[ After spending a good week and a half waffling over whether he really wants to draw attention to himself (he's never been especially great at talking to larger groups), Alexi finally enters his number into his cell phone and starts typing.

His punctuation isn't the best and he's not really bothering to capitalize. In fact, it probably looks like it's coming from someone who's just typing before he even finishes the thought, as if he's getting increasingly nervous. ]

so i'm not really expecting much from this. i mean i'm pretty sure someone screwed up. there's no way i'm one of those 'heroes' everyone keeps talking about. sure it'd be kind of cool but i'm just not that special. really. so i figure this is a fluke, right.

[ There is a pause of about a minute or so before the second part of the message appears, as Alexi debates how to explain things without sounding like a total idiot. ]

it's just when i asked mom and dad about what i remembered -- you know those pulse things. they didn't remember. that was weird. i mean that girl didn't seem like a stranger and i can't find any pictures of her. so it's kind of freaking me out you know. i guess i'm just hoping that if this is really happening someone can tell me what i'm supposed to do next. cause i've got no idea. and talking to someone has to be better than confusing the heck out of myself.

[ Hopefully, that didn't sound as stupid as it did in his head. ]

If it reassures you at all, you aren't obligated to do the heroics. Simply that the abilities we may receive make it far easier.

Would you like a link to the FAQ for new Numbered Members? Though it may need updating now, some things are still relevant and may help explain some of the news stories.

[ Truth be told, Alexi isn't sure whether Dani's statement about flexible obligation reassures him or not. After all, he's always found it easier to have established goals and directions as he's moved through life. That's what his parents say anyway. He'd much rather know what is expected of him than what's not.

But it probably won't help to be too pushy with someone he's just met. ]

The Network has been around for about a year. People have had plenty of time to get things together.

Here is the FAQ. I was told very explicitly to not watch the video linked. From how people acted, I can only assume it is what it says it is. [And yet she watched it anyway, but like hell she's telling anyone that.]

I also recently did a survey on echoes and may be able to explain a few things and theories about them if you wish.

wait we can lose the stuff we get back if we leave the city? how are we supposed to help people outside of it

Unfortunately, we can't. We can't even be sure that there aren't more threats outside of the city and we just can't become aware of them.

However, it is probably safe to assume where the lights appear is where the focus of such concerns and Numbered people appear there. It's not in the FAQ, but there are people in Las Vegas right now.

I think that maybe there has been a change to how much is lost when we leave? At least people made it to Las Vegas, so they must remember enough.

This was the version I got and it was shortly before the giant snake attack and several things changed then.

Didn't you see the news report about the light in Las Vegas? It's the same as the one that appeared here last year.

It would help. It's good to be aware of anything strange going on, but at least any big events will be over the news and the Network.

Well, as the FAQ said, there's three kinds. Memory, item, and ability. I haven't gotten item, but it's like an item will just appear. Presumably nearby. Like those giant robots would be some such items.

Memories do vary. Some can be clear, like any other memory. What you have is probably like that if it was clear enough for you to mistake as your own. Sometimes you can get memories and they're only the emotion or an image.

Abilities can be a bit more tricky. I'm not sure what prompted it, but one ability echo I remembered how to use what I got back. All the rest, I haven't. All I know is I have an echo, but it's neither memory nor item, so it's an ability and I have to figure out what it is. Which is not easy, and there's no set way to figure it out without context of what it might be.

Now for what prompts an echo, there's two what I would call classifications.

One is an echo will be prompted by an incident from the aliens or something related to them. For example, being near Wise Snake, seeing the light, watching the alien broadcast, all of those prompted echos in people. It's the universal way that everyone has gotten at least one echo after some time here.

The second way is broader and is more akin to Deja Vu. This can literally be anything. It can be an event, a picture, an item, a phrase, whatever, but for some reason it's familiar to something present in your other life. For example, someone saw a hat and they echoed something. I saw someone with the same face as a person I knew in the other life and I echoed back a memory of that person.

And it's a theory that the incident for Deja Vu has to be, more or less, unique. Something to make it special. If you get coffee everyday, and nothing different happens, you won't get an echo of your other life getting coffee. Mundane things can prompt one, but it must be a new mundane thing to you. It's why people can hear the name of someone they used to know in their old life all their life, and echo back nothing about that person, because the name is not new.

[ Alexi never has been great with information dump so there's probably a considerable delay as he tries to take that all in and sort it into some semblance of sense in his head. He'd been hoping that getting stuff back was a lot less complicated than this, but Danielle's explanation is sure putting a damper on that whole idea, especially when it came to getting back abilities or just getting back an emotion felt during a memory. Not that he has any ideas what abilities another him might have. ]

so are the abilities ever like enhanced versions of things you already have. and how do you know when you trigger an echo thing.

It could be possible. I know some people have received echoes that enhance normal physical abilities, strength, agility, things like that. So it stands to reason that some others things could be enhanced as long as it was something you had before.

There's a strange, hollowed out feeling, and then there's a sound like a heart beat.

[ Yes, that description does evoke the memory of his first echo. That was one of the reasons why he had approached his parents about the memory, although he had never told them about the feeling. That was something unique to him, he'd been pretty sure at the time. ]

After the feeling, yes. At least it's worked that way for me so far and no one said anything contrary to it.

At least I think that's how it's been. I believe I've been echo'ing back abilities, but I've yet to really figure out how they work.

It's an alias. And I choose to use one since I'm approaching the Network more like the internet as I get to know more people here.

i guess i could do that but i figure my first name isn't really going to help people track me down.

There's certainly nothing wrong with that. To be fair, I just happen to have a semi-public image. It would be easier to pinpoint who I was.

No. Semi-public. It means I'm not someone most people would recognize on the street, but it wouldn't be hard for others to find out a lot about me if they could Google my name. Like a lower politician level.
