

[ He laughs a little to himself, pauses again, and clears his throat a bit awkwardly. It's a pretty uneasy thought, honestly, as convenient as it is. ]

I suppose this would be one of those Echo things, yes? What exactly do we know about them, aside from what they can be? Why do we call them Echoes? That's what puzzles me most. Who thought of the name in the first place? It has to come from somewhere.

Friend of mine. Theorized, based on new memories, that they were reflections of other lives. Hence, "Echoes"

I've heard more people call them pulses than echoes.

I think because when it happens you feel something like a heartbeat.

I've heard people say "pulse" as well as "echo". I just call them "weird memory thingy majiggy" myself, but I guess that's not a technical enough term!

[ She shrugs, although he...can't see that. ]

I think it's just like the "Numbers club". Someone uses a term, for whatever reason, and it sticks. That's how words work.

You mean why do people think they're memories?

I mean, that's what I heard first thing I got here. It was in the guide.

If you've got another explanation for 'em, I'd be happy to hear it! As it is, it seems a very specific delusion otherwise...and I don't have any evidence against it, y'know? Whereas it sort of makes sense in context. Kind of. I dunno, my sister basically raised me on anime, that may make me a bt open minded about it? Or at least it sounds like how a story might go?

i'm not really into linguistics, but i think someone should start keeping track of where these words and phrases are coming from. weird not-brainwashing stuff aside, we're kind of making a new subculture here, aren't we? that's cool!

[ that gives her a chuckle on her own end. he doesn't sound nearly old enough to be her grandpa, but the lead-in to the word was still tentative enough to be a little funny. ]

"tubular"? "radical"? maybe just plain remarkable?

"Echo" -- is... -- one of the newest words for them -- isn't it? [A silly rhetorical punctuating question to be sure, but alas it slipped out.]

I don't exactly -- like it, much... either. I... usually call them pulses... -- I think I heard others use "flashbacks", first -- when I -- started in April.

[Voice]

[personal profile] scramasax 2013-08-13 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's -- easier. Mostly. ...Referring to that -- "pulse" - sensation - that they start with... Although it doesn't describe -- the "experiences" - themselves -- I know.

I personally called them "weird memory shit" until I had people call them echos and pulses to me. I think I heard one other, but oh well.

Lately, if they aren't a physical thing, I just call them memories.
