Fifth Bite [Open/Video]

[One of the resident vampires turns up again on screen, but this time there is a stunned, almost disbelieving look on her face. Somewhere in the background there's a whispering voice, indistinct enough that even Emilia couldn't quite tell what was being said... If it was even coherent to begin with.]

I can't be the only one hearing this, can I...?

[She reaches up and adjusts the webcam, pointing it at the source of the sound. A glowing, indistinct sphere that shows up on the camera, which Emi's eyes can't quite see. They are still functionally human, after all.]

It's saying something, but I'm not sure what.

[Emi opened her mouth to continue, but a gasp interrupts her, her body suddenly overtaken by a sharp pain in her muscles... But just like that, it fades...] Ahh... I... may have had a pulse.

[She readjusts the webcam once more, but this time she manages to unintentionally crush it, ending the feed.]

A white globe hangs behind you.

[He's heard that they were around in the blackouts, though he didn't encounter one himself. What does it mean that they now also appear in completely well-lit places?]

At least I know I'm not going mad.

[She couldn't begin to guess what that meant, other than the fact these things were still around and probably following people like her or something. Probably means something bad.]

Or if you are, then all of us are.

[Considering that the balls of light seemed to not be visible to unnumbered people... but then, so is the network.]

Oh, that's one of the... ghosts that hang around here.

[She had one in the room with her too actually. And was doing her absolute best to ignore it.]

Now then, have you seen these ghost things before?

[They're definitely related to whatever happens to be giving them powers, since she gained an echo. Now she's tremendously strong like vampires tend to be.]

So far it isn't doing much more than being mildly disturbing and giving me a pulse.

Now I've got the strength of a vampire.

Oh, the ghosts again. [He almost sounds bored. He's kinda used to ghosts.]

[Emi is quiet for a moment. Huh, he sounded pretty young.]

I gather this is common. [No blackout like some of the other sightings...]

[Yep, only a couple years older than your little cousin.]

Seeing them without the blackouts isn't very common, though they've been visible in mirrors. And on the network, apparently.

[Still too young, if you ask her.]

By the sound of it, you have seen quite a lot of them.

Oh, really?

So, you're a vampire. I guess anything is possible here.

[She was an angel being. Everything probably was possible.]

[Shame no one consults her on this stuff.]

Been seeing these ones for weeks, pretty much anywhere. But overall I've been able to see ghosts for months.

There's zombies, and I think someone's a ghost.

[If she's an angel, she doesn't need to be worried about being asked for blood.]

[She's likely to complain about Dani being involved sooner or later.]

Hmm. Something to do with your past self?

[Fun for all concerned, surely.]

Past self was a death god, so yeah.

A bit young for a death god, aren't you? Ah, perhaps that's better than being a vampire like myself and my cousin.

No, apparently I'm not. [Mildly defensive, but only mildly; twelve is a perfectly acceptable age to be a death god, surely.]

Your cousin?

[Well, she changed the subject for now, since she brought up her cousin.]

Dani. I wouldn't be surprised if you've talked to her by now. You're a kid too, after all.

Yeah, we've met. [She was on his team when the successful break-in to Thundercorp happened. But . . . details, right?]

I see. At least there's kids close to her age around here, she doesn't have many friends outside the network.

Not before now. But they have to be the ones that showed up during the blackouts.

[He wouldn't go so far yet as to call Dani his friend. But he at the very least doesn't mind her. With how irritable he can be, that's something.]

[Almost a shrug in his voice.] She seems nice enough. [And very quiet, which is probably why she doesn't have a lot of other friends. Unlike Toushirou, who doesn't have a lot of friends because he's no fun and has a tendency to be a grump.]

I have to say, I'm a little glad it did show up just now, even if I broke something accidentally.

If those mob types come after me, they're in for quite a shock.

[He's not the only kid other than Dani around, given what she's told her.]

And yet she wants to help you all the same, despite what I try to tell her. She likes to sneak off all the time and worry my uncle and myself.

Because of the pulse that it gave you?

[That seems to be the obvious conclusion, and... well, he's still of the opinion that that kind of pulses are the only positive thing about pulses in general. The ones that give them combat abilities. Even though he still loathes seeing children and teenagers being dragged into the whole thing. Or anyone, relaly.]
