[Open] Summer Tutoring

WHO: Sheila and YOU!
WHEN: Any time
WHERE: Her apartment or a neutral meeting spot (cafe or coffee shop)
WHAT: Sheila's offering a bit of summer school help. Which her students may or may not appreciate.

Sheila's put out word among the local high school students (and their parents) that she offers tutoring over the summer, by appointment, at reasonable rates. Of course her focus is history, but she can also lend a hand with basic math, study skills, and paper writing.

Her sessions are held in her apartment, though she's willing to meet at a coffee shop or cafe if her clients - or their parents, since it's pretty common that they wind up doing the hiring - prefer.

Either way, she greets her students with a stack of papers and a grin that anyone who's had a class with her would recognize as meaning business. "I sure hope you're ready to work! I don't slack off just because it's summer, you know."

When his parents start hauling him to some apartment building, Danny's not sure what to expect. They didn't tell him much of anything, so he spent the entire trip over wondering what could possibly be in store for him.

When the door finally opens and he sees, of all people, Ms. Go, Danny does not even try to hold back in an attempt to be polite. No, he throws his head back and groans, long and loud. His mother glares at him disapprovingly and says, "Now, Danny, have some manners!"

To his credit, Danny does stop, but he does his best making it clear from his face that this is the last place he wants to be.

"Oh, don't worry about it, Mr. and Mrs. Fenton! I'm sure once we get to work, Danny will find the time just flies by." Sheila winks at the boy. "I just know Danny wants to be well prepared for his SATs, after all." Oh, yes. She's definitely enjoying this way too much.

"Oh yes, we know so as well," says his mother with another stern glance at her son. But she looks back up to Sheila with a warm grin. "So we'll just leave you two to it! Danny, we'll be back in an hour, alright?" And with that, they walked down the hallway away from the apartment.

Danny looks up at his teacher. "Did you really have to make the 'flying' joke?" If he's a little more judgmental and quick to talk back, it's just because he's cranky. And also because it's summer break and she can't do anything to his report card right now.

After the disaster that was her history final, it seemed like her dad needed to give her some help and fast. While she didn’t fail, she didn’t do too well either. After spending so much time on her algebra final, it looked like she completely forgot about history. Oh well, it wasn’t her fault that history was tricky to get! Nor was it her fault that she only managed to get C on it!

With a sigh, she tapped against the paper and then back at Ms Go. She often wondered by her brother would make things harder for her but now? Oh, Abby knew better.

"I have no idea what you're talking about!" That's okay. Sheila enjoys a bit of a challenge, not to mention the ability to speak her mind without the school board coming down on her head. She ushers him inside. "Have a seat." She gestures towards the kitchen, where the table's set up for a study session. And, surprisingly, a tray of crackers, cheese, and fruit.

Sheila glanced up at her over the papers she was reading through. Abby's final, actually. She had to smile a little. The girl looked so apprehensive... someone must've told her that she bit. Really, she had nothing to worry about. At least not yet.

"Well, Abby, from what I see here what you really need help with is study strategies. You're kinda all over the place, kiddo. Unless you had questions about a specific topic that's tripping you up?"

Of course she was, especially when she heard all those rumors about how what a strict teacher she was. At first, she didn’t want to believe it. Why would her brother just make life so difficult for a teacher when they were just doing their job? They were teaching us, there was no need to be mean.

Then when she found out she needed to study? That suddenly changed everything. As she looked away, she started to mumble. “Well, I had some trouble with Algebra and spent all my time studying for it. ...But I also forgot to study history too…” And probably a few others but they weren’t quite as bad as her final though.

He enters the kitchen, but then halts for a moment, surprised by the spread.

"Wow, uh. Nice food. Having a party?"

Between the move from California to Locke City a couple months ago and her more recent decision to become a super hero, homework just wasn't really on Robyn's priority list and that really bit her in the butt come exam time. She managed to pass just by the skin of her teeth, but she certainly could use the extra help.

She'll look at the stack of paper with wide eyes before she lets out a defeated sigh and takes the papers. This was going to be a long day.

"Y-yeah. Work, that's great. Just great..."

"Nope." Sheila tugs off her gloves and shrugs out of her jacket as she heads over to one of the chairs. "But I find things tend to go a little more smoothly when no one's peckish. Brain fuel. Don't you think so?" She pops a grape into her mouth as she settles in.

Of course, now that she's just in a sleeveless blouse, it's impossible to ignore the fact that her skin's green.

"Exactly!" Sheila set down the packet. "See, with the right study skills, you'll learn how to manage your time better, and study faster. That way you'll have plenty of time for all your classes." She sips her iced coffee, thankful that the cafe has air conditioning. Long sleeves and gloves in summer was brutal. "I know your folks set this session up, Abby, but what do you want to get out of this?"

"Hey, you're here so we can work it out together, right? Was there a particular subject you had trouble with? Might give us a good place to start." Sheila's apartment is set up for tutoring, with her usual plate of munchies out, along with a pitcher of iced tea. She hasn't taken off her jacket or gloves, though. As far as she knows, Robyn isn't part of the Numbers club.

She gave a sigh. How should she know? Her dad was the one who signed her up for these sessions when she didn’t want to. Of course she should have managed her time better but when she was on the network too, how could she? Maybe she should have just told him and save herself from this fate!

On second thought, maybe that would make things even worse.

“I don’t know.” She began patting her pencil. “I guess maybe just try and pass history next year?”

"Yeah... I guess you've got a good point there." Robyn forced up a smile and started to glance over the papers.

"I'd say math is where I had it the worst but well I could have done better in English and history too." She'll give a little hopeless shrug. "Ugh... It's just hard to focus in classes they're so boring."

"I...guess," he says, walking closer to the table where she's now sitting. However, that's when he notices the skin tone--green. Maybe not as bright a green as he remembers, but her skin color could be changing in phases the same way his hair and eyes did. But the hair and everything else is almost exactly the same.

He can't stop himself from staring and mentally comparing his history teacher to his memory.

Sheila starts opening up a prep book before she notices his expression. She arches an eyebrow at him. "Uh, Danny. Earth to Mr. Fenton. We haven't even started yet, so you can't claim that I've broken your brain this early." She waves a hand in front of his face.

"That," Sheila says seriously, "is a perfectly acceptable goal. Start small, right?" She flips open a textbook, turning it to a bookmarked page. "So let's start small with the tips, too. We'll focus on something that you should be familiar with... American Revolution?"

"Gee, thanks." Sheila's voice was dry as she raised an eyebrow. "We try so hard." But hey, it's hardly the worst thing a student's said to her. With a soft snort, she waves her hand to dismiss the comment. "History's my bag, mostly, but I can help with basic math, test taking, and paper writing. Maybe not the most interesting, but I'll try to spice it up."

"S-sorry! I-I wasn't trying to offend you or anythings. I just..." Okay Robyn, now you're making excuses to your tutor. This is going just great.

"Okay. Right. Sounds good, and I'll try to be interested? I mean-I'll do my best." She'll do her best to smile sweetly, but it doesn't look like the most convincing thing in the world.

It's around then that her eye starts to feel a bit dry and itchy from her contact. She'll reach up and rub at it a little, she had only recently started wearing them and still wasn't completely used to them. ...Unfortunately her rubbing caused the blue contact lens to pop right out of her eye and onto the table.

"Oh-Uh-Oh no!" She reaches down to grab the contact but at the same time glances over to Sheila revealing that the eye under the blue contact lens was silver.]

Sheila watches her incredulously as the girl struggles for an excuse, and pours herself a glass of iced tea as she waits for her to calm down. At least, she does until she sees the eye.

With a long-suffering sigh, she sets her glass down and shakes her head. "Let me guess. You had trouble finding time to study. And not because of boys and video games or... whatever kids are into these days." Hey, at least she isn't angry or shocked?

Robyn just stares for a moment. That wasn't exactly the response she was expecting and she was very grateful for it.

"Uhmm... Yeah. Exactly that, actually. Besides, my dad would probably kill me or sit me down for one of the most awkward conversations in my entire life if he found out I was hanging out with a boy. That's something I'd rather avoid, y'know?" She'll flash another nervous smile before she holds up the contact lens.

"Speaking of awkward conversations, do you mind if I use your bathroom so I can put this back in?"

"Only if you don't mind that I take these awful things off." Sheila peeled her gloves off her pale, greenish hands and tossed them aside. "You'd have found out eventually, if you're one of the Numbered kids. It's through that door there, on your left." She shrugged off the jacket, too. Much more comfortable.

"Y-your skin." Tactlessly, he points a finger at her hands. "It's green."

Robyn just gave Sheila a dumbfounded look as she removed her gloves and jacket.

"Wait... So I didn't just completely blow the whole secret to a random stranger?" Robyn let out a sigh of relief and then smiled.

"Phew! That's great! Yeah, I don't mind at all. I'll be right back." Robyn dashed off toward the bathroom and returned shortly later, but instead of putting the contact back in she had removed the other one as well.

"Those things drive me nuts. They never want to stay in."

Without another thought, Abby did what she was told and turned the paper over. “Well, what do you want me to know about it? It started over how America wanted to be free from England because of those high taxes right?” Of course, that was really the only thing she knew. Everything about the war and who fought in it? Nothing at all.

Well, maybe except George Washington but still!
