Investigation of mine revealed man claiming to be "Sage of Earth", indicated we needed to find "Seven Gems of Earth" to seal off entry point of invaders. Mine collapsed afterwards, attacked by odd creatures. Don't know if he was trustworthy. Video here. Grues have been reappearing since.
