I'm not sure what exactly happened two days ago, but I don't like it.

I'd like to help out where I can, but... I'm not exactly fit to give anything. Unless anyone wants to pet me. I can let them pet me. That was weird, though... ever since I watched that video where that weird human was talking, I can speak human-talk.

[Her eyes widen a bit, and she perks up.] Oh, I have to talk to Gogo! Gogo and Fay and that boy that gives my humans "pizza" sometimes and likes talking to me, can you all please contact me? That is, assuming that you're all okay.

Uh...I'm Mamoru Nakamura. Nice to meet you.

Very nice to meet you, Mamorunakamura. That's a really long name, are those normal? [Last names just don't exist for cats.]

Well it's actually two names. Nakamura is a family name. Those are normal for humans - my mother and father, and sister and brother are all called Nakamura. But my name is just Mamoru. So you can call me that.

Oh. Mamoru, then. [She scrunches her nose.] Humans are really weird. Even weirder now that I can talk to them.

Not as weird as talking to a talking cat.

...really really basically, it's when you judge someone based on how they look. You know how some humans have different skin colors? It's basically assuming bad shit about someone because of that.

Do you mean, like... if I said all tabbies are dumb and the cat that lives across the Thunderpath from me is dumb because he's a tabby?

Kittypets. [She blinks.] Kittypet is a word that outside cats use like that, I think. For the lazy house cats that stay inside all the time.

[...Wait but she's a kittypet. This is genuinely concerning.]

Actually, that sounds more like classism to me? That's when you assume things about someone based on how they live. You know, how much money they have, what their job is, where they live...

...wait, cats are classist?

[He has to stop himself from saying, of course they are.]

And here I thought I was imagining my brother's cat judging me.

Not... really. But outside cats are much better than kittypets. [She fluffs herself up.] I guess if you're fatter or lazier than other cats that's bad, it means you don't do a whole lot that's useful. Kittypet is a really rude word, though. It's like... saying they're just a toy. A plaything for humans. House cat is nicer. Outside cats are better because they have to work harder to be alive. Their lives have more meaning, I guess.

...ok, so "kittypet" a slur.

Yes. I suppose it is.

So what's this about outdoor cats judging house cats? Why's an indoor cat's life got less meaning because they don't have to work hard? Isn't it more a case of privilege?

Well, it's that all we do is run around in circles. Our lives aren't exciting. We don't hunt, we don't have to fight the cold of leafbare, and if we get sick our humans will just take us to the cutter and get fixed up. Unpleasant, but still a luxury. Outside cats have to depend on themselves for food and water and herbs and a good night's rest, so they're better suited to surviving. If we didn't have humans, house cats would all die.

Is that really how you see it...?

There's a lot of humans who couldn't find food and water themselves if they were left on their own. If we didn't have stores and computers and cars, well...there are probably some who would figure it out, but most of us would probably either starve or start stealing food from other humans.

They've made a lot of movies about that, actually.

But does that make our lives less meaningful?

It's very important for a cat to be able to survive no matter what happens to them. That means we can't allow ourselves to be dependent on anyone or anything, especially not humans. Being a house cat makes live easier, but that just means you're dependent on not one thing but lots of things. And most house cats have no idea how to take care of themselves because they've never hunted or hidden from danger ever and they don't remember their mothers telling them how to or maybe she didn't remember either. [She fluffs herself up.] I remember my mother telling me about how to live outside, though. She was a wild cat.

Yeah, from my human perspective, that's really weird.

It doesn't matter that much for humans. I mean, it's not nearly as important that we be able to survive on our own, because we haven't had to do that - at least in a lot of parts of the world - for hundreds of years. So there's no shame for us in depending on things.

...actually, we think the survivalist types with hunting rifles and bunkers out in the woods who could probably actually survive on their own are kinda crazy.

I guess all humans think like kittypets, then.

Not that that's... really anything wrong. Well, it is, but I guess you don't have to worry about survival the way you all are. So...

Neither one's right or wrong. They're just different.
