there is nothing remotely 'ok' about this situation in the least! whether or not you have lived up to whatever expectations they may have had for you, to turn you out of your home when you are vulnerable is completely unacceptable!!

please forgive me if this sounds impolite, but such reasoning is about as sound as assuming a murder will occur in a home simply because a serial killer lived in it several decades ago.

unless you receive an entire gang in a pulse, this part of your past is not something which should make them so nervous.

i highly doubt that there is any 'putting out' involved if they are offering the space to begin with. i will not worry only if you promise not to end up living in the transient shelters or the back of a car!

i am friends with them already as well, so i had assumed that i would be the one making the request. such things are usually not burdensome, although i am certain they will inform me if it is not a good idea.
