[she's had the whole bike ride over to steel herself for this moment, but now that she's faced with it, she can't get the words out.

she steps forward, quiet, hesitant, everything she normally is not. though she would never admit it, she's scared to tell him this. it's a secret she'd been keeping from everyone for years. to purposely destroy that, to show a part of herself that no one else had ever seen... what if this changes how he feels about her?

what if he doesn't accept her anymore?

karson is her oldest friend. she's known him since she was a wee petit babby, too young to care that sticking crayons in her mouth was not a healthy living choice. he was the one who stuck by her when no one else would, too weirded out by her eccentricities. she could rely on him to listen to her whenever she needed it (even if she wasn't exempt from judgment). he played her shitty tabletop laserbear games, sat through her buddy cop movie nights and helped her analyze their relationship dynamics, saw through her kindergarten basketball stealing shenanigans to see the person beneath.

she takes a shaky breath.

there is no one she trusts quite like him.]

Karson, I...

[the words come out slow and tremulous; this is the biggest confession she has or will ever make, but she can't stand the idea of him never knowing.]

I don't actually think I'm a dragon.
