So let's say you picked up something from those statues or whatever and you're having some trouble controlling it. Also, it's not exactly something easy to hide and very limited how often you can use it, but obviously not something a normal person can do. Please don't ask me what it is because I prefer not to discuss that.
What I am looking for is how any others who have gained strange abilities have learned how to control them, especially how to turn them on and off at will. I need ideas to try.

Since I'm sure you are just worried sick about me, Sir Lancelot. I thought I'd let you know that after a night's rest and trying out that other ability that there is no need for this damsel to be rescued any longer. I do appreciate your timely rescue though.

I mean! If your other self was able to do it without much thought, maybe over-thinking it makes it more complicated than it actually is? What happens when you try relaxing and treating it... hm. Treating it like moving your fingers on a keyboard, maybe? I know I do that without much thought but I manage to hit the keys I need without many mistakes, if any! But when I focus on the keys too much I end up making more mistakes.
And maybe you could keep track of the things happening around you when it does happen? Writing it down so you don't forget. That way, if something similar happens, you'll be able to tell if you get the same reaction or not. If you don't then it might just be that it's random!
[Private/Text]
But writing things down when it happens is a good idea. Maybe I just need data like I'd need for a computer program to figure out the pattern.
[Private/Text]
You recognized them..? Ah, I'm sorry you've had to see something like that. As awful as that is, it's a clue, right? To whatever is happening to everyone. There may be a way to make it all go away once we know what's going on.
Oh! Right, computer patterns. And you're good at stuff like that right?
[Private/Text]
Quite good with them. I also have to be able to spot bugs in code by the output I get. I could try to treat it like finding a bug in a program.
Re: [Private/Text]
That's amazing! I wish I was that good with computers. It sounds like a good way to try to figure this all out, too.
[Private/Text]
No, I didn't kiss him to get this to happen. I accidentally ran into him and he caught me when that happened. I mean, he's nice and all but I definitely have no romantic feelings for him!
[Good thing this is text, because yeah.]
[Private/Text]
Of course! I didn't think you did.
It sounds like a lot of people just need to see something or meet someone for these things to be triggered. How do you know you both were faking it? You just... felt it?
[Private/Text]
Yeah, just felt it. She didn't even like him all that much and was using him.
Do you ever fear at all that you may end up becoming this other self that we're all seeing? I really don't want to be anything like mine because she's a horrible person.
[Private/Text]
I don't know if it's possible to just become someone else even if they do look like you. You still have your memories and who you are now. That can't just go away!
[Private/Text]
The only good thing is that if I ever figure out how to use all this I won't have to worry about defending myself.
[Private/Text]
That's a good thing, yes! You can defend yourself and your friends, your family. Even if the situation is bad we can certainly make the best of everything.

[Yes, she protests too much. She's totally falling for him.]

She's shippin' it]Not at all! He's a very kind person. Thoughtful, polite, and very helpful.

And has had somewhere between 16 and 19 girlfriends in five years. Yet I can see how, he's an outrageous flirt.
[Private/Text]
[ How did this evolve into talking about boys... oh well, she's having fun. ]
How do you know how many girlfriends he's had, anyway?
[Private/Text]
I asked him how true the rumors were and if he'd run out of fingers and toes counting them all.
[Private/Text]
That's certainly one way to find out!
[Private/Text]
Well, he's the one who said I should just ask. He's too fun to tease though.
