Honestly, Nick wishes he could have just let him go. They've fought weird network-related things together twice, and that would have been enough for Nick to bend the rules for him under another circumstance.

Nick leads him to his car - unmarked, but still police issue - and puts him in the back seat before getting in himself. He waits until they've driven a block or so before he says, "This isn't about me covering my ass. Well, it is, but it isn't just about that.
