[After his scheduled training, Suzaku has studying to do. While he could return home to do that, he decides his assigned reading might be better in the park. The weather's nice, and if he doesn't have to be cooped up while studying up on mythology, so much the better. He finds a bench with a good view of the rest of the park, plunks himself right there, and tugs a book out of his pack]

Alright, where was I...

[He casually thumbs through several pages before arriving at a familiar line and settles more comfortably on his seat. After some time he arrives at a familiar conclusion with a sigh]

Achilles isn't any damn hero.

[Murdering a good guy and dragging him around in the dirt isn't anything resembling heroic. Why is every "hero" an asshole?]

[After all the excitement, Riku had been hoping a quick jog through the park would settle him a bit. So with some change, his phone, and a pair of earphones, he set off for the park, turning up the music.]

Except those guys just doomed to live on cosplaying forever, eh?

[Suzaku's getting through The Iliad at a fine pace until a sudden flicker of movement in the periphery of his vision. His gaze shifts in that direction just in time for a man to snatch a woman's purse and bolt down the bike path.

The woman screams and Suzaku jumps up, darting after the purse-snatcher. Like he's going to let something like that go on right in front of him and do nothing. He might not be a cop, but he can handle this]

Those ones get sucked into different dimensions to get bullied by kuudere pink haired stuffs.

[Riku had built up a good pace, sinking into a zone where there was nothing but the feel of the ground under his sneakers and the beat of the music in his head. He'd made it halfway through the park when he became distantly aware of a commotion. He turned towards it just as a man all but bowled him over, shoving him off-balance.] Hey! What gives, asshole!?

[Then, of course, he felt something hit his back like a truck, sending him sprawling into the dirt.] Gh!

See that's just a good ending to my ears.

[Naturally it would only be courteous of Suzaku to stop and help up that person he just bowled over.

So he doesn't, and keeps chasing after the thief]

You won't get away!

[A promise he delivers on when he catches the man's arm and knocks him to the ground, jerking the purse away from him]

What the hell are you, some kind of cliche?

Clearly this cosplayer simply lives for punishment.

[No worries there because once Riku's picked himself back up, he's got a bone or two to pick with fucking asshole number 1 and 2 over there. What are they doing, filming some kind of cheesy detective scene for a school project? 'You won't get away'? Really? He stalks over, intent on getting to the bottom of this if nothing else.]

Well consider who you're referring to here.

[Suzaku has clearly watches one too many anime shows, is all. When the owner of the purse approaches, Suzaku simply drops the purse in her hands, makimg her fumble to catch it]

Hold onto it next time.

[Which is enough for thank-yous to be promptly forgotten as the woman huffs and marches off. His attention then turns back to the thief, who gets a sound kick to his side]

Go ahead, skulk off.

Hey. Wiseguys. What the hell is-- [And of course he gets interrupted by the purse being summarily handed over and the woman making her exit. He frowns at the scene. A snatcher? The man grunts at the kick, uttering curses at the other boy. The fuck. He jerks the kicker's shoulder back before the guy could get impatient enough place another kick.]

Who died and made you king? You made your point; call the cops if you want him taken in.

[Once was enough, and the guy's running off while he sees the opening. Suzaku brushes that hand off his shoulder and watches him go]

He could've had a weapon, you shouldn't have gotten involved.

[Having dealt with the situation, he sticks his hands in his pockets and turns back toward his bench, starts walking, and pauses. Suzaku backpedals a step and a half and squints at this guy]

Please surrender all your fluff and pick up your complementary hair gel and eyeliner

I didn't have much of a choice when both of you ran over me. [Riku thinks about chasing after the guy, just to let off some steam, but he looked like a petty thief, and god knew how but he was sort of living with one of those anyway. At least the situation seems under control now. The guy turns and for the first time, Riku could really take a look at him, prompting a frown. What... This idiot looks kind of familiar.]

[It takes a moment to realize curly-burly is doing the same thing. He looked vaguely Japanese. Japantown? Or Japan? Deciding it's worth a shot, he tries switching to Japanese.] Hey... you're japanese?

And consider investing in a few zippers and belts of dubious utility

[Suzaku lets comments about running over people slide right off. It's done and over with really, and he's not the sort to apologize all that often if the situation is informal.

When the guy starts speaking Japanese, he's rather sure he really does know that face, although...]

What the hell happened to your head?

[Perfectly enunciated in Japanese, of course]

[Well that way of talking sure jogs a few memories. Have a frown as he continues the conversation in Japanese.] ...Kururugi? What happened to your body?

[Excuse him while he tips his head back just enough to look imperious. Oh yes, it's him alright]

I grew up, what else?

[depolarized]

You look like a beansprout with bad hair. [A soft snort. The rudeness should've tipped him off, however many summers ago it's been.] Why are you in Locke?

And you look like something out of an anime.

[He really can't get past that hair, it seems so bizarre when he remembers how dark it was]

I've been here a while.

[depolarized]

[This is a statement. Land of free expression, oretaku. He reaches up to touch it, anyway, before remembering himself and dropping the hand.]

Like you can talk. "You won't get away"? [Small snort, but he doesn't seem to mean it badly.]

How long? I didn't think... we left after that summer. [A frown. He had wondered, sometimes.]

[He doesn't pick fights he can't win. But then, he's never lost a fight so that's easy to say.

Suzaku folds his arms, considering that second question]

I've been living overseas for almost half my life now.

From an anime. [Well he sees that ego is intact, at least.]

Been about a year now. My godfather grew up here.

[He shrugs at this, finding the details not all that important]

A year, huh. [That explains why he's never seen him around, at least.]

Are you taking politics or something? [He vaguely remembers some mention of a godfather who gave him some toys.]

[It's a word so dripping with venom for the notion that there's no need for further comment really. He abhors what his father was, and still resents having been pushed so adamantly in that direction]

I'm in the military.

[depolarized]

Good for you. [A surprise, since he'd been expecting him to follow his dad, but Riku approves. Politics always seemed like boring business. Then he looks at that lush mop of brown curls.]

Military? That's new. Getting a cape and a mask with your own color didn't work out? [And he walks off to the side of the park so they're not quite obstructing the path for any bikers and joggers.]

Didn't I already say I grew up?

[For his part, Suzaku looks mildly annoyed, but that's nothing new. He's not sure why Riku is even bothering with this small talk, and he doesn't know what to do with it either]

Still haven't explained your hair. Some freak accident, or what?

[depolarized]

Doesn't sound like you really did. [attitude problem, check. Still, he walks up to one of the ice cream carts and pauses.]

I needed a change. [A pause.] And before I forget... [And that was a swift punch to your shoulder, Suzaku.] That's for nearly popping my stitches.

[Suzaku deals with it only because of the mention of injury. It stops him mid-retaliation, in fact, looking at Riku speculatively]

Not supposed to be doing any strenuous activity with stitches, you dope.

[Which is about the gentlest word he can have for the guy. And only because having something of a friend for even a little while had been a nice thing, when he was little.

Not that it's all that important]

It wasn't strenuous until you two shoved me. [Well he really would have if he didn't have glowy green magic, anyway. But satisfied, Riku digs out a bill from his pocket and hands it to the ice cream man and points the menu cardboard stuck to the side of the cart.] Two o those.
