37th Howl | Monday, June 2 [OPEN]

Where: Mostly the high school, but walking in the evening is also a thing
What: The biology teacher is busy thinking about things

The last week of school really doesn't have much going on. Finals are still happening in a few classes, but for the most part, the students have checked out. Most of the seniors aren't even here.

For once, Lyall isn't even trying all that hard to keep his students engaged. He's set up movies that sorta-kinda have something to do with biology in most of his classes, though his health class still had to take their final so that's what they're doing today, and for the most part is focused in the network and his own thoughts.

Because he really wants to go talk to that alien, but secrecy has been a thing for so long, that it requires a lot of thinking. Which leads to a lot of being distracted. Honestly? His students don't care much.

Once the sun goes down, when school is well behind him, he goes out for his usual evening walk. ... still thinking. That one happens with his current favorite person, Nick, because he does want to talk to someone about this, and his significant other is probably a good idea, and not just because he's a cop.

After last bell, in the school halls.

"Randy!" Sheila wasn't able to sneak up on him on a good day, but she'd been quiet and quick enough to put in a good effort, slipping beside him and clapping him firmly on the shoulder. "Man, I admit I'm usually a little sad to see the munchkins go, but as crazy as this year's been I'm kind of glad for the break."

Yeah, sorry Sheila, no sneaking up on the werewolf these days. He still spent the school day with one earplug in, but that just moderated the sound rather than really muffled it. He half-turned just before she put a hand on him, but it was with a smile. "Not teaching summer school, then?" He also kept his American accent as well as he could, when on campus and somewhat in public, so no Brit for Sheila. Not right now, anyway.

"I snagged a couple classes, but it's not the same as having a full schedule, y'know?" She'd been wearing long sleeves and gloves all the time, lately. Even though the weather was warming up and the school wasn't exactly equipped with AC. "Though I'm darn happy about not having to keep a leash on the numbered kids for a bit."

"Knowing some of them, they'll be in summer school classes," Lyall commented, thinking of a couple of his own students, trying to make up classes or, more rarely, get a little ahead. "I am looking forward to the couple of weeks off in the meantime, though." Even if he was a bit conflicted on how exactly to spend them. He finished locking up his classroom, and started heading for the door out of the building, looking thoughtful. Again.

"I really hope not, or I might have to kill one of them myself. I tell you, Randy, I like my job, but I only have so much patience." She shook her head. Some might argue that she has rather less patience than any high school teacher ought. "Got any big plans for the summer?"

"I'm taking some classes in July on that whole new common core requirement," he answered with a little shrug, putting on his hat, a wide-brimmed fedora affair, as they approached the door to the outside sidewalk. "I'll be fairly busy, between that and summer school in the morning. Plus, well, Nick will likely be taking up some of my evenings."

Had Sheila figure them out yet? He really isn't sure.

Always appreciative of good gossip, Sheila's eyes lit up. Something about Lyall's tone made her think he wasn't talking about running around as a werewolf with supervision. "Why, Randy, you didn't tell me you were getting lucky." She waggled an eyebrow suggestively.

The look he gave her in response to that expression was a wash of embarrassed, mildly annoyed, and a little bit pleased with himself. "Now and then, maybe. Mostly it's more quiet sorts of things, but now and then."

His reaction didn't make her inclined to stop teasing. "I can think of plenty of things that'd be nice and... quiet." She winked and patted his shoulder again. "Nick, huh? Well, you do have good taste, I'll give you that."

"He's the one who started it, after a fashion." Lyall pushed open the door to the outside, paused to squint at all that light, then held it for Sheila. It was a bit embarrassing, but Sheila was a friend, like Karl, and also he kind of wanted to talk about it with somebody. Sheila, he thought, might be a bit easier than Karl about it. "After we went away with Hajime over spring break, to test the full moon's effect on me outside the city. Apparently outside the city he's a terrible flirt."

"Really. Is he now? you know this means we have to have coffee some time soon, Randy. I just have to hear all the juicy details." What can she say? She's on a dry spell, and living vicariously through Lyall will give her a much-needed dose of normalcy.

"With school out after this week, it'll have to be off-campus," Lyall points out, wincing a little at the idea of sharing the juicy parts. That much, at least, is private. Instead, he goes with more detail on the hooking up part: "Well, he did spend the whole trip, pretty much, flirting with me, and not Hajime. Making pointed comments, silly compliments, definite... well, interest. You have to know, Sheila, I haven't exactly had many people seeming that interested." He isn't exactly a prize, and he knows it.

"Like the break room coffee's worth gossiping over, anyway." She rolls her eyes a little. "Sounds like he's had his eye on you for a while, if he moved that fast. Although, you know you probably wouldn't do that badly if you didn't spend so much time up to your ears in work." He was cute, in a gentlemanly sort of way. Not her type, but he definitely had his good points.

"I've had dates, you know," Lyall protested, a little weakly. "Not recently, what with this network thing taking up so much of my time, but still, I have."

"Mmhmm, sure. But you know Randy, there's a date and then there's a date. Sounds like Nick is the latter." She nudged him a little, smiling.
