Action

Who: Julien Sakazaki and ANYONE who might be...
Where: At the Dead District statue
When: Friday afternoon.

Julien arrived with a gaggle of art students and ex-art students, all bundled up. It was a bit colder than usual for mid-April, but the sky was light.

The group went from ribbing one another about who was the biggest hipster of them all - Julien's dyed blue hair and closely cut monochrome ensemble made him a good target, but he maintained that without a hat, interesting facial hair, or scarf he wasn't the biggest one - to scuffling near silence as they reached the sculpture. It seemed an odd change, and one Julien himself was immune to. Or he could ignore it for a bit, at any rate.

A few cursory minutes of examination, a nervous comment or three about chisel marks, and his friends almost collectively decided to go to a coffee shop. They claimed it was too cold. If any of them noticed what he noticed, they didn't say.

Julien stayed for a while to study the thing, walking closer and backing off to feel how that weird heartbeat sensation grew or faded. It was early enough in the day, he thought. Not too dangerous to be alone in this part of the Dead District.

Rue didn't normally hang around this part of the city. No real reason to. She didn't live very close by and while condemned buildings might be an attractive mystery for teenagers she was not so concerned with the allure empty buildings had to offer. She probably wouldn't have even come down if it weren't for the statue.

She had heard hear-say about it. If she remembered correctly from what she over-heard at the gym, it had even been mentioned on the news or some newspaper...

Regardless of where it had been mentioned, it was something people knew about. Comments about how it was interesting. Nothing really special. She hadn't thought much of it until people had started speaking about it on the strange network that she somehow had access to. If these statues really did play a part in whatever was happening with her -- and with everyone else -- going to see them was undoubtedly necessary. So after work she had headed down to the area where the statue had been raised, snug in a buttoned up black overcoat and her favorite bright red scarf. It was cold out for April.

When she arrived there were people surrounding it so she hung back, deciding to look at it from afar first. It was... an interesting piece. Perhaps she couldn't appreciate whatever it was supposed to represent because of a general lack of knowledge about the arts on her part. A snake made out of pink stone...

For some reason it made her a little uncomfortable. A strange feeling.

Once most people vacated the area she approached to get a closer look, crouching down to check the base of the statue out.

She's a little surprised at his voice when he speaks because he's so close. It takes her a moment to realize that he's even speaking to her -- mostly due to the fact that there isn't anyone else within their radius. She looks up at him from her crouch and then stands, brushing the bottom of her coat off as she rises. Somehow, getting on her knees and staring at the base of a snake statue felt like a strange thing for people to see her doing.

"So you feel that way about it too?" At least it wasn't just her. There was something... wrong about it. A wrong feeling.

"I was wondering if it was just because I don't know much about art."

She takes a step to the side to take a look at the statue from another angle. Based on appearance alone it seemed like a perfectly ordinary statue. If it weren't for the strange feeling she probably would have just walked by it without a thought. No weird base, no strange glowing lights, nothing you might expect to see when you imagine a statue that sounds like it must have come out of a SciFi movie.

At the mention of his friends, she glances back at him, "Did your friends feel it too?"

She steps away from the statue and looks at him when he mentions the numbers for a moment before giving a nod. So he was another person who had access to the network? Or had heard about it somehow?

"I'm guessing that you have as well?"

"I'm Rue."

It feels strange giving him her name, but there doesn't seem to be any harm in doing so. They met by coincidence in front of a statue that concerned them both - it was innocent enough.

"You're the first person I've met from the network. At least, the first person I know that's connected for sure. Everyone's been very careful."

"Yes. We really don't know what is being monitored and what isn't. Code names would probably be safer than sharing real names."

She steps back from the statue some more and walks around the other side of it before walking over to him, "I agree. I'd like to see everyone stay safe. I've been thinking on how we can find ways to work together without endangering anyone's personal safety. It's difficult when we're really only connected by that network." She couldn't think of a scenario where at least one person wasn't putting themselves at risk. At least, not yet. She had only been thinking on it for a few short days.

"It's probably for the best if we assume it isn't safe at all."

She had been working under that assumption ever since she had connected. Even if no one else could get into the network without a number, presumably, the question of if everyone that already had access to the network were being honest about their confusion remained.

"Still... if there really is something going on," she glances at the statue once more, "... then we may really need to work together, in some way."

That gets a little huff of a laugh, "Well, as long as you're not trying anything..."

She pulls her phone out of her bag as well, "I'd rather not pass my special number around, but I'll give you my cell phone number." Who knew if they were even safe where they were standing -- for all they knew there was some kind of camera inside the statue. Her cell was nothing special. It could easily be replaced.

"Here, you can put your number in." She passes her phone to him so he can punch in his own numbers and name.

"I'll do it - it'll probably turn out clearer that way," she says as she holds out her hand for the phone, "and it's probably easier."
