[ It's a rather posh set up, like this was some professional solemn news broadcast or something. Though, to be fair, John does think it's very important. He's seated at his desk, arms folded in front of him, and a furrow to his brow. ]

There is a matter I wish to discuss with you.

People have been losing their jobs, been suspended from schools, and hunted down simply for being numbered. It's more than enough that in any other case you could bring it to court but, likely, the law is not entirely sure what to make of us. In the fine print, I suppose we aren't exactly covered.

[ But if you ask him, that's honestly absurd, and that's clear in his tone.

He takes a break to grab a cup of tea and take a sip. There's a shift in his eyes, into something exhausted. He's tired. There's a lot going on and he's not entirely sure what to do. ]

We tend to take the law into our own hands, but I think perhaps it's worth actually trying to work with it. If anyone else would like to try, I would be glad to have some help.

Any inputs or thoughts are welcome. I'd love to hear them.

Yes, I saw it. I think it's a good idea, even if it needs to be approached with caution. What I'm thinking of, however, is more long term.

Either we sit still and quiet and do nothing while we get treated as less than human, or we take a chance, choose carefully and hope it doesn't end up biting us in the arse.

What we can do is what I intend to find out.

I'd be willing to help as best I can, but better to be aware of the potential dangers, yes? If we're to become recognized - covered - I doubt it will come easily. Not with things in the state they currently are.

I am very aware of the dangers. However, you often have to risk things to get something done.

Look for other avenues. I do not believe we can do this all on our own. We'll need help from somewhere. I am only not quite sure from where, exactly.

We may be our own little group, but we are still a part of this world and its people. We can't stand entirely alone. That'll only strengthen our status as "others."

I would be willing to try, but there is danger in outing people who aren't already open about their status. We don't know who knows what and who knows who, which I suspect will make it hard to arrange any kind of fair trial, which also leads me to think that we should test the waters somehow first and see if there's anyone on our side or anyone who might be convinced to help us.

Which is slightly illegal in itself, so comes with it's own dangers.

I don't know man, a bunch of us have done some rather bad law breaking. I think half of us would be arrested and put in jail.

[Himself included. He's pretty sure killing somebody was on the list of "very illegal."]

I wouldn't say half. I prefer being optimistic.

I am well aware we are far from saints. That does not change that the way some have treated us is absurd.

[Sheila doesn't bother to reply over the network when she sees the post. Instead, she just takes a minute to let him finish, then heads over to his office. Knocking lightly on the door frame before she enters.]

Hey. You doing okay, John?

[She feels a little guilty. She's been so wrapped up in her own problems that it hasn't occurred to her that her roommate's feeling the pressure, too. His ex-wife and daughter live locally. Hell, he's completely lost his own identity - twice - when his body changed. And he's still trying to find some way to help the rest of the Numbered. Including certain idiots who get themselves on the news for losing their temper and blowing things up.]

Anything I can do to help?

[ If it weren't for his ex (still not wife, but it's not like it really matters) and his daughter - and, he supposes, now Emil too - he would consider leaving. It really is dangerous at this point, and he doesn't really feel like pushing it anymore than anyone else. A part of him wants for all of them to leave, his daughter and ex too, but both of them keep saying they'll just wait for it to blow over.

It worries him that with some digging, since he's been on TV, it can't be too hard to figure out who his family is.

But then he also knows that if someone would really like to get at them ... Would it really matter if they were here or on the other side of the States or even in Europe? He doesn't know.

But he wonders. Constantly.

At the sound of her voice he turns the chair around, putting his cup of tea in his lap. ]

As soon as I think of more exact measures, I wouldn't say no to the helping hand. If you really don't mind it. I won't force your hand either.

You wouldn't have any suggestions on how to go about it? I must say I've never had to get involved with the law, as such.

I like the idea of going to the law, but I do have some concerns as to what they might do were they to realize I was actually born as something human law would consider property.

As it is now, I'll gladly help defend anyone who needs it.

Being "numbered" isn't a protected class. [She spits it out, clearly angry about her lot in life at this point.] Neither are most of the things that come with it, like being undead. So it comes down to personal grievances, and in most cases, there isn't anything we can do about it. The mafia isn't something we can readily oppose, either.

So I agree that we need to work together with the law if we can, to take back our lives. There isn't much I can do, aside from speaking or writing, but I'm tired of living in fear of what tomorrow will bring. Or if my home is still standing.
