eins; video
[ It's a small, plump girl nervously glancing at the camera. One hand twirls her hair endlessly, while the other stiffly holds the iphone. It takes her a while to speak, but when she does, her voice is endlessly soft, accented heavily. If you recognize a southern German accent, she is basically a stereotype of it. ]
Um... Hello, someone. I am not understanding... the making of film here... [ Her hand moves from her hair to try and indicate the screen. After a few moments, the English comes to her: ] on small-internet. Netverk? I had numbers, and it put me here? Who does make this? I... Sorry, sorry. But...
[ It seems she's losing her nerve. If it was possible for her voice to go quieter, it does. ]
My English isn't so good. I only want to say hello. And, um... Ask what this means? The netverk and... Sorry. [ Hand back to twirling her hair. It's obvious she's too nervous to continue. She glances away briefly before turning her video function off. ]

[Text | Handwritten; Hindi] just threadjacking don't mind me
Are you fluent?
[Text | Handwritten; Hindi]
Enjoy your pink Devanagari script. ]
Yes, I am. I've been studying this language since I was a child, in the hopes of finding a translating job.
Is it your native language? Forgive my assumption, but it's rare that I find Americans who are multilingual.
[Text | Handwritten; Hindi]
[...that's kind of adorable]
It is. I'm from New Delhi, originally.
It's not much of an assumption. Americans don't like to go out of their way to learn anything about other places.
[Text | Handwritten; Hindi]
[ Guess who is still really upset over her conversation with Hikari? This chick, right here. ]
Though, I shouldn't be too harsh. It can be just as difficult in other countries.
[Text | Handwritten; Hindi]
If they don't see it on TV, it doesn't exist to them.
Ah, but it's true that America isn't the only place with people like that.
How long have you been here?
[Text | Handwritten; Hindi]
How long have you been here? Why did you choose Locke? I came here for the University.
[Text | Handwritten; Hindi]
About 18 years now. I came as a teenager with my parents. The Army chose Locke for me, but I liked it enough to stay.
What are you studying? [he assumes something to do with linguistics, since she said she wanted to be a translator, but he'd rather ask than put the assumption out there and be wrong]
[Text | Handwritten; Hindi]
English. I haven't made a very good start of it, though. The UN's paying for me to stay here for a year or two, so hopefully I'll start to pick it up sometime soon.
Are you still in school? Or are you out and about, being useful to society?
[ plot twist: despite milking the German education system for all its worth, Julia feels a little shitty for being a leech and not actually having a legitimate career. whooooops ]
[Text | Handwritten; Hindi]
[he gave her math that makes him at least 30, so it strikes him as odd that she'd ask if he's still in school instead of just asking what he does]
[cultural disconnect how you doin]
Being useful. I work at the university's hospital.
[wait]
[delayed reaction, the bit about the UN finally hits him]
You have a scholarship from the UN?
[Text | Handwritten; Hindi]
Also, yes about the scholarship! Although, I don't think it's because of anything I've done in particular. Sometimes, when you apply for these scholarships, they seem completely random. I feel sorry for those more qualified than I am-- I took their spot! But I like it here, so I don't feel too guilty. :)
[Text | Handwritten; Hindi]
[he sees you minimizing there julia!]
[he knows what it looks like because he does it all the time.]
You know six languages and are learning two others. I think that's something in particular.
And you must be very wise, too, because one of them is Hindi. [best choice]
[Text | Handwritten; Hindi]
Besides, being a nurse is no small feat. One of my older brothers dated a nurse for a while, but she was always working-- the poor girl had no free time outside of her job. You must be very determined to help people to have a job like that.
[ enjoy your minimizing with a pinch of compliments to take the conversation focus off herself!!! this is some skillful conversationing going on all up in here, yo. ]
[Text | Handwritten; Hindi]
Ah, no, it's wiser to have chosen it than to not have had a choice. And to be as good at it as you are with all those other languages in your head? I can barely manage two! Your skill is very impressive.
That's true, we are very dedicated people with no social lives. It doesn't seem like so much when you've done it for years, though.
[Text | Handwritten; Hindi]
You give up your social life, but in return you save lives. I think that's incredibly noble. I'm certain there are many people out there who are grateful to you and your work.
[Text | Handwritten; Hindi]
I wish everyone had so much respect for what we do.
What is your name?
[acknowledge & change topic, the perfect strategy for giving up]
[Text | Handwritten; Hindi]
[Text | Handwritten; Hindi]
Ravindra Savarna.

I am very glad to have met you, Julia.
