Aside from defense lessons on Wednesdays, anyone who wants to practice can show up at the dojo in Japantown. I'll be there in the afternoon on Mondays and Fridays. Skill level doesn't matter, sparring benefits anybody.

Japanese martial arts and swordsmanship, primarily. But I also learned more Western techniques in basic training.

Most people don't understand the difference. Guess I finally got used to it.

The main principle is anticipating the movement of one's opponent and responding to it. I guess it involves throwing often enough.

An exchange sounds interesting. Most people I've spoken to lack a formal discipline.

yeah see karates a ton more offensive that that its more about stopping ur opponent cold than rly "responding"

It always did seem to focus more on striking, as opposed to countering, an opponent.

I've been at it for about ten years.

I had a private tutor, so lessons mostly depended on my progress, rather than set pattern.

Same instructor. He taught me everything I knew, before I moved.

I remember him being strict, but everything he said was true. There were things I never could've changed or improved without his instruction.
