Some old homeless fellow calling himself the Sage of the Earth gathered everyone down there and after he was done talking to them, a trap of some sort was sprung, and the Sage of the Earth died! The people down there barely made it out alive!

[Surely this is the best possible summary of the events Siegfried could have received.]
